According to the leaked survey and other stuff that has been popping up in the Forums, someone in Thedas has been pulling the strings to cause problems with the Chantry, Templars, Mages etc.

So who are the likely candidates for the Big Bad that will be the mastermind behind all the chaos?

Flementh sees that most popular one according to the forums.  But I actually think she is unrelated to all this.  She has her own plans that haven't been explain.  After all, she helps Hawke and The Warden.  Why?  Ditto for Morrigan.

The Wardens:  There is currently a nice little conspiracy theory about this on these forums.  What exactly was Stroud and Nathaniel doing?

Mages/Templars:  Extreme Factions that could have masterminds manipulating everything.

And then, my personal favourite theory, because it's a bit of curveball:  The Friends of Red Jenny.  We know nothing about them, but they have appeared in two games.   I tend to view them as a kind of mafia (which is complete speculation) but it would neat if Red Jenny was behind everything.

Any other likely candidates?  Anyone of the above seem undeniable?

I don't know that anything/anyone is truly pulling any strings (and being as the survey is unauthenticated, I don't know that it has a whole lot of credibility at this point). I think there will be villains of note, and variations of a Big Bad, but that when the dust settles and the smoke clears, the real "evil" in the Dragon Age universe will be mortal-kind. Greed and hubris are the forces most at work behind the negative forces currently in play.

Agreed. The Orlesians are behind it all.

That will make it awkward if you are an Orlesian in the game... unless... the Inquisitor is the Big Bad and you end up killing yourself (PS:T anyone?)

Orlesians can't be heroes. That's a fact. Loghain told me so.

If we're Orlesian, then we'll be playing as the villain, just like anyone who started a new character in Awakening.

Not really sure if strings are being pulled but I am hoping it goes something like this. The seekers of
truth come in to put order back into kirkwall, because of the destruction of the chantry and the grand cleric as well as the decimation of the templars. That could allow
for different races taking up sides with different factions (city guard, chantry, nobles, elves, Qunari, various guilds, etc.) all trying
to influence the Seekers to there factions cause. That could allow all
the races, elves dwarves qunari human, and all classes fighter rogue
mage, templar, chantry cleric, maybe even a member of the seekers. Wow a
Qunari talvasoth seeker who gave up his belief in the Qun for the teachings of the chantry, all very interesting and all great to play.  That way you could assist Cassandra or subvert her mission which most likely is to find Hawke and get the truth of what happened in Kirkwall. Or maybe join with the nobles or the city guard, or some free mages to drive the seekers out of the city and make it truly free. As each of those races or Origins if you will start with a small background and each ends up in kirkwall as the seekers of truth arrive.

I would be interested in seeing what the rest of you have as ideas for whats coming and what you think of what I am hoping gets delivered.

Personally I think it would be a borderline free-for-all. People going crazy all over the place, not just one main "Big Bad"

I think that Flemeth is a red herring. It's the Empress of Orlias behind it all.

Flemeth-Sees the future and gets Hawke to Kirkwall in order to start the mage war. Being able to see the future is a pretty convenient way to justify insanely convoluted plans.

The Illusive Man probabaly ...

But hm. I dunno. Would be interesting if one party thinks they are pulling the strings, when they are just another puppet for a stronger party, so to speak.

*mind is blown*

I don't think Flemeth sees the future, I think she's dangerously smart and is able to predict (not with magic, but intelligence) what are possible outcomes because if she could predict the future, she would know at Sundermount if Morrigan had actually killed her other aspect? Piece? Whatever no so far it has only been proven that she is very, very smart and very, very powerful and not psychic.

Pre-DA2, i could agree. But in DA2 something was quite obviously pulling the strings, whether it be the relic from the primeval thaig or [if you read the codex entries] the fact that the barrier between the fade and the real world was almost nonexistant in Kirkwall, and the resulting mage/templar war is almost guaranteed to shred the barrier in the entire world.

obviously, something somewhere benefits. And there's your big bad.

Probably a daemon or a blood-mage with a daemon in side them. Something pure evil would be nice.

Hopefully there will be THREE different bad guy characters. One that would be the bad guy if you sided with the mages or templars, one if you side with the mages or remain neutral, and one if you side with the templars or remain neutral. So you would have two bad guys per game, but three POTENTIAL bad guys.
I love this idea to pieces, honestly.

It'll be one of the companions, hired by a sect of the Inquisition to make sure the protagonist fingers the wrong people as the cause of Thedas' problems. The protagonist can fall for it and end the game early in a non-canon ending (as the game is incomplete, a "loss").

Flemeth is too obivous. There will probably be a couple bosses but the one pulling the strings? Fen'Harel, the Dread Wolf. Perhaps in league with Flemeth. And there's always Morrigan. And probably Corpheyus is in there too. And a really big jerk of a Seeker or Templar. Or a really powerful Magister of Tevinter. Many options.

I kind of hope there isn't a mysterious force pulling the strings behind the scenes, and i REALLY hope this puppet master isn't introduced at the end of the game . . . i'm pretty sure you know where i'm going with this.Posted Image

Cullen because in both games he has been at the major places where there has been problems, I believe that Cullen is a demon of chaos and his main goal is to spread chaos across the world.
