It's think the big bad might be Morrigan, she seemed very intent on changing the world and has gotten the soul of an old god for some reason, A mage rebellion tearing open portals to the fade seems like something she'd do. I still don't know what her ultimate goal is but she's certainly up to something

If Anders is alive then he will obviously be with the mage rebellion

I rivalry'd Anders and convinced him to help me damage control and side with Templars. The final conversation gave some pretty clear indications that he'd be committing suicide in an effort to free both himself and his friend Justice.

Just wanted to add that.

Flemeth is so beyond mortal politics- it's someone more mundane than 'the' Flemeth.

I am not sure OGB is canon, or is it?

I think a dragon cult is behind/directing some of the chaos. Aurelian Titus and his followers maybe. Powerful blood mages-- magically and politically-- that worship the Old Gods and want to see them freed and uncorrupted. With the world in chaos no one would be able to kill their remaining dragon-gods. Maybe they hope to gain more power from Old Gods by freeing/serving them, create a New World Order with dragon priests magisters at the top like in the old Imperium, destroy their enemies etc.

Perhaps they've come into contact with Corypheus. The old school powerful darkspawn-like magister who worshied the Old Gods and still "seeks the light"-- power promised to them by the dragons.

But hm. I dunno. Would be interesting if one party thinks they are pulling the strings, when they are just another puppet for a stronger party, so to speak.

*mind is blown*

Please not another catalyst!!!

Andraste and the socalled maker! They are getting rid of mages because they would be the onlyones who can fight them.

Since Flemeth helped Hawke (and so set to motion the dominoes that ended up destroying Kirkwall) I actually think it might be her - but not her at the same time. I think there's a lot we don't know about her: she's way too powerful and knowledgeable than a normal shapeshifter/apostate, but at the same time something tells me she isn't exactly her own boss, either. So, she might be an agent of the Big Bad, maybe of her own free will, maybe not.

I have a feeling the Big Bad might be something completely otherworldly - maybe one of the Forbidden Ones/other big bad demons stirring something for their own gain, and that "something" of the blood-magic kind probably requires huge amount of blood-shed, like, civil war/Inquisition.
