The Velix

Official name: The Democracy of Metoya

Homeplanet: Omomo – A garden planet. 35% of the planet is covered by water.

This race have not yet been discovered by any intergalactic society or found any reaper technology.

Appearance: The Velix is very similar to Caucasian humans. Except the Velix have no hair on top of the head. Instead they have horns all around the top of the head giving the impression of a crown. Imagine something similar to
this:
i.istockimg.com/file_thumbview_approve/9190864/2/stock-photo-9190864-crown.jpg
Meaning they have no horns in the middle, but only horns all around the side. The number of horns varies from Velix to Velix. The male's horns is typically 10 cm long and the female's about 5 cm. This varies as well from Velix to Velix.

When a Velix has grown up, it is the same size as an average human. But the Velix don't show age the same way as humans do. The horns is the easiest way to narrow down the age of the Velix.

The Velix is born without horns, but as they grow up the horns will come out and form the iconic crown atop of their heads. The females crown start out as yellow, and as they age, it will slowly become orange, and from there slowly turn into a dark red as they move toward the end of their lifespan.

The male Velix horn will grow out in a light lilac color, and as the male ages the crown will turn blue, and from there grow darker and darker until it turns completely black.

The average Velix lives until the age of 90.

Religion and history: The Velix is a highly religious race. The Velix worship Metoya - a male Velix that lived among the Velix, and possessed godly powers.

In the early years of Metoya's life he wasn't seen as a god by all. He wasn't even known by all. So he traveled the planet of Omomo, and when arriving at a society or tribe that didn't worship him, he would challenge their current god (or gods) to a fight to the death. Cave drawings show Metoya pulling the other gods out of thin air, and tearing them limb from limb with his bare hands in front of everyone to see. Such maneuvers resulted in people starting to worship Metoya instead of their now killed god(s).

Newly discovered cave drawings found deep underground the Banvara desert, tell the story of Metoya arriving at a tribe that worshiped the sun. Metoya waited until midnight, and then he pulled the sun out of thin air, resulting in a huge explosion that left the entire region in ashes. But as always - Metoya won. Instead of the old sun Metoya created a new, larger and brighter sun to shine on Omomo.

When Metoya's horn had turned black, meaning the end of his life should be near, he simply kept on living. The tip of his horns began to turn yellow, then orange and eventually a dark red. Metoya ended up living 5000 years.

At first Metoya ruled Omomo as a tyrant. But when he deemed the Velix ready, he established a democracy - “The Democracy of Metoya”. Now it was up to the Velix to rule over themselves.

When the Velix eventually landed on the three moons orbiting Omomo, Metoya was there to greed them welcome. Metoya helped the Velix settle and establish themselves on the nearby moons.

When this was done, Metoya decided his time was over. Instead of simply dieing Metoya transformed himself into crystal like dust. That dust is now kept in a see-through jar in the middle of Jogdine Temple (the temple of the first god Metoya killed). The temple is only lit by a single sunbeam from a narrow opening in the roof. At noon every day the sunbeam will shine on Metoya's dust, resulting in a unexplainable reflection of light that bathes the entire temple in a soothing bright light from inside out. Some Velix have claimed that they can hear Metoya whisper to them during this event.

Before Metoya died, he spoke of his second coming. When the time is right the dust will shine by it's own will. When that happens the jar containing the dust is to be brought to the top of the Ikaru Mountain, where it is to be
shattered between hands. Then Metoya will emerge one more time.

Lhamannu

Tall humanoids mammals that resemble something between a camel and a giraffe. They have long elongated necks and hands. Their society is a collection of peaceful tribal states. The Lhamannu are intrested in old galactic history and cultures, which makes them sort of collectors and appreciators of art.

Lurixese

Tall aliens that evolved form aquatic mammals on their chilly homeworld. To the humans they resemble huge sea otters, except there are many differences. The lurixese have long dexterous hands for grasping things and 2 pairs of expandable small "fin" like appendages that they use to swim around very fast. They have a representative democracy. The Lurixese are known scholars and studiers of marine environments and biology and are famous of their many schools and universities that have an oustanding reputation in the galactic society.

Nathrali

Hulking, brown semi-reptilian humanoid beings from a highly radioactive desert world. Nathrali dont have a head and their big eyes and mouth are situated where human chest would be. Beside their mouth they have another pair of small hands. Nathrali live in a conservative society of clans and roaming bands. They have not settled on many new worlds, preferring their own home.

