has anybody tried Blood control + VWB. It is like a seek and destroy homing missile.

How do you employ stealing? Every character in every town? On monsters?

Hey, Jack. About your issue with the Dwarves. Have you considered that it's just their Racial Resist being buggy and triggering more often than truly random chance would normally allow? After all, Dwarves do have a natural +10 Spell Resist.

yes, you are probably correct. Either that or the Nightmare 2.4 mod that i've been using for quite a while now increases spell resistance checks.

I wouldn't know, actually. I just thought I'd toss it out there. I may actually be completely off-base. It just seems like a far easier idea to accept than the 'Crushing Prison Suxxors' one, because I really like Crushing Prison.

Why did you pick stealing as a skill to max as a mage? How did you employ it? I assume your cunning was very low signfiicantly undermining both the stealing and coercion skills...
I picked it for additional income in early game. In late game it was pretty useless as I had enough gold to buy top gear from vendors, huge packs of ingridients and still had like 250 gold in my pocket.
My cunning was boosted early by additional points in Fade part of Magi Tower, so it worked fine. I also got some +cunning items.
I didn't know about Crime Wave quest chain before this solo play, as I never had a rogue companion and my own char didn't have Stealing learnt. So once I got to Denerim to get all available side-quests, it was a nice surprise. I decided to max Stealing to be able to complete the quest. As lockpicking is not a skill but a rogue talent, I had to use Leliana to unlock the doors to break into the houses I got marks for.
Concerning Coercon, I maxed it to side with Werewolves and convince Lady of the Forrest to assault the Elven village. Through the entire game I didn't go for "Persuade" option in dialogues if "Attack" was available.

Thanks Egorych, I had no idea that this quest existed either until your post.

I just fought Javia as a solo blood mage on nightmare. I opened up with an inferno before the fight started. I immediately cast glyph of repulsion followed by blood wound. I double hexed javia and cast VWB on her. I then shot off a fireball and a winters grasp. Javia and all but 2 of her minions expired before my glyph of repulsion dispelled (20 seconds.). She did not even leave her enclosure which is something I have never seen her do in any play through The last two minions were pretty much dead anyway so I closed with a cone of cold and walking bomb.

To get ALL available side-quests from Slim Couldry in Denerim Stealing not enough. Stealing and Stealth is.
To get as much as gold possible early, without resorting to unconventional approaches, max Coercion is the way in my experience, Stealing is "inferior" imo. But again, the game hardly requires "optimal" builds/approaches to be beaten.

Very nice post. I am trying this solo mage and really enjoying it. I always criticised the NWN series saying I wanted a full party based game but I am certainly liking this solo run through.
I learned a lot from your spells choices. One thing I don't like is that the game, and many like it, don't allow you to respec spells/talents at will (I have now downloaded a mod for this). So it becomes very difficult on your own to have a full knowledge of all the spells/talents. You need to read and study forums or save the game at different points and replay parts of the game making different spells choices.
thanks for posting.

Cool. I was thinking about trying this myself. LOL, 'Ownage" good name.
Which Staff did you use, Winter's Breath? Did you buy Andruil's Blessing or the Ring in denerim for protection or anything similar? I know there is some really good gear for non AW mages.

heya thanks for your post!! Just started soloing as a mage as well, I'm still debating whether or not to go arcane warrior or just stick to cloth and pwn my way through. Trying with the fire line instead of the cold

I actually tried a solo mage run at some point but lost interest. I stopped before I reached Haven so I'm not sure how well I would've fared against the High Dragon. There is one very simple tier 1 spell that can help you counter all those dangerous 1-hit kill spells enemies you mentioned in early game: Spell Shield. It worked wonders for my game, and the Anti-Magic line is actually quite dependable when properly used. Anti-Magic Ward can be used with Force Field to keep your mage inside your AoEs, as well as everything else chasing him/her.
Bodahn restocks his store once after you meet him the first time, so you can get one extra spell tome off of him. The demon in the fade can also be convinced to leave and give you a spell tome. Finally, I also used traps. Was planning on using bombs, not sure how that would've worked.

some encounters are reaaaally killing me as a cloth mage. The 4 spiders in Return to Ostagar (before you walk out of the caves) keep throwing webs at me, and overwhelm, and they have a pretty nasty dot despite the nature resist balms I get. I went there to get the Corrupted Staff in the Mage chest, but ouch. Me no like spideys...
Will get back to it later.
