We all know the galaxy is large and when i first played ME I was pretty intrested in what Barla Von said about how there were dozens of species in citadel space and how Terminus system was filled with their own collection of minor species. Yet in the games we see only so few of these, the most common ones are there of course but where are the rest?
Heres something I cooked up, what might be out there in the galaxy, something we might yet discover, cause the galaxy is huge and Shepard only sees such a small part of it.
If you have any, you can follow my lead here. Lets make some races and add to the universe of Mass Effect!!
Sorry if I make mistakes in english, its not my native language.
These are based on Barla Vons speech in ME1: "80 % of all known intelligent species in the known galaxy recognize the Citadels authority in interstellar matters, but only the most powerful and influental species have embassies here on the presidium. This place is reserved for the elite, Shepard, people like us."
List of species in the uncanon ME verse in alphabetical order circa 2185, added by yours truly(note that the list doesnt include pre spaceflight civilizations like Yahg, and Leviathans):

Heres how theyre presented:
Name: The name of the species
Official Name: The name of the governmental body that leads their people in galactic matters, to the humans this would be the Systems Alliance.
Homeworld: Name of the species homeworld, their home system and the star cluster they reside in. To humans this would be Earth, Sol System, Local Cluster.
Appearance: How the species looks and some miscellanious biological info on what they eat, how long they live etc.
Society: Short history of the species and a look into their society and manners.
Affiliation: Usually either Citadel aligned species or Terminus Systems race. Also has information about where they live in the galaxy.
Military: Describes the forces the species uses to defend itself. Also mentions any conflicts or special forces they might have.
So lets start
Couple of Citadel races from the top of my head, I might add Terminus system races later...
The Shekhmu
Official name: Shekhmu Dynasties
Homeworld: Zharsun, Khalima System, Baset Nebula
Appearance: Alien felinoids. Bipedal, resemble terran felines, like pumas or lynxes, but also have some similarities with other terran mammals, such as porcupines or hedgehogs. Despite them being classified as feline species, the Shekhmu ancestry shows they evolved from a feline being not seen on Earth or any other known world, one that evolved bipedalism and grasping hands early during its evolution more similar to that of simian beings than felines. Their non sapient cousin species, Khahnur, a zharsunian "tree cat" also demonstrates this peculiar evolution.
The Shekhmu have a soft fur coat thats coloring ranges from black to fiery red, it also has many patterns on it. Their ears are more like humans ears rather than cat ears, on the side of their heads and shaped a bit like maple leafs. Males have a mane of sharp quills that run along their head and spine to the tip of their tails. Females also have the spine quills but lack the mane. They are carnivorous hunters and prefer to eat meat and fish, only using plants as spices. Their lifespan is comparable to that of humans and turians.
Society:
Shekhmu society is split between the sexes. The shekhmu are native to an Earth like world of jungles, mountains, deserts and plains called Zharsun. Zharsun is also a world filled with dangerous and deadly predators, which the shekhmu have had to deal with on a daily basis in their prehistory. Thus even before their rise to sapience, the stronger and more aggressive males were the hunters, warriors and protectors of the shekhmu packs as the females were left to take care of the cubs and build lair’s and eventually towns. This constituted into two very different personalities and world views for the males and females.
Originally when the males were still in charge of their civilization the shekhmu were very warlike and their planet was in a constant state of tribal warfare. Dynasties and warlords constantly rose, fought for dominance and were toppled by others. The invention of gunpowder just made these wars among the male dominated dynasties more brutal and damaging. Females were not treated with much dignity by the male warlords or nobles, usually becoming subservient servants or possessions to be used and traded as the males deemed fit.
However since the series of great wars that wiped out most of the participating males and their dynasties, the surviving numerous females finally took over, forced their rule over the males and this had a pacifying effect on their culture. Without this transition it is likely that the shekhmu would have eventually destroyed themselves, and after some time even the males saw the wisdom for this change. This change enabled them to recover, discover prothean tech inside their solar system and become a space faring culture.Shekhmu scout ships were discovered by the asari in 1798 CE exiting a mass relay near their home cluster and after peaceful first contact they became under citadels wing. In the following 110 years they gained an embassy.
