The references affect nothing. If you do not get the reference it does not matter because you will not get the joke. Isabela is a pirate so her saying she likes big boats. I cannot lie is universal. Pirates like big boats (ships). The quote fits her character. So if you know nothing about Sir Mixalot. It would not matter. Just like EntropicAngel did not get the reference until it was pointed out.

Step 3 Profit does not matter because in the conversation Isabela is counting the steps and making money is the way pirates keep score.

You need a frame of reference to get the reference otherwise it does not matter. I chucle at the references. Just like a chuckle at the references in Family Guy.

Alstair references DAO in DA2 concerning Isabela when he says you look different. The reference is lost on anyone who has not played DAO.
The practice is an offshoot variant of the Easter Egg and has been around since the beginning of video games.

How, for example, does Isabela saying "I like big boats, I cannot lie" not make sense from an in universe point of view?

I mean. She does! She has ever since DAO.

Well, I'm pretty sure she likes big ships rather than boats.  She'd probably stab you if you called her ship a boat.

That's assuming that by "boats," she means the wooden vessels used for sailing across the ocean.

As for the references in-game, be they from pop culture or literature, I enjoy them. They're usually injected in banter or a random codex entry in a manner that makes sense for the situation and/or character. I hope they return as they're often quite amusing.

Perhaps she simply appreciates alliteration.

I wouldn't want them to omit 'pop culture' references, though I do think there comes a point where it starts to feel overdone. I couldn't pinpoint where that point is, it's just the kind of thing that you start to feel in your gut when the projectile vomit launcher is being prepped.

I'm going to guess she likes both.

They don't bother me. Most of them probably sail right over my head, so it makes no difference one way or another.

I dislike out-of-universe references. However, I never caught "the cake is a lie," "step 3, profit," and I don't even know what I like big boats refers to.

But yes, I dislike out-of-universe references, but I don't mind and indeed like in-universe references. Only not too much, and not all at once, and not breathing in the dust, and not direct in the blood...ancestor's bad luck.

You're not alone. The boat one swam right past me (never heard that song in my life) and I certainly didn't think something so mundane as "step 3, profit" could be a reference to something. I did make the connection between Portal and the cake line but that's only because that particular game was in fresh memory.

I have to say though, none of those lines bothered me. So I didn't get the joke but since I didn't know there was one, I didn't feel like I lost anything. I don't mind out-of-universe references as long as they are written in a way that the line still works in the context of the game even if the player fails to get the joke.

However, I prefer jokes that are set to work within the universe. It's not just about the immersion (though it matters). I feel that working within the universe requires more skill from the writers. References are an easy way out and they're always catered to a limited group of players. Especially non-native English speakers like me might not have the best knowledge of obscure pop culture references (in spite of the Internet age).

Generally, I enjoy them, but I, too, found them overdone in DA2, as if the team didn't have enough confidence in their own game to work within the confines of the setting. It didn't send a very good message, in my opinion. So I'd caution the writers against layering the out-of-universe references on too thickly. Subtlety is a good watch-word, yes.

DA:O struck a lovely balance, I thought.

I think someone else in this thread said something similar to how I feel. Basically, I'm fine with references as long as they still make sense in context. If you have to know the original source for the line to make sense, it's not going to work for me. If it makes sense either way, than people who don't get the reference aren't left confused. I also prefer references that make sense in context because its feels more coincidental than forced, and forced references are what tend to upset people or negatively impact the conversation/situation the reference is used in.

They need to make more Bioware references, better yet, BSN references.

There should a scene where the PC puts down a foe that has been pestering them for a while and replies "End of Line, troll."

I thought one of Arl Foreshadow's notes already covered that - "The Origin of Theses: Knowing more than Everyone without Looking Like a Jackass."

I prefer references within the games - or other, related games. Like pantaloons.

One mild nitpick I would have on the Dragon Age writing is the inclusion of 'references', such as popular memes or inside jokes.

Frankly, I think it's gotten out of hand. Having played TOR, all of the Mass Effects and Dragon Ages, I feel that inclusion of internet memes, such as "The Cake is a Lie." "I like big boats, I cannot lie" and "Step 3, Profit" dates the product during the time of its conception rather than making it a timeless tale. All the same, I feel that inside jokes such as "Swooping is bad." "Risk, but the priiiiize" and others show too much emphasis on winking and nodding to something that's short-lived.

I don't mind one or two references, but I feel overemphasis on these parts and not the main quest would make the work weaker as a whole.

Yeah. This stuff tends to kinda makes me cringe when it comes up in a game. Particularly when they reference their own material, like "Swooping is bad." Overdoing it. Less, please.

ME3 actually felt like it had a few too many BSN references, actually. I think Garrus's calibrations was mentioned at least twice in major conversations, with a few more implied references in side conversations. There were other, more subtle ones, but that one stuck out with how heavy handed it was.

On a completely different note, I'm not sure if it fully counts as a reference but I loved the DA2 line from sarcastic Hawke "Someone spent too much time thinking about my name." Nice way to insult my 30-min chargen naming session, Hawke!

References are nice.

As long as they're done well/cleverly and not shoehorned of course.

Yeah, they really need to fit the scene. King Alistair's "swooping" line felt too forced, for instance. Like the entire conversation was written specifically to put that line in.
