Pets are over rated. There isn't any character development or growth. You have a pet with those, well then maybe. But otherwise, save time and money and make something else in the game, like a better base camp.

It doesn't. This is the same as saying, "You dropped that RPG from 20 classes to 18, Stop making this a shooter!"
It's hyperboly but you get the point. Like Skyrim took away classes and people said that it "wasn't an RPG," when in fact it's more of a Role Playing Game now then Oblivian was because you play a role and that's what levels that role up.

I was kinda thinking like Mr Barkspawn and Ser Pounce A Lot type pets. Not like...pets that need upkeep. Good god, no.
I always just wooed Kelly into taking care of my fish. I was grateful when they had the self-feeder thing in ME3.
