There is no gameplay argument... Aesthetics matter to people, so the whole "but it has no effect on the gameplay!" argument is irrelevant.
This. The Volus are another good example: the epic freakout over the past couple of weeks had nothing to do with their abilities (which are interesting and mostly new), but rather what character models were being used.
However, there is a backdoor to bringing gameplay back in: the Volus are also an example of the devs bringing lore to bear on a gameplay problem. They were interested in building specialized support characters, and the Volus are a prime example of a species with no front-line infantry; the lore justified the extension of the design space, and vice-versa.
So other than the fact that I'd get to play a Prothean, which would be awesome, bringing Protheans in would allow BW to poke into some new corners of ME3 design. Think Krogan, with more of an emphasis on technology and biotics and less on brute strength; Protheans would fit very nicely into the Sentinel slot, as well as giving us the perfect excuse for AR-wielding biotic Soldiers.
Also, their biotics would be green. And how can you argue with green biotics?
