I think nine would be a good number. Three of each class.

I agree. Or maybe two of each class one like one archer one duel weilder. I'm kinda hoping we get only a few companions and a ton of temerary compsnions like what ME3 was supposed to have

Up to 10 companions will join your party this time out, with battle groups including as many as 4 support characters, doubling the usual BioWare party size.

Well, then I would say don't trust everything you read in that source. It's incorrect.

Either way, if we thought the cost of an individual companion made having X number of companions too expensive then we would have less companions. If we thought that having more visual customization of companions was a feature worth spending some money on, and which would get us some bang for our dollars, then we would spend it.

So, since the leaked survey's story summary was in fact NOT incorrect, we know that what gaider said here is not entirely true.

I'm betting they have 5 or less non-temporary companions. Any takers?

Why is it too much? So long as they have enough development time to make them all interesting, ten seems fine.

You mean 'too many.' It's an enumerated quantity.

I think ten is doable.

Just as a recap of previous Bioware efforts:

1) KotOR had nine companions, though T3 and (possibly) Zaalbar could be looked on as being limited.

2) Jade Empire had 8 full-fledged companions, not counting secret/temporary.

3) Mass Effect had six companions, possibly Bioware's smallest cast.

4) Mass Effect 2 had 10 full-fledged companions, not counting Zaeed.

5) Dragon Age: Origins had 8 full-fledged companions, not counting Dog or Loghain.

6) DA2 had 7 full-fledged companions, not counting the brother/sister.

In terms of character content, none of these games felt lacking, except for maybe ME1 which had the smallest cast. 10 companions doesn't take into account how many of these are temporary/limited in the style of DA:O's Dog or T3-M4. There might well be a few of these.

Very simple trade off. More companions = less developed companions, less party banter between certain companions, probably less well developed companion personal quests.

Baldurs Gate had what 25 companions?

I think 8 seems like a good number to me that covers variety of classes and few enough that they can devote real time to each of them.

DAO had 9 and so did DA2. I don't see how adding 1 more will just kill it.

I don't think adding one will kill it, but at the same time I do have my concerns, for in Dragon Age: Origins they had nine unique characters, but they all shared the same animations and body as the player character so any armor the player could find would be usable on the party members.  The problem people had with the companions in Dragon Age 2 was the lack of customization for their look never changed, but kept the uniqueness of personality because they didn't have to design multiple armor sets.  So with having a lot of party members something will need to be reduced and one concern I have is to the party members the multiple looks people seem attached too, there might be sacrifice of personality of the party members.

i would rather they drop this "armor looks different on any one companion" - it is silly IMHO (and i admit that i would have probably killed Allistair if he "hammered" a grey warden symbol into the armor i gave him or put a sticker on the shield <_<

greetings LAX
ps: 10 companions is not too much...i would love to have say 3 warriors, 3 rogues and 3 mages and one based on the player character or something along those lines :) (it makes it possible to have diverse companions and it makes it more likely i will find "my party" among them (in DA:O i didn't like a some of the companions and the alternative was not all that good sometimes either...like tank (real one, not an off-tank) you only had Shale and Alistair, for healer you head Wynne (which i don't like that much anymore, even less after reading Asunder!) and possibly yourself (which does not fit, i am no healer - i kill things, i don't fix them) or Morrigan (which also does not much fit her personality...and then one of her specialization slots is already filled with that - IMHO - useless shape-shifting (hell i would like to have that in RL, but ingame it was just not all that usefull!)) for rogues you only had Zef and Leliana (the later is too much a chantry-"****" for me)...so my party was normally (almost always - which makes replaying a tad boring ^^): Alistair (best Tank and i do like him), Morrigan (Healer/Bloodmage normally - sometimes i did cheat to giver her Arcane-Warrior, too and "explained" it by her mother having given her blood magic), Zev as my rogue (to open boxes ^^) and myself as a damager mage :)
=> while i liked Sten, Oghren and Shale, i never really had use for them (that's why i disliked the "deep-roads" part where you have to take Oghren...:?

Who says we're going to have 10 companions?

The BIG question is are we gonna have companions all the way through or are we going to have to do solo missions a la shepard

While less companions may mean more depth, it also becomes more of a problem if you don't like the character.

Baldur's gate also had limitations to it becasue of the time it was created.

If BioWare was able to pull off 25 companions, it would be dependent on playthrough only, if that makes any sense. You only get specific companions based upon specific conditions, like Loghain was.

Agreed. I'd be willing to wait longer so more characters can have depth.

less companions doesnt equal more deep companions, both ME1 and ME3 felt really lack-luster in their companion department them having nearly nothing to say and ME3 being the worst offender with its full-on autodialogue
