One mild nitpick I would have on the Dragon Age writing is the inclusion of 'references', such as popular memes or inside jokes.

Frankly, I think it's gotten out of hand. Having played TOR, all of the Mass Effects and Dragon Ages, I feel that inclusion of internet memes, such as "The Cake is a Lie." "I like big boats, I cannot lie" and "Step 3, Profit" dates the product during the time of its conception rather than making it a timeless tale. All the same, I feel that inside jokes such as "Swooping is bad." "Risk, but the priiiiize" and others show too much emphasis on winking and nodding to something that's short-lived.

I don't mind one or two references, but I feel overemphasis on these parts and not the main quest would make the work weaker as a whole.

While I agree that it can be overdone a bit, I don't think it dates the material within the story. Perhaps the references could fade into obscurity over the years, but I don't think that has any bearing on the plot or adversely affect the storytelling for someone who doesn't "get it".

Did you really feel that the writers spent more time on in-jokes than on the main quest stories of any of the games you listed?

I did think they were overdone in DA2.

I prefer humour which makes sense from an in universe point of view.

How, for example, does Isabela saying "I like big boats, I cannot lie" not make sense from an in universe point of view?

I mean. She does! She has ever since DAO.

If it doesn't go overboard it's fine imo. A little humour hasn't harmed anyone.

But it has to be appropriate, like no funny reference in an otherwise heartbreaking scene or let it become like in World of Warcraft where half of everything is a reference of some sort - then it just breaks the authenticity of the universe. But I kinda trust Bioware on this, they haven't done anything to cause concern before.

Well, I'm pretty sure she likes big ships rather than boats.  She'd probably stab you if you called her ship a boat.

But anyway, the point is it's not funny from an in universe perspective.  Without the out of universe reference, it's just a distinctly odd choice of phrasing.

I dislike these things, generally. The "humour" is one note ("oh look we are quoting something, isn't that side-splitting funny?") and relies on the player actually being familiar with the original material which is by no means guaranteed -- and when they aren't, the "joke" becomes just a dull exchange at best and nonsensical dialogue at worst, while having some original material there instead can always work on its own.

To put it simpler, i believe good solid works get referenced themselves rather than reference.

I do like references.
They're funny to me and the ones I didn't get didn't affect my opinion on the game in any way. Obviously they shouldn't be used at inappropriate times like a funeral or whatever, but I never had reason to complain about the way Bioware did it.

Never really thought about this but yeah I agree. References are alright occasionally but I'd much rather have most of the humor come from in world so it actually makes sense to the characters.

You have a point. But I haven't been bothered by them. I thought they added character to the characters.
Alistair wouldn't be Alistair without "Swooping is bad"
And Isabela would feninitely not be Isabela without "I like big boats. I cannot lie."

They're horrible. The "I like big boats" line made me cringe.

Yuk.

In the (paraphrased) words of Tim Cain: The reference should be so subtle that if you don't know the source material, you shouldn't notice it.

(Said around 24:30 into this: )

That line wasn't a reference to anything else when it appeared in DAO though, right? Which would perhaps confirm what people are saying here -- it's the original material that makes characters memorable. Falling back on cheap references effectively means giving up on an opportunity to coin another "iconic" dialogue in that place, whenever it happens.

there fun and funny and i'm willing to bet that only about 30% of people who play well get every references anyway it's fun to be like hey i see what you did there and lol at it. take the sir mix a lot one for example the people who caught that are probably over the age 20 who maybe listened to the song in the 90s for the younger player it'd just go over there head. yeah maybe no one will get it 10 or 20 years down the line will that make it less fun? i say hell no cause it'll just be random funny words that mean nothing and i don't see a problem with it. so let them have their fun because it is funny as f*ck to get them but if you don't it no big deal.
my point is there is no harm in it being there so leave them alone!

I like it when popular media reference each other. As long as it's not too forced.

A lot of funny situations can be born of this. I.e. the thing about arrows in the knee is a joke about the change in armour system that included no kneecaps.

I bet there is a joke somewhere in DA:I about all the caves looking the same, or something about artistic integrity.

I don't think it dates the material, but I do think some of the references fall a bit flat. I don't mind any kind of joke if it is funny, but I do mind any kind of joke if its not.

I don't like them.

I made a post about it a while back. Sadly many people think these jokes are great. I rarely find them funny. And when I do find them funny, they still break my immersion, because they make me think of something that has nothing to do with the game.

Here is the post I made:

But anyway OP. Like my post, your post will likely not get much attention either, because it has nothing to do with romances.

I dislike out-of-universe references. However, I never caught "the cake is a lie," "step 3, profit," and I don't even know what I like big boats refers to.

But yes, I dislike out-of-universe references, but I don't mind and indeed like in-universe references. Only not too much, and not all at once, and not breathing in the dust, and not direct in the blood...ancestor's bad luck.