Ozmar

Ozmar are small, land dwelling sea creatures that resemble a mix between a squid, a crab and a seashell. They have multiple legs and claws and tentacles for grasping things. They live in exquisite cities build almost seamlessly atop the huge coral reefs of their homeworld. They are a curious species of explorers and like to travel the galaxy in small family units.

Pelomisians

Pelomisians are a mystical, superstitious warrior race of humanoid avians, that reseble something between peacocks and owls. They are very colorful and humans find them quite beatiful. They voluntarily became a turian client race, after the turians made first contact with them, claiming the turians arrival was foretold by their prophets. The turians impressed much of the pelomisian people and culture and to this date they view the turians with awe and reverance. Pelomisians are fully intergrated within the hierarchy.

Rhynik

Ursine aliens from a cold world with fjords and vast forests. They are covered with hard plates and thick fur. They have 4 large horns on their head. Rhynik are as big as the krogan and match their strenght and endurance, tough they dont breed nearly as fast. Their culture is a rather conservative geriatocracy. They are sometimes hired as guards around Citadel space. Rhynik expansion into space has been slow and shows no signs of changing.

S'huna

S'huna are an octopus like race from a low gravity world. Their central body has gas bags which they can use to float around in their natural environment. In normal gravity this requires tech help. S'huna goverment is an united monarchy. S'huna are technologically adept and they trade ideas and material with the salarian union, who first discovered them.

Tha'meeki

Tha'meeki are a bipedal race of marsupials, that resemble something between a terran fennec fox and a meerkat, only much larger. They have excellent senses for spotting predators but they are also good at reading other beings emotions and motivations. This makes them rather good negotiators and merchants. Their society is ruled by benevolent corporations that take care of their citizens. Every born Tha'meeki is enlisted into one of these corporations for life, which in turn takes care of them in exchange for work.

Way too many bipeds that are simply human + X and are a racist stereotype, like rats that are scavengers, or boars that are vicious war-fighters, etc. Look at the Yagh - they're prime predators, but they are also a highly intelligent and adaptable species. They aren't brutes just because they physically dominate the other races.

I like some of these suggestions, like a smaller alien that operates a mobile suit to interact with the Council races, and the Observers that silicon-based life. Mass Effect fields allow for life that operated in substantially different environments to exist alongside the other races.

Oh yeah, there's also a notable lack of biotics in this thread. I'm surprised nobody has said something about a powerful biotic race that is physically weak, since Mass Effect fields have made physical labor trivial. I mean really, why would you need to have muscles if you can lift boxes and crates with your mind? I mean, I suppose it is an "obvious" addition, but then so is just mixing an animal with a human, and then saying their society revolves around a specific trait that we observe in Earth animals.

^  Non-Bipedal Biotics you say?

The Semtari

Homeworld
: Semtar

Formal Name: Semtari Planetary Empire

Appearance: The Semtari are a quadrupedal race of great similarity to the Elcor. Notable differences however are that the Semtari have hair on their legs and head, as well as a hinged jaw (think Elites from Halo). Their skin colors are varying shades of dark green.

History: Semtari history is dominated by eezo. Semtar is a high gravity world, over four times as intense as Earth's. It has abundant natural resources but with such high gravity, no species has developed the necessary opposable appendages to take advantage of them.

However, around 120,000 years ago, that changed with the advent of the modern Semtari. The semtari remained quadrupedal, but their feet had rudimentary opposable thumbs. This did not due much for most Semtari, as they could not lift their legs high or long enough to do much thanks to the planet's gravity, and thus most remained foraging tribes much like the rest of the Semtar wildlife. The exception to this were the residents of the island continent of Siritam. As it so happened, Siritam had enormous eezo deposits underneath its soils, and as a result, nearly all newborns to survive childhood became biotics.

With the natural ability to manipulate mass effect fields, the Siritam Semtari could do what most bipedal creatures take for granted, and build tools and eventually modern civilization. With the rise of civilization came the rise of empire, and the Siritam spread and began to conquer the rest of the planet. With biotics, the conquest was rapid, and before long the Siritam were viewed with supernatural awe by the rest of the population.

With biotic power necessary for use of nearly all Siritam technology, biotic mates were highly prized and sought after. Over the course of thousands of years, such breeding preference eventually resulted in an all biotic population.

