What RPGs have you played, Fodder007?

erm.. not many

Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Fable

lol, not a hardcore RPG gamer I know. I like the look of this game and I'm very tempted to buy it but there's a couple of things that might put me off so I want to make sure it's the sort of thing I'm looking for.

I like sandbox games as much as anything and the freedom you get with them. Even more action ones like Infamous or Far Cry. I'm quite open minded really.

I think all the references to an RTS are confusing more than anything else.

Since you're asking about console gameplay, which is pretty different from the PC one, i'll try to explain it (since they said it would play like KotOr and i'm familiar with that):

you have the option to take complete control of any character in your group at any time.

To help you plan your action, you can also pause the game at any time and then give a character (the PC or anyone else) a string of actions to execute.

If you don't want to micromanage your party, you can use a tactics system that the devs have described as similar to the gambit system from FF12, if you're familar with that. If not, it means that you can give "standing orders" for any of your party memebers that the Ai will try to follow when it controls them. For instance, you can tell your healer to heal someone when their HP gets lower than 50%, or your fighter to use an AoE skill if he's close to more than 2 enemies.

And I'm not all against RTS games at all, I used to love playing C&C and the latest one I played was Halo Wars which I really enjoyed.

As huge as this game is, and it is huge, it's not sandbox. You need to know that going in.

That being said, if it's true to form for Bioware, even for a game lacking freeform sandbox play, the choices you'll have to make will outclass any stretch of 'freedom' you enjoyed in Oblivion or Fallout 3.

Imagine playing Fable and you had two guards accompanying you, like you do in certain missions. But there's a button you could press that would cycle control over to the guards, so now you're running around as him. You can cycle through all the characters this way and give orders to them. You don't have to pause the game, but sometimes it's helpful to because there's a LOT of things you can tell each person to do. I'm going to find a link to that Giant Bomb video I recommended earlier, because I don't think you watched it like I suggested. :3

There's the link. It's about twenty minutes long and shows off the combat. Keep in mind the controls will be a tad different if you're playing it on the console instead of a PC, but the game itself remains the same.

I did watch the vid thanks and all the comments are really helpful. The openworldness isn't the issue, it's more the control setup I wasn't understanding. Final thing to put this discussion to bed:

Assuming I'm controlling 1 person and the AI is controlling the rest of the party, and I'm moving my person around as you do with the left stick and camera control with the right stick. Am I able to press a button to make my character attack someone or make my character defend himself with a shield or whatever?

Really grateful for your help. Thx.

Your character will automatically defend himself from attack.

As for attacking, you'll choose which enemy you want him to attack and he'll attack. The only time you'll actually need to press a button each time you want to attack is in the case of special attacks.

Saying this plays like an RTS is very misleading in my opinion. it's much more like an MMO like WoW, but instead of playing just one, you play the whole party. I think this is far more accurate for describing the actual feel of the battle engine.

Combat overall is strategic. My understanding is it's similar to KOTOR, where once you click on an enemy, your character will continue to attack them as fast as they can unless you switch targets, the enemy dies, you fall unconscious, or you change tactics. So not a whole of clicking at all.

If you want to use a special ability, special attack, or spell, you'll need to select that. Some special attacks, particularly melee ones, and certain abilities (like the bard abilities) just need to be triggered and then work passively until you deselect them or you run out of stamina. Others need to be triggered each time (many archery talents and spells).

Also, remember you control your whole party potentially. You can just have them go on autopilot, or you can "shift focus" to a companion for awhile and let your main character be controlled by the computer. I'd highly recommend doing this if you're playing a warrior while you have a spellcaster in the party, for example - spellcasters generally need a lot more active control.

Also, the game allows you to set up AI scripts (like if your HP goes under X amount, use a potion, etc). Each character gets one script per level, IIRC, and you can use skill points in combat tactics to unlock additional ones. So you can make the AI of your party better with time.

I'm pretty sure that Bioware have ruled out the possibility of a demo.

In all of the videos I've seen demonstrating combat in this game, it seems like foes will start attacking you right away. Does anyone know if there will at least be an option to toggle where as soon as an enemy targets you, the game pauses (like in KOTOR)?