Females now outnumber males by 7 to 1 and they lead the civilizations with huge dynasties. Males are not treated as lower class citizens but as equals, and they are presented with the same career opportunities, tough they are usually seen in military, guard, weapon manufacturing and bounty hunting professions where they find themselves most comfortable, while females run the administrative professions, diplomacy and science.
Families and houses are very important in shekhmu society. A royal dynasty is the strong basic pillar around which all other families gather. Good relations and strong alliances are frequently woven and kept with other families. Families with more influence look after the lesser influenced families who in turn take care of those beneath them and so on. Most shekhmu are also employed through these relations and thus unemployment tends to remain rather low, however there are still those who are left behind. Particularly those without families of note and orphans are on the bottom of this social pyramid and usually suffer from poor conditions as they rarely get to advance in shekhmu society.
Arranged marriages were commonly used among the different families and some dynasties still cling to this tradition, but many have left it behind and now let their offspring choose freely whom they wish to marry. Since shekhmu males are still lower in numbers, polygamous marriages with one male and several females are not uncommon and it depends on the females if they wish this. Mostly wealthy, noble or otherwise respected males tend to have polygamous relationships with several females tough.
The shekhmu are presently famous throughout Citadel space as consummate artists, whether its modern art or unique artifacts from the fallen dynasties or dramatic theatrical plays of the past shekhmu wars, many asari, humans and turians in particular buy these services from the shekhmu.
Shekhmu tend to speak with an accent that resembles Terran mediterranean or arabic accents.
Affiliation: Citadel. Have an Embassy. Kheopis, Daramhet and Nehrufiti are the current leading dynasties and thus they make most of the decisions regarding the Shekhmu as a whole. Dozens of colony worlds and expanding. Since their becoming a citadel race, the terratories and influence of the shekhmu have been steadily growing and it is rumored that they will soon have a chance to fill a spot on the council. Their region of space borders the asari, turian and hanar regions.
Military: Have a steady war fleet with at least 3 dreadnoughts and lots of scout ships suiting their curious nature. Some terratorial issues with the turians and hanar. Even tough their armies are not yet as strong as those of the council races, you should never underestimate the shekhmu in battle, the males especially as they are fierce and intelligent warriors that are well versed in using both firearms and advanced claw like blade weapons in close combat. Females act mostly as snipers, adepts and engineers. The Shekhmu have an elite group of male and female warriors called the "Fangs of Zharsun", that are comparable to Turian Black Watch, Asari Commandos or Human N7s.
The Moluvir
Official name: Moluvir Combine
Homeworld: Maluvoloi, Neluvamu System, Elysian Haven
Appearance: Huge caterpillar like beings. They have multiple eyes, 4 small tentacle like "arms" that they use to manipulate objects, which they can also do with their wriggling mouths. They are also very colorful and can blend to their home planets nature like chameleons. Like Earth caterpillars, they are herbivores and like to eat plants and leaves mostly.
The Moluvir can weave things with a strong silk like substance that comes from their mouths, which can also be useful in construction, but they dont evolve into butterfly like things and stay as worms. They do go on with 3 stages of evolution in their lives within a cocoon, that of a larva, adult and elder, each time transforming into bigger worms. Elder worms can be over 10 meters long, with adult being half of that, and children/larvae being only 1.5 meters.
Society: Very peaceful and friendly, with multitude of social rules, cues and rituals that can be downright confusing to other species. Rival hanar in politeness. Culture also seems to be run by political correctness. They are led by a council of wise elder worms, called "destiny weavers". They have only recently discovered interstellar travel, and were found by chance by a salarian scout team. Since then the moluvir sponsored by the salarians have become known to the Citadel space and are well on their way of intergrating into the larger galactic community.
Affiliation: Under Citadels wing, dont have an embassy yet, very recently discovered species. They were discovered on the border of salarian and human space meaning there might be terratorial issues in the future with some borders drawn again.
Military: Minimal, The moluvir have never known true war on their world and thus are unfamiliar with the concept of armies. However since the galaxy can be a cruel and unforgiving place, this will likely force them to change their views somewhat. Theres rumors that they might become a client race under humans, trading their construction skills and resources for protection.
