First, you need health potions. Set the AI to drink lesser health poutches when it gets to 50% health. Use your mage (if you have one) to give a weapon buff like fire enchant. Have Alastor tank the Ogre (or more like get beat by it) while you move behind for the flank attack. Getting that flank attack and prevent the enemy from flanking you is what this game is all about. On hard, you'll die fast if your flanked, even basic enemies will kill you if they can flank you. If your mage has any debuff spells or your fighters/rogue have any disabling talents then use them! Don't forget to use your talents effectively, they turn a hard battle into an easier on.

In the worst case, just run away from the ogre when he focuses on a character and have a mage cast the heal spell.

What's your character? My mage froze the guy, then gave the party flaming swords and watched them smash the thing to pieces in no time.

The flaming swords spell definitely works well. That's the first spell you should have your mage activate. If you can, make sure you have a lot of healing potions before you start the battle, just in case (I was playing a warrior, and the mage I was given to accompany me didn't have any healing spells at all - don't know if that's normal).

If things are going badly and some of your characters are low on health, have your warrior activate taunt or threaten, to get the Ogre off your back and allow you to quash some potions. Just make sure your warrior has a lot of health before he does that - because if the Ogre grabs him and he's low on health, he's practically done for.

Try to keep your mage out of the fight and providing secondary fire, like lightening, mind blast etc.

There seems to be a bit of luck involved in the fight as well - I've done it several times now - some times the Ogre has gone down easily, and others it's been a struggle.

It really depends on the makeup of your party. In general, you want to flank the guy, you want to have that mage buff your attacks, and you want to use any and all daze/disable attacks/spells you have in order to limit the number of attacks the ogre gets on your guys.

I beat the ogre with two shield/sword specs (Alistair and my guy) by juggling off shield bashing him to keep him dazed, flanking him, having the mage flame my swords, and having the war hound shout him whenever he could and otherwise just keep hacking away. I beat him on hard with no healing spells left, he downed me to the last guy, but got him.

Very fun fight.

I kited him around the room. He is pretty easy to stun. My melee hits him in the back while I run around with the mage. If melee gets the aggro, then spread out in 3 directions. No one died.

Spread three ranged characters out to different places on the perimiter. Take a tank character and taunt or otherwise draw him agro on him. The have your ranged characters hit him with aggro while he chases the tank around. Just keep moving your tank and heal him as necessary. Pelt him with arrows and spells while distracted by tank. Takes a good long while, but I beat it my first try on hard.
