It can't be Corypheus Hawke and the party killed him.

lol

Why must there be a big bad? Why not just conflicts between mages/tempars, nations, chantry/qunari. Etc.

I'd like that too, but DA2 threw a 'mortal cause' out the window. There's definetly something manipulating the events behind the scenes and it's up to the Inquisitor to find out who.

Well. According to DA2 a stupid looking crystal was behind it all.

I think it is Maker himself. So you have to kill him and take his place!!!!

After completing the "Witch Hunt" DLC a few times and Flemeths quote about change in DA2 I'm putting my money on it being her.

Why would she want the mages to Rebel? Even if they end up putting all the mages down it's not like magic will be purged from the world forever. You can take two people that aren't mages and their child could end up a mage.

Unless the Divine is secretly a mage then I doubt she's behind the war.

Bingo!

That right there is the answer. She is secretly a mage. I could see that twist being in there

Cullen because in both games he has been at the major places where there has been problems, I believe that Cullen is a demon of chaos and his main goal is to spread chaos across the world.

Must be. Just look at the way he reaches across time, space, and the boundaries of reality to mind control his legions of fangirls.

It's all a plot by the Tevinter Imperium to regain their former power. They'll sow chaos amongst the nations of Thedas, inciting the mage rebellion, orchestrating a Qunari invasion of Ferelden and Orlais, trying to start another Blight. Then, when the dust settles and everyone is bloody and broken, they'll sweep in and conquer the world.

Startling revelations will come to light. It was a Tevinter agent who convinced Loghain to abandon the King and the Grey Wardens. It was Tevinter agents who manipulated the residents of Kirkwall and the Qunari, driving them towards a conflict. It was Tevinter who helped Anders blow up the Chantry.

Or you know, what ever. I'm just spitballing here.

Whichever one you chose before the battle with him, be it mad decaying Warden or "fresh" and not-so-mad Warden, they do not seem to be same person at all afterward. Even in their speech patterns...

Justice/Vengance is a possibility too.

If Anders is alive maybe during the war he gets overpowered by Justice and Justice takes primary control, or if Anders was killed Justice takes control of the dead body (like Kristoff in Awakening)

I would say, since ME3 you can't be sure who is antagonist until you have finished the game.

Someone in tevinter because they would weaken everyone else and would then be able to take control. This could also work with qunari. But maybe it is someone suffering from the taint and is helping clear the way for the next arch demon

Well they can't really just leave them out of the story anyway. If Anders is alive then he will obviously be with the mage rebellion and if Anders is dead the spirit of Justice had to go somewhere.

Even if Anders' story is done, Justice's story still isn't. I actually do believe Vengence will be a player in DA3. (whether Anders living or shanked)

IMO it would be quite awesome if at the end we figure out this whole mage/templar war was the work of a few powerful demons (possibly the Forbidden Ones among GaxKang the unbound and Xebenkeck) who had been planning this since they first taught blood magic to the Tevinter Magisters. By having the templars pushing the mages into a corner, most of them would resort to blood magic, sundering and possibly destroying the veil throughout thedas.

The Black Divine and the Tevinter seems the most likely.

Also the White Divine, betrayal at the heart of the Chantry.
