*shrugs* Well it seems that perhaps part of my problem is that I obviously don't understand the difference between longbows and Shortbows... Hell I wasn't even aware there ARE any differences... I just simply thought Shortbow = faster RoF, lower damage while Longbow = slower RoF, higher damage. It seems that there is more to bow selection then just simply high-dex light armor = short/longbow and high-str mid-dex medium/heavy armor =crossbows.
But being a long term fan of sniper characters I simply have a lot of trouble believing that I made such a total balls up of such a character that the best thing to do in a tough fight was abandon everything I'd trained in.
Ohh and BTW my party for 'most all of the game was Alistair(Defence tactics, standard behavior), Warhound(Warhound Tactics, Standard behavior), Wynne (Healer tactics, Ranged behavior)... I do tend to leave my companions to their own AI devices... I find that most of the time they do just fine, simply needed to swap over to chug a healing pot when Wynne was otherwise occupied or Wynne chug a lyrium pot.
I could perhaps be a bit more hands on.. but like I said I tended to find it completely unnecessary... and the times I DID have problems no amount of micromanaging my other characters changed the outcome until I stopped my main character's archery and had her running around backstabbing the weaker mobs to thin the numbers... once the initial swarm was dealt with I would then usually swap back to archery to try and cripple the main opponents while Alistair kept it occupied and my Warhound ripped their ass off, Wynne would be flat out trying to keep everyone alive... although I lost count of the number of times Alistair dropped twice in a single fight (dropped, raised my Wynne before dropping again*... and all this on Normal.... *shakes head* just can't really figure what I was doing wrong.
Ohh well.. see how things go with my DW dwarven berserker.... you guys HAVE said enough though to at least give Leliana a proper go before I replace her with Zevran....
Is it just me....

archery would probably be great if the staple shots (pinning/crippling/shattering) didnt stop you from dpsing for 3 seconds to use them and if pinning wasnt almost always broken immediately by the next auto attack.
also the way the sustained abilities and weapon bonuses work on them is a bit odd. rapid shot is useless with a bow with rapid aim. rapid aim on a bow is useless if you want to use aim.
i usually pull out leliana for the dragon fights because shattering shot with master archer is a -20 armor debuff and makes Sten/Myself + Yusaris a DPS machine, all while being safely out of the way of retribution.
overall its not a useless spec at all, but it is underpowered in some ways until it gets propped back up by arrow of slaying and scattershot at the high levels. for me personally, having two OP abilities and a bunch of merely situationally useful ones doesn't make a class fun. I rather play the two-handed spec the other people complain about.

I think the conclusion would be that yes playing a PC archer sucks until you can get at least shattering shot and perhaps slaying shot as well. Archers certainly have their spot in a party and can be very useful though they do not do MAX dps thats recovered by utility
