I believe it is imperative we have a Tevinter Mage/Magister follower in DA3.

I find it very hard to side with the Templars in Dragon Age. What we know is that the current way Mages are treated in popular society throughout Thedas has been a response to the notoriety of the old, mage-ruled Tevinter Empire. Excluding the runaway slave Fenris, we don't know a great deal about Tevinter society, especially its intricacies. I think a Tevinter Mage/Magister would be a great opportunity to offer more exposition on the Tevinter Imperium and show the dangers of a magocracy, maybe even the potential dangers of a society of free mages. I think this character should be an experienced mage, jaded from conflict, and maybe even hold a reactionist ideologoy.

Personally, I would imagine him to be something like this: He should be an old man, wise, and an experienced mage. similar to Wynne. He is a former magister and sees joining the PC as an opportunity to leave the Imperium. He wants to leave because his political career has ended recently, he was forced to give up his position after receiving vehement criticism for being an advocate of reforming Tevinter society. Although he wants to see the Imperium change, he still has some reactionist beliefs. While he will concede that some things were wrong with it and acknowledges the Imperium's weaknesses, he is a strong admirer of the old, powerful Tevinter Imperium. He would like to see the Imperium become a more powerful and influential sovereign. He is also a cvery cynical, of mages, of Templars, of the Chantry, it doesn't matter; his loyalty and respect are very difficult to earn.

As a Tevinter, he dislikes the Chantry and Andrastians, especially fanatics. Morality-wise, he should be neutral or something like a Renegon. He tries to be impartial and doesn't spout his beliefs anymore (he'll dislike anyone who does), but he will be ruthless and vindictive.

What are your thoughts?

I'd like it entirely for the same reason I was wanting a batarian squad mate in ME3. It's a companion that gives us a face for a group/race that is just evil for the lulz otherwise. This gives us depth even if you dislike the group in question.

Isn't a portion of the game taking place in the Tevinter Imperium? It would make sense if we picked him/her up.

I would also like to know more about Tevinter. There was a female Magister in the comic who seemed 'good', so maybe her?

I don't know about "imperative". But it would be nice to interact with a non-villainous example of a Tevinter magister.

Well that would be Dorian, according the leaked survey ;)

What if we get a Tevinter mage companion.... but that mage is evil and all about attaining power. Would that be all right? Would you look at that character like Sten in Origins. "It's just his culture" or would that make you dislike the character?

This is my interesting question. Since we all seem to think getting a Tevinter mage companion would mean getting a decent human being and not the clearest example of his culture... which is upwardly mobile and "the weak exist to serve the strong."

Usually by being a living battery for them.

I disliked Sten because of his culture. I don't like Qunari, so on my second playthrough I just left him in his cage.

Well I have no idea what the Tevinter companion alleged in the survey would be like in terms of personality or  morality.  If his beliefs are close to that to my PC, friendship.  If his beliefs are opposed to my PC's, rivalry.  That's pretty much how I dealt with the characters in DA2.

Maybe this character shouldn't be a good or evil? I think the best idea would be if he were "neutral".

You know, like, he has common sense, but also can break rules to get what he wants, I do not know, whatever.
He should be a character able to express the good and bad side of Tevinter. And not just one.

how about we completely do away with the idea of 'good and evil', it's childish anyway.
A good, well-written character has motives for his action, fully explained within the character and his development and personality. A good example would be Loghain.

A tevinter magister/apprentice as a companion would be great, just so we can find out more about Tevintar culutre, possibly from someone who isn't horribly biased against it.

P.S.
"I find it very hard to side with the Templars in Dragon Age."
Hmm, i find it very easy to actually side with the Templars, and go all gungho on the mages. The leader of the circle in Kirkwall even goes full abomination when he's backed into a corner, kind of proving Meredith's point (what little point there is anyway, because of that damn doll)

Despite the common view of Tevinter as a bastion for evil, Fenris mentioned there was a Magister who tried to abolish slavery. It's the only society where elves can climb the social ladder. I doubt all Magisters in Tevinter are inherently evil. It would be interesting to encounter a three-dimensional Magister for a change.

Uh, please don't make him evil. We already have every DA game with an "evil" mages. I'd like a DA game where the mages aren't the evil companion.

And he was quickly assassinated, because the Imperium's economy would collapse without slavery.

Oh? How so? As far as I can tell, the only options open to the elves in Tevinter is to a) live in poverty, or B) sell themselves into slavery.

A Tevinter mage may just be a normal mage

now a Tevinter magister on the other hand...and didn't they say we were getting one of those with those character suggestions they posted that got taken down?

Yeah I support this, it'd be interesting to hear the Tevinter point of view of things.
