They have already made many of the companions in both games optional.

In DA:O Sten, Zevran, and Wynne were all optional.

In DAO Alistair was the only absolutely essential character.  I believe you can even kick Morrigan to the curb.

As long as they are well written and developed (with multiple personal quests like DA2), then I'd be fine with even a dozen companions.


I'd want to bump up the party size restriction though, or remove it altogether.

Carver and Bethany have diffrent lines,each one has a uniuqe fate/ their own Friendship/rival path, all their uniuqe banter, their own look and upgrades. That takes time, so while yes you only get one of them in one pt, they are still two seperate companions and characters, writing and gameplay wise.

No, since you can have either one OR the other, they only count as one!

And since you can either HAVE (Fenris or Isabela) or NOT HAVE (Fenris or Isabela), they only count as half a companion each.

This is pretty simple stuff, come on guise.

Thats true but one of them dies at the beginning of the game so you never really experience that unless to you replay as another class

That just means that there's only 8 companions available in a single playthrough. You can still count them as 9 companions in the game.

I can see what you meant Maria, but just to be clear: Beth and Car count as two companions, Anders and Justice as one. Anders and Justice (quoting Anders) "...are as one." Anders' body and mind are melded with the spirit of Justice. You can't have one without the other, but you can have Bethany without Carver, and visa versa.

I think it’s up to the writers and of course everyone working on the game to decide how many companions they should breathe life into. And their professionals…so I don’t think they would they would bite off more than they could chew. If they thought the end results would be poor (at least not purposely). I enjoyed all the characters, whether I wanted to punch them in the face at times (Carver), or just wanted to give them a hug. I can’t wait to see what Bioware has in store for us in the future.

I was actually going to use this as an example in my previous post, but I had decided against it.

Personally, I consider Alistair a full-fledged character (considering he's present for 90% of the game no matter what you do) and Loghain a full character as well (although I can see how one might consider him a "secret character" or a duplicate/replacement for Alistair for people that recruit him).

When it comes to Bethany and Carver, I consider them very separate characters despite only getting one per playthrough. They really only have Act 1 and endgame content aside from two potential cameos, but they are different enough to consider two characters rather than two versions of the same character. My opinion is also sort of reinforced by the fact that both major DLC packs treated them as separate characters.
