The TES Modding scene is IMHO what is keeping TES alive. They are not only patching horridly bugged games for free, they also make them interesting by coming up with Mods like "White Wolf Of Lokken Mountain" and "Julan the Ashlander Companion." (Whose companion features make every Skyrim companion look PATHETIC)
You and I must be of the same mind. Seriously. Those were incredible mods.

And what I loved about those is that if you were committed to Julan and married a certain hunky Nord, Julan would TOTALLY call you out on that. OR, if you were already married to said Nord, you can tell Julan that you will not cheat on your hubbyleave your hubby for him. It's small details like that that I REALLY love.

If anything that is what I want BioWare to "borrow back" from Bethesda is adding mods back, for that is why I played both Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age: Origins is the way I could change the game, or in the case of Bethesda games, fix them so they become playable.

OH YES.
Modding tools. Bethseda is bloody smart to release full toolkits with every single TES game of theirs.

I just wonder if that is just because they haven't really updated their engine since Morrowwind and its one of my concerns going into the online version of The Elder Scrolls is that mod tools might not be present. I find a toolkit is generally one of the reasons why a game no matter how bad the reviews are I will buy because I get to change the issues in the game to what I want.

The next thing I'm waiting for is for people to bash open world games on account of Skyrim being oriented around action/twitch gameplay and how that'll never work for Dragon Age.

I don't think that's going to happen in one game, but I don't even want Bioware looking in the direction of Skyrim. I don't care to have a lot of crap dropped on me for the purpose of making me forget that the main quest is really weak. Morrowind was the last Bethesda game to have a strong main story that had a thread through almost everything you did and everywhere you went.marshalleck wrote...
I think you guys are getting a bit ahead of yourselves if you are expecting a completely freeform experience like Skyrim. It will probably be more like a single player version of SWTOR.
These are two different companies that do different things well. Bioware's strength is plot and branching quests. Bioware should stick to what they're good at.

No. I'm talking about how awesome certain Morrowind Mods (still) are. Skyrim's got nothing on Morrowind IMHO.

I'm not convinced this is anything but an old meme mindlessly repeated. The last good Bioware game was Dragon Age Origins. They've been in a severe decline since then.

That didn't work either for me. Characterization is still a weakness, especially of the protagonist, but even of the companions. And I admit, I want full romance options still.CrustyBot wrote...
It's weird how people take the weaknesses of Skyrim re: characters and writing and project it as inherent weaknesses of open world games when Fallout: New Vegas is standing right next to it.

Yeah. And BUILD on their strengths. Developing them further. I.E. expanding the Friendship/Rivalry & Personality features. As in the improvements Obsidian came up with in KOTOR 2. (Yeah, rushed release too but MAKER, I loved it!)
Bethseda TRIED doing what Bioware's good at and failed. (Companions. Romances.) So Bioware should NOT waste time and money to emulate Bethseda's strengths but focus on polishing their own strengths.

Characterization of the protagonist is a focus of the DLCs.
Are you suggesting that characterization of the companions is weak because there's no romance?
Okay, guess I'm done posting in this thread.

You may think so. I myself prefer DAII and ME3 was the best of the series IMHO. No Bioware game gripped me nearly as much as ME3 did. And DAO certainly did not.

Well, I played Oblivion and hated it. I finished everything I could finish except the Fighter's Guild because of a bug. I kept thinking it would get better but it didn't. Then I played Fallout 3 and loved it. Kept telling myself that Bethesda learned from their mistakes with Oblivion. Then I waited for my friend's reactions to Skyrim and none of them liked it. These are people who have similar tastes in games as I do, so I didn't bother with Skyrim.CrustyBot wrote...

For Bethesda's signature title I'm really surprised at how strong Fallout was and how weak the TES series has become.

I don't want to buy DLC to get the option to flesh out my protagonist. I want that in the main game.
And I don't think she suggested that at all. Merely that that is a feature she enjoys.

I admit that it's a fun gimmick.
Would I rather see those resources being used in the SP campaign and later the SP DLC? You betcha!

I just think that people's notions of what an open world game constitutes is incredibly flawed, as if there's a dichotomy between "writing" and "world".

The biggest problem with DA2 was the incredibly short development cycle. I mean, really. You can't create a decent sequel in a year. Even with all of its problems, DA2 is still a better game than Oblivion.marshalleck wrote...

Yes, it does. And it's more than a gimmick; it has kept that game afloat. Why do you think they can release so much free MP DLC? People are throwing money at them for the item packs.Persephone wrote...
