A lot of people complains about cheating but in my opinion you can't cheat in a single player game, since the main point is for you and yourself only to have fun.
This being said, i want to give an example on how you can have fun using cheats in a balanced way.

Backstory: you are the second son of the Cousland family, at age of 6 while playing with your mother you show a magical potential setting fire to a puppet with only your will. Your mother is scared that templars might bring you to the tower of magi and she will not see you again, so tells you to keep your magic skill secret and instead make you train as a warrior. You grow up knowing if you show your magic talent  you will be brought to circle that you see as a prison compared to your life in Cousland castle.

[SPOILER] when your family is attacked by Howe man you unleash again your magical powers to defend yourself and your family. When you escape with Duncan as a Grey Warden the fact you are an apostate matters no more since you must defeat the blight. [END SPOILER]

Way to do it:
Enable cheat code console
Create a new human warrior/rogue character
when you first gain control of PC use
1: cheat code to become a lvl 1 mage: you will keep warrior or rogue attributes and you are even loosing some attribute point, but you will be a mage without any spell
2: cheat code to enable arcane warrior specialization
3: cheat code to give you the first talent of arcane warrior spec
4: cheat code to give you one spell of you choice
5: set difficulty to nightmere

It's fun, it's balanced, and you have a good backstory to feed your fantasy.

ISSUE: npc are going to see you as a mage, and in some dialogues as cousland, but when you reach tower it will be as you had the mage origin story, and

[SPOILER: Anora will not marry you since she sees you as a mage and not a noble, wich make sense anyway since during the campaign u show your magical powers to the world [END SPOILER]

Maybe this issue can be fixed with some mod, but if this is not your fist playthrough your fantasy can override this "wrong dialogues" on your origin.

Is a mod called Adopted that will let you start out as a Mage, if you'd rather wait till level 7 to be an Arcane Warrior.

I prefer mods to using the console, because having the Console enabled prevents you from uploading characters to the social site
