Was just playing an U/U/G match and a guy selected the volus engineer. I instantly told him I thought we'd be getting along nicely as I was going to be using my Shadow and my shields are very low (full damage spec). He proceeded to bring a GPS and informed me half way through he had no points in shield boost (he was level 20).

Is it just me, or did he miss the point of the class? He finished with 16,000 points with a failure on a wave 10 hack cause nobody had the shields to stay alive.

IDK, I just felt as though he was dead weight considering the main purpose is support and he tried to be a killer. Didn't work out and I don't enjoy losing.

There are people in the forums saying not to spec for SB.

Personally I think that's madness. Best thing the Volus are good for is as medics. Don't need to max out fitness with them, what with Cloak and SB.

The thing is, he probably could have gotten more kills if he was able to stay alive longer and tank enemies. Skipping Shield Boost is dumb.

It's a new concept, people just can't seem to wrap their head around the idea of not being the best killer, but rather making sure everyone else is.

Volus in your lobby = 95% chance a 15 revive medal will be achieved by1 other teammate. Their best skill is shield boost so why people wouldn't spec into that is beyond me the cooldown on recon mine is long too so playing offense isn't what they should be doing.

and when using a weapon as heavy as the GPS or worse your cooldown is wretched!

SB is a good skill. I hope teammates appreciate it. It's very useful especially in escorting and hacking missions.

That's like telling a Novaguard not to spec into Nova.

Why put aside the best support power to top the scoreboards?

When I'm not dominating, I don't mean to brag, I enjoy just helping the team out on the Volus or anything medic/support related. Most of the time it's more fun.

I think until the devs figure out a way to award points (or multiplayer challenger points) for regenerating shields, you're not going to see many PUG's thinking to spec themselves/act as medics.
A lot of people don't like the idea of being a portable shield generator, but it can be very rewarding to play a support character.

Most people don't like to play medics. When I play a geth engineer his turret is speced for full offense.

He's a fool you should eat him with some dipping sauce.

I have no problem with a geth being speced for offense. He has the ability to be a weapon and actually get kills with ease. There's a HUGE difference between that and a volus that has no health/shields and is going down consistantly without offering mch firepower in return.

I wonder if I played with a friend of his today. I too played with a Volus Engineer, and only noticed him using Shield Boost ONCE in the whole match. WTF Volus player? You can both score well AND keep your team alive. He kept dropping and after the third time I stopped bothering to revive him.

I just showed my hubby your username.  He said you're awesome >.<

OT: I confess.....  In the first few waves (maybe upto 5 or 6) I play my volus engie offensively.  I rarely use my SB unless MY sheilds are down.  But in my defense, the others run off and do their own thing.  But come wave 6 onwards I am pure medic.  Silver only of course

yeah, I was planning on keeping him alive while he kept me alive. Instead I left him to die alone. You don't help me, I won't help you. Easy as that.

Shield Boost is the ONLY thing that keeps those puff-balls alive!!
Besides, if he scored that low with Recon AND Prox Mines...he wasn't worth bringing along anyway...

It's possible to play the volus engineer as an inferior version of the GI. I've seen a guy score ~100K with one in a gold match. Of course, it dragged down everyone else's score for the sake of his own, but that's what bad teamwork is all about! ;)

Glad I'm not the only one confused by this. If you want to play an offensive character go with demolisher or someone else. Skipping SB is totally gimping yourself and your allies.

He's absolutely fun as a support character but..people never like to play support characters in games. Apparently it's not fun because they're not doing the killing.

I played one Gold Hydra Reapers match today with a Volus who also seemed to have skipped shield boost. He quit around wave 6 and the game became much easier.

I did a match with the Volus I had the 3 orbs spinning around me and I just spammed shield boost when we were surrounded by 3 Geth primes. No one fell and we won it was pretty fun. I got no EXP but I am level 20 anyways so it does not matter.

See this kinda annoys me, volus probably has some of the best survivability tools but it takes a few rounds of playing to understand them.  Cloak at whim, a defencive shield that instantly recharges a sliver of shileds/barriers when you activate it restoring shield gate, and a power that restores sheilds.  Should not be dieing to anything.

Hell just turning on cloak every 3 seconds can prevent most all deaths (there by making a team mate die instead..:3)

Praetorian excluded, new banshee hands if you ask me.

I play like this too.

With a tool like Recon mine, it's hard to resist the temptation to do damage here and there. But the key is to realize when you should be doing damage vs spamming SB.

Not using SB during escorts or hacks... Yeah, inexcusable!

I confess I've contributed to some revive medals myself.  It is throwing me off, learning to survive using soft cover in between defensive cool downs.
