They need to make more Bioware references, better yet, BSN references.

There should a scene where the PC puts down a foe that has been pestering them for a while and replies "End of Line, troll."

Just a bit of trivia... One of the characters in the BG2 expansion Throne of Bhaal was actually named after one of the Bioware Boards most prominent posters. In addition, that character actually used the poster's forum sig in his dialogue.

I feel like they're the key to any good essay, otherwise you're just rambling on.

Makes me cringe. It's really the cheapest form of humour, and it's depressing that so many people are amused by it. But then it stems from the same thing that makes memes "funny", I suppose.

I'm deathly afraid of spanish inquisition references. If it happens, I will put my head on my desk and sob quietly for a while, lamenting what Bioware has become.

But then I'll keep playing, because the games are still good despite ****ty reference jokes, not because of them.

Exactly how I feel about it.

Ugh.. No.

I think I might cry if they pull this line on me.

At this point Bioware sounds like that weird older dude who likes to hang out around teenagers, and spout reference so they can look "cool".

I like them for the most part but they can definitely be overused. Too many calibrations jokes in ME3, I think there were like 3 separate occasions where they mentioned Garrus calibrating.

I agree.

2 out of 10 for trying though.

You're right! They never referenced anything for comedic purposes in their earlier games.

I don't mind one or two references, but I feel overemphasis on these parts and not the main quest would make the work weaker as a whole.

Yes, focusing on references over the main plot would weaken the game, so it's a good thing that scenario is completely preposterous.

Those references have been in most of the Bioware games since BG1. BG2 and DAO  had  nods to Gary Gygax in the form of  Kangaxx and Gaxkang respectively. Other D & D and popular culture references have been in most of the games..

Too much references make the game feel really dated when you play it later on.

Like play FO2, that game was full of references and they're quite old ones. Made the game feel too cheesy, and while jokes are always good to have, too much just takes away from the setting.

A reference every now and then is good, but they shouldn't be overly done, or hamfisted.

What one person fines humorous another doesn't. With such divergent levels in humor how does one create it so all enjoy it? Saying it shouldn't be overdone is fine, except I, nor the bioware staff has no idea where to draw the line at. So assume they only have themselves to gauge where something goes overboard.

Anyway I guess it doesn't bother me. I enjoyed most of the references, at least the ones I got. So it doesn't bother me.

I do think they shouldn't expend too much effort, they're usually not that funny and they can be a bit dated or obscure. On Family Guy, sure, but in general it kinds of makes me take things less seriously when I catch an over-obvious or shoe-horned in one. I think it's lazy writing, I would say if I were being harsh and critical which I am.

They did get a laugh out of me with "A wizard did it", that fit perfectly and was pretty funny.

I'm okay with references to pop culture as long as they first and foremost make sense within the context that they are used.

Isabela's line about big boats was fine. I don't remember any cake jokes in the DA games.

I think the self-referential jokes are worse, frankly. I don't want Alistair saying "swooping is bad" every single goddamn time he shows up. I don't understand where the fascination for this line comes from. It wasn't that funny the first time.

References to well regarded works of fiction is something I enjoy as long as it doesn't get too ridiculous. References to short lived memes that even I won't catch when I replay the game in a few years is something I do not enjoy.

But if you don't catch a reference, then it just seems like an ordinary line.

What about references to male porn actors, such as Peter of the North in Baldur's Gate?

As long as they don't become hackneyed or cliched, I support these.

Let us not forget Larry, Darryl, & Darryl.  Secondary characters in '80's sitcoms were also represented in BG. :wizard:

I will always treasure their autograph.
