Because water monsters are more likely to exist and far more prevalent in fiction than lava monsters or gobity goop monsters.

Plus, did anyone see the giant squid attacking the ship during Varric's post-Lothering monologue?

I think 8-Bit Theater said it best:

"They may be monsters, but they're sea monsters. What are they going to do? Flop around on deck and suffocate at us threateningly?"

I never said sea monsters in my original post. Lakes, and ponds are water inland. Please don't change my original concept to find a joke. If you know about the fantasy world of mages, golems, and witches you would know water creatures play a part on it.

You're right. That was so careless of me. Here, I'll paraphrase instead of quote.

"They may be monsters, but they're water monsters. What are they going to do? Flop around on deck and suffocate at us threateningly?"

"Sea" monsters or lake monsters or whatever in the genres similar to the DA setting often reach out of the water to grab their prey when its cornered and fight scenes ensue.

LotR had the cliff face trapping them. 20KLotS had them trapped on the vessel. Caves, docks, bridges ... many opportunities to get ambushed and cornered by snake-like things coming from the water.

Suggesting that water monsters will flop up on deck and suffocate suggests that water monsters in the DA setting are simply fish and not actually monsters one would expect to find.
