Disc doesn't always read

My computer doesn't always detect the Dragon Age disc in my computer, I have it installed and played it for a few times, so the drive not being able to read DVDs shouldn't be an issue. It's not scratched and it's only been either in my computer or in it's box. Other discs play just fine. This seems fairly random, but frequent. Sometimes booting the computer helps but most of time time not. I'm using Windows Vista if that helps. Any help on the issue is appreciated.

EDIT: I won't bump this thread, but if anyone finds this by search and has the same problem, if the disc doesn't read it's better to just restart and try it again.

Try disabling the autorun on that disk drive. It sometimes helped, if with other games…

Some other things to think about - are you running the game as the admin?

UAC on or off?

I disabled autorun, and it read the disc! I don't know whether it was luck or if it fixed it completely, but thanks

So let’s hope it has fixed it for good.

If the problem returned try to take out and put in your DA:O disc to the drive a few times in a row (with the autorun off). It sometimes works too, especially with a bit older drives.

And sometimes upgrading the firmware of the optical drive or deleting IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers can be a solution, too, but hopefully it won’t be necessary here.

Good luck!

Got the problem again today, but taking the disc out and back in made it read again. The computer's not new, and I doubt the drive was too new either when the computer was. Re-inserting the disc once will do for now as it's pretty quick to do, so thanks again.

I thought I'd give this a try too. It still takes an abnormally long time to access the DVD, suggesting that there's still something weird going on with the Dragon Age disc specifically, but at least it doesn't go absolutely nuts now that it's not trying to auto-run; so even though the problem probably hasn't gone away, this does at least ameliorate it somewhat.

Glad to hear I could help. Image IPB
But to add more to it - some problem I had in the past with the DVD burners made me delete all my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (in the Device Manager). They were reinstalled automatically (needs two reboots, you are prompted for it by the system). Since then my both optical drives have been working much better and faster.
So maybe such a solution should be recommend to you, too? (that is if you don’t have a RAID system, which would make reinstalling it more problematic). So if you are determined enough or like experimenting you can give it a shot... Making a System Restore Point before taking such action is recommended, too.

I tried deleting and reinstalling the controllers but it didn't help. Other DVD only compatible discs work fine, and my laptop reads the DVD like normal.

I actually went and reinstalled my OS (Vista) again, which didn't resolve the problem either. I found it sometimes takes quite a few tries, and I haven't been able to play it today. I'm not sure what could be the problem, I hope the only solution isn't to buy a completely new drive.

I installed the drivers for it and tried something called Nero InfoTool, I figured it might tell the cause of the problem. It wouldn't start when the Dragon Age disc was in, but if I put it in after it started, it says Unsupported disk type, logically this would mean that it doesn't support DVDs but when I put in the Orange Box DVD it works. Also if I tell it to update the information when I've switched in the DA disc, it crashes.

Hmmm, unfortunately there are different types of DVDs and not all of them seem to be compatible with every optical drive, even if they should be...
But I remembered one more thing that helped one of my friends with a similar problem (inability to detect some discs) – it was not only to disable autorun on the optical drive but also to disable Vista’s CD/DVD burning/recording feature (it can be done in the registries). Maybe you should try it out, too?

And maybe cleaning the drive either with a DVD/CD cleaning kit or simply opening the tray and blowing with compressed air should be recommended here, too and in the first place, if you haven't tried it yet?
