It really isn't surprising this game has such a low player retention. The way the store and low payout on lower difficulties would easily drive a lot of casual players away, as well as people not willing to put up with the grind. It is a shame, but I can't see BioWare/EA changing their ways, besides its far to late to do anything to get those players back.

Where's the proof that 11% is "low player retention?" It may very well be, but for all we know, the title of the thread could just as easily have been "Wow, playerbase is STILL at 11%!"

It seems pretty good to me that that many people are still playing after 7 months, but we need something to compare it to to know whether that's a good or bad retention rate.

The numbers are pretty good considering most thought it would last a few weeks before dying

For a first attempt at a multiplayer mode in a series whose fanbase is decidedly focused on single-player, that's really not bad. Of course the heaps of free DLC helped.

Finally we have a glimpse of the player base size thanks to the new N7-HQ statistics. It says on my overview page, that my N7 rating is #6746 globally, and that is top 2%. From this it is easy to estimate, that the total playerbase in the statistics is ~50 x 6746 = 337000.

This is already invalid. that 337k is all players of all time who ever played one match. I don't think they even have to play a match to register themselves in the system at n7 rank of 1.  It doesn't mean they were an actual active player at that point.

It is still unknowable how many active MP players there were at launch and on. Saying that it is 11% is misleading.

Its like saying 1.2 percent of humans are still alive today. Well yes because billions have died in the years beforehand.

Basically you can't say that all 337k were all playing at once at one time, and it would be ludicrous to think so.

You know, not everyone who plays has challenge points yet, right?

The master Xbox race is carrying you pc and psp noobs.

So much wrong with that statement.  PC has the highest percentage of active players, though granted it's a smaller number to count towards weekend operations... and PSP?  lol?

More OT... I wonder how this would compare to other primarily SP games with multiplayer features, like Gears of War or Uncharted.  I did a cursory google, but failed to find anything as easy to draw conclusions with.

Disagree with comparing ME MP to Gears of War...Gears of War has ALWAYS been a MP game first with the SP tacked on as an extra.

Conversely, something like Bioshock, which is first and foremost a SP game that late ron got a MP is a better comparison...

My bad, and thanks.  I've little experience with GoW so I was ill-informed.   Outside-looking-in it seemed to be SP focused to me.

Kinda reminds me of the discussion about "how many people finished ME3" in the general forum...

One person posted something along the lines of how nad/sad/pathetic it was for Bioware that only 42% of people finished the game....Of course, what the original poster didn't take into account was that the industry average is M UCH, MUCH lower. closer to Red Dead Redemption 10% than ME3's 43%....

Hell, Portal's 67% completion rate is considered INCREDIBLY rare and not something you'll see repeated by any game in the same year...

Nice job! I've been curious of the same thing but have been too lazy to rub brain cells together.

I wonder why PC has the highest retention rate. ~16% compared to ~10% of PS3/XBOX.  Mouse/keyboard preference?  No aim-assist? :P

EDIT:  That said, across platforms, that seems like a significant amount of active players for a multiplayer mode of a game/series with primary emphasis on single-player.

PC players tend to purchase games and stick with them, while console gamers frequently move to other titles at a higher rate.

It has been pointed out that the ORIGINAL numbers include EVERYONE who ever even turned the game on to play even one match.

I have a few friends on my list on XBOX with NV under 10! That means they played 1 match and never picked up the MP again.

The "loyal" fan base is probably much larger than the numbers in the OP indicate.

Heavy Rain had some ridiculous 70%+ completion rate, which is probably the highest anyone has seen for any game.

Well, at the very least, PC players are less likely to move to the next generic CoD iteration. {smilie}

Actually it goes further than that... It includes everyone who registered the game, even if they never played a multiplayer match at all... That's what the N7 0 at the bottom are and theres a lot of them (at least on the PC side, don't know about the rest)...

Yes this is exactly what I'm trying to say. Stating that we are 11% of people who ever turned the game on is a much different statement than what OP is saying.

do your calculations take account for the fact that many players are at the same rank values?

The same rank is not applied more than once I have the same rank as probly 2000 other people and the placement like #67,000 increases by one for the next guy with the same n7.

Regardless though OPs numbers are misleading.

1.2 percent of humans are still alive today even though we have more population than ever. But more have died in the past than we have right now. (statistic pulled out of my @** )

I actually think 11% is pretty darn good. That being said. The next two months will be the real test to see how it stacks up against these new games. I'd honestly say we'd lose probably 1% to Halo 4 alone.

Wrong, just because it had multiplayer since the first installment doesn't mean it was always MP first. Most people I know played the 1st Gears for SP. And then 2nd and 3rd for MP because of the introduction of horde mode and other MP games other than warzone.

I'd compare it to Halo. Because the first Halo only had splitscreen/LAN MP. Then look at Halo 3 and Reach. They became incredibly all about the MP.

The game has been out for 7 months. Of course it is going to lose a lot of it's player base. In fact, I would say ME3 is doing above average as far as keeping players.

Subtract off all the zero N7 ratings or anyone less than 20 N7 and I think you'd find a whole different story though. I doubt the player base was ever as large as all that.
