What romance path did you pick? Friendship or Rivalry?

I'm currently playing a Chaotic Good Blood Mage Hawke, so I will therefore support Merrill wholeheartedly in her evil demonic ways and do the friendship path.

I've done friendmance, and found it sweet and enjoyable, but pretty tame compared to the rivalmance. I usually romance her on grumpy warrior Hawke's, so the whole "you got a demon mirror that kills people" thing doesn't sit well with them. They don't even object to her blood magic much since she views it as a useful tool she had no choice but to take up, and she's not all psycho killer like 99% of the other blood mages in the game.  It's more about protecting her from the mirror, and her obsession. Plus the whole 'attracted to you despite what my head tells me' thing appeals to me with her. I imagine the arguments lead to some pretty energetic make up sexytimes.

I can imagine a blood mage wouldn't be bothered by Merrill's plans, so a friendmance seems like it will fit well with that concept. Have fun!

Tried rivalry once, but as I see no problem with Merrill's bloodmagic, I usually romance her via friendship. And "rivalmance" needs to much plannig, as apart from objecting to bloodmagic (her quests and the tomes in Act 2), gaining rivalry with her means being a jerk or against mages (or elves) in general. Putting her out of the party before every mage related quest to avoid the dreaded neutrality just bothers me.

Friendship all the way.

I find that Merrill's friendship path has Hawke show a lot more respect for Merrill than the rivalry path. He acknowledges the mirror and the demon as dangerous, but he also acknowledges that these are Merrill's risks to take and she's intelligent and experienced enough to decide for herself whether or not to pursue them. Rivalry has him treating her like a child who doesn't know what's good for her.

Yeah I agree. Rivalry just seems like "BAD MERRILL! I TOLD YOU NOT TO BARGAIN WITH DEMONS! GO SIT IN THE NAUGHTY CORNER AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!"

Friendship.

I mean it's the best way for the relationship to work.

The best thing about the Rivalry romance is getting yelled at and tossed out of her home. That hit home with me.=]

Friendship. To be honest, I think Rivalmancing Merrill is little better than emotional abuse.

LOL Guess I'm the only one who actually likes Rivaled Merrill.  Honestly, people, she's not a china doll that will shatter if you tell her 'no'.

While I like Friended Merrill as well, I find Rivaled Merrill more interesting.  She seems much stronger, less fragile, less needy and more determined and capable.  Her Rivaled relationship with Hawke is challenging and brings out strengths in her that Friendship doesn't.  Some relationships I prefer rivaled in the game.  They seem more realistic to me.  I don't always agree with everything my loved ones tell me (and frequently we have heated debates over it, but still walk away friends/loved ones).

Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean you're abusing them.  Or do you only agree with everything your loved ones tell you, and never challenge anything?

I don't know, I honestly perfer friendship romances that are all sweet and cuddly. That's why I'm having my only Templar supporting Hawke going gay for Fenris (because friendmance).

With my first Hawke, who was a female Rogue, I was considering the Rivalmance with Fenris because she was a mage sympathizer, but Fenris was being too much of a b!tch so she settled for the more fun and loving Isabela.

I prefer the Friendmance. I don't disagree with Merrill's goals and I believe she can use blood magic responsibly, so why would I Rival her? As far as I'm concerned, Marethari's death was her own fault.

You have a point. Merrill had accepted she was risking death, and that a demon might take her over. Merrill isn't a child, she's an adult, she is allowed to make informed decisions. I'm pretty sure she tells Hawke if she turns into an abomination, that Hawke should kill her immediately.

Although I can understand Marethari's actions, even if I disagree with them. Merrill was probably like the daughter she never had, so it is understandable she would sacrifice herself to save her. But she should have respected Merrill's wishes.

Nah, you're not the only one, it's my favorite way to romance Merrill. I never felt like I was being mean, sure there's a bit of yelling but, as I RP, Hawke is only trying to look out for her best interest and help guide her to making better choices because they care so much about her.

I've only romanced her once as a rival, but I've enjoyed the platonic relationship many, many times both as a friend and as a rival. I like playing it through in friendship mode because I enjoy the feeling that she really trusts and cares for Hawke. I like playing it through in rivalry mode because I appreciate how strong and independent it makes her. I too got the feeling that rival Hawke was trying to help her, not hurt her, but I loved how she dug in her heels and found strength in herself.

and manipulation of Merrill.

I have never once Rivalmanced her, but I've seen the videos of it with Rivaled Merrill interactions. It is the equivalent of emotional abuse and manipulation in my eyes.

I've done both. I think the rivalmance is about trying to keep Merrill from playing with things she may not understand. But I don't like it personally. Hawke is trying to protect Merrill...but Hawke hasn't done any research on eluvians or knows anything about elven culture outside of what he's told.

I very much prefer the friendship romance as Hawke treats Merrill with respect, they have an open understanding between each other, and Merrill is just so dang adorable. Especially when she's being sarcastic. And she's sarcastic quite a lot, actually.
