How do you feel about 'References'?

Frankly, I think it's gotten out of hand. Having played TOR, all of the Mass Effects and Dragon Ages, I feel that inclusion of internet memes, such as "The Cake is a Lie." "I like big boats, I cannot lie" and "Step 3, Profit" dates the product during the time of its conception rather than making it a timeless tale. All the same, I feel that inside jokes such as "Swooping is bad." "Risk, but the priiiiize" and others show too much emphasis on winking and nodding to something that's short-lived.
I don't mind one or two references, but I feel overemphasis on these parts and not the main quest would make the work weaker as a whole.

Did you really feel that the writers spent more time on in-jokes than on the main quest stories of any of the games you listed?Burnouts3s3 wrote...

I prefer humour which makes sense from an in universe point of view.

I mean. She does! She has ever since DAO.

But it has to be appropriate, like no funny reference in an otherwise heartbreaking scene or let it become like in World of Warcraft where half of everything is a reference of some sort - then it just breaks the authenticity of the universe. But I kinda trust Bioware on this, they haven't done anything to cause concern before.

How, for example, does Isabela saying "I like big boats, I cannot lie" not make sense from an in universe point of view?

Well, I'm pretty sure she likes big ships rather than boats. She'd probably stab you if you called her ship a boat.
But anyway, the point is it's not funny from an in universe perspective. Without the out of universe reference, it's just a distinctly odd choice of phrasing.

To put it simpler, i believe good solid works get referenced themselves rather than reference.

They're funny to me and the ones I didn't get didn't affect my opinion on the game in any way. Obviously they shouldn't be used at inappropriate times like a funeral or whatever, but I never had reason to complain about the way Bioware did it.

Alistair wouldn't be Alistair without "Swooping is bad"
And Isabela would feninitely not be Isabela without "I like big boats. I cannot lie."

That line wasn't a reference to anything else when it appeared in DAO though, right? Which would perhaps confirm what people are saying here -- it's the original material that makes characters memorable. Falling back on cheap references effectively means giving up on an opportunity to coin another "iconic" dialogue in that place, whenever it happens.Wotannanow wrote...

A lot of funny situations can be born of this. I.e. the thing about arrows in the knee is a joke about the change in armour system that included no kneecaps.
I bet there is a joke somewhere in DA:I about all the caves looking the same, or something about artistic integrity.

I like it when popular media reference each other. As long as it's not too forced.

I made a post about it a while back. Sadly many people think these jokes are great. I rarely find them funny. And when I do find them funny, they still break my immersion, because they make me think of something that has nothing to do with the game.
Here is the post I made:

But yes, I dislike out-of-universe references, but I don't mind and indeed like in-universe references. Only not too much, and not all at once, and not breathing in the dust, and not direct in the blood...ancestor's bad luck.
