What is that????

Alien????

It's art from one of the earlier development trailers of DA2

People have been confusing it with DA3 art for some reason.

No, this obviously a corporate conspiracy, look how he avoids the simple questions! He can't tell us a date or time, just pure fallacy and lies! This 'freedom' is EA's way to create a satirical stance on their plans for every growing Chain which ties itself around the industry every day. This is a turn for the worse, I tell you. DA6 will be Skyrim with JRPG mechanics using the awesome button as the harbinger of our destruction.

Thank goodness...

why Elf suddenly becomes an alien?

They should be human-like and BEAUTIFUL

So no, DA3 Elf should be more human-like

If it's going to be open world, you can bet that it will be laggy/buggy on consoles especially on PS3. Just look at Fallout 3, FNV, and Skyrim, those are 3 of the widest open world games and all they do is crash/freeze/lag/and bug out. I don't have to worry about this though because I'm getting DA3 for PC :)

From Wikipedia:
An open world is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives.
The term "free roam" is also used, as is "sandbox" and "free-roaming". "Open world" and "free-roaming" suggest the absence of artificial barriers, in contrast to the invisible walls and loading screens that are common in linear level designs. The term "sandbox" is often used incorrectly. Open world doesn't necessarily mean sandbox. A true "sandbox" is where the player has tools to modify the world themselves and create how they play.

Generally open world games still enforce some restrictions in the game environment, either due to absolute technical limitations or in-game limitations (such as locked areas) imposed by a game's linearity.

An open world is a level or game designed as a nonlinear, vast open area with many ways to reach an objective. Some games are designed with both traditional and open world levels. An open world facilitates greater exploration than a series of smaller levels, or a level with more linear challenges. Reviewers have judged the quality of an open world based on whether there are interesting ways for the player to interact with the broader level when they ignore their main objective. Some games actually use real settings to model an open world, such as New York City.

A major design challenge is to balance the freedom of an open world with the structure of a dramatic storyline. Since players may perform actions that the game designer did not expect, the game's writers must find creative ways to impose a storyline on the player without interfering with their freedom. As such, games with open worlds will sometimes break the game's story into a series of missions, or have a much simpler storyline altogether. Other games instead offer side-missions to the player that do not disrupt the main storyline. Most open world games make the character a blank slate that players can project their own thoughts onto, although several games such as Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole offer more character development and dialog. Writing in 2005, David Braben described the narrative structure of current videogames as "little different to the stories of those Harold Lloyd films of the 1920s", and considered genuinely open-ended stories to be the "Holy Grail we are looking for in fifth generation gaming".

Games with open worlds typically give players infinite lives or continues, although games like Blaster Master force the player to start from the beginning should they die too many times. There is also a risk that players may get lost as they explore an open world; thus designers sometimes try to break the open world into manageable sections.

Scientists have been defining beauty for a few decades now. It's not as existential as they like to pretend it is.

Anyway, it was the specific mention of Ray Muyzka saying that the team was looking at Skyrim that got me going. If I wanted Skyrim or a game like Skyrim then I would play Skyrim. There aren't many games or developers that make the kind of money Skyrim or Bethesda makes, so trying to shift to that seems like an exercise in failure.

And as for shiny graphics....I think this is prettier than Skyrim. And its story was better too. And you could wander.

I will reserve my judgement until BioWare's people are allowed to be more forthcoming with information. Does that make me a bad BioWare fan? Posted Image

The BioWare devs said that they were looking closely at Skyrim, not that it would look like it.

I agree that Skyrim has a boring main plot. Story has never been Bethesda's strength. They can build a gorgeous, immersive world, but they can't quite match the aesthetics of their creations plotwise. I guess that makes them the James Cameron of video gaming.

Hell no. Gimme the illusion with big ass environments but not an actual open world where its just a lot of space filled with nothing and makes travelling super painful.

Of course they're looking at Skyrim. They're probably looking at Halo and Bioshock and Madden and XCOM and AssCreed. Why? Innovation. You don't copy those games but if they do something awesome then wouldn't it make sense to try and find a way to incorporate that to your own game?

Open world often means messed-up pacing. And pacing is essensial to any good story.

It doesn't have to be like Skyrim, but please no more dotted line travel with recycled "encounters", we do not have a spaceship and companions aren't pokemons.

I really hope there isn't any American football or base-building strategy in DA3...

I believe somewhere a dev or someone mentioned that they had looked heavily at games such as Skyrim for DA3, if I find the source i'll add it.

Open world ala Skyrim and *cringe* Oblivion? No thanks! Bland characters, uninspired storytelling and boredom heaped upon boredom.

Open world ala Fallout: New Vegas? Yes, thank you very much. Great characters, inspired storylines and so many hidden gems and surprises.