Religion and Government: The Semtari religion divides their history into three ages, the Age of Heroes, the Dark Age and the Modern Age. The Age of Heroes started near the dawn of Semtari intelligence, when the gods, known as the "many jawed" still walked the earth. Ancient lore tells of great cities and civilizations on the continent of Siritam, where the many jawed looked after ancient Semtari and they thrived.

The Dark Age began when the sky gods grew jealous of the many jawed, and opened up the heavens to smite their civilization. Without the many jawed's guidance, the Semtari that were sparred descended into ninety millennia of barbarism and savagery, only to regain civilization at with the rise of the modern Siritam empire.

The current world government seeks to replicate the great civilization of the old gods, when the gods took care of the week and ignorant Semtari. This has resulted in an incredibly powerful centralized government based on Siritam that controls the entire planet. This empire remains resilient because most of the planets energy is derived from eezo, and all the eezo supplies are located on the island continent.

The Semtari were first discovered by the Quarians 400 years ago after early Semtari spacecraft passed into a relay into Quarian space. Afterwards the council quickly moved to assess their readiness to join the galactic community. Quarian archeologists were fascinated with the Semtari religion, as ancient ruins and cave drawings of the old gods looked, in the words of one of the observers "like a bald tentacled Quarian". Speculation on these finds was ignited once again when humanity entered the galactic scene thirty years ago, as this new race looked even more similar to the ruins, despite the lack of face tentacles.

It wasn't until the discovery of Ilos that the truth would be revealed. The old gods of Simtari lore were actually IInusannon. This and the discovery of ancient high tech ruins led Citadel scientist to conclude that Semtar was once the sight of an Inusannon eezo mining operation, and that the apocalypse that ushered in the dark age was really an orbital bombardment by some unknown force. Speculation remains as to whom fired upon the Inusannon colony.

The reason why theres so many humanoids or bipedal creatures is because the Revelation novel says most life in the galaxy is in humanoid form, aliens like hanar are the exception not the rule. Also these aliens are not simple earth animals in sapient form, anymore than turians are bipedal birds, salarians are frogs or krogan are turtles, or quarians are purple humans. Theres simply a resemblance, it also makes describing them alot easier to me since english isnt my natiive language and, so far, there arent any drawings. Also, theres a scientific explanation to this, Its called convergent evolution, which is why you see similar looking lifeforms on worlds that may be hundred of lightyears apart. Humanoid form is very good for a sapient being, it can do many things, and in ME universe evolution seems to favor this form.

And seriously, we already have blue women and palm trees on worlds that are on the other side of the galaxy, so why complain now?

And ME races are certain stereotypes too, like Asari are sexsymbols and the Krogan are mostly brutes, or vorcha are vermin. Each species have its individuals of course and many cultures and languages. Its hard to deviate from planet of hats sometimes.

Also id like to mention, there are biotics among these species, but none can match the asari.

I made a species of biotic mercury-based liquid lifeforms that have a community in the form of singing oceans, if that counts.

Ulcyn

Ulcyn are a rather unique species of sapient gas like organisms from a gas giant that has a range of thick but habitable atmosphere for a certain type of life to develop in there. To the humans they resemble blue thick patches of clouds. Their unusual biology makes them unable to leave their home and they are unfortunately trapped in their home and have found no way to leave the planet. They are also hard to communicate with since the ulcyn lack concepts familiar to most other species. The asari who discovered them by chance have installed communication satellites to their orbit so other species can talk to the ulcyn, but other than scientific intrest and curiosity, the ulcyn dont really have much to offer for galactic society. If there is a way to get ulcyn to other planets safely, it is still in the state of being discovered.

Zovinn

The zovinn are a three gendered species of yellow, rough skinned, big eyed humanoid beings from a strange world of huge plants, where all life is symbiotic with the plants. Their society is a mix of different clans that sometimes join together to form bigger clans and compete with rival clans. Zovinn are known as being skilled healers and botanists, and their knowledge into medicine and herbs to cure all kinds of species has gained them favor in the galactic community. Their unique environment makes their immunity systems rather fragile tough and so they havent really had much success in colonising other worlds. The zovinn are not comfortable in enviro suits, which is another hinderance to this process.

I exausted every Mass Effect race I can think of.

If you're new to this thread and you have nothing to post, please read though the suggestions on the previous four pages. All fantastic ideas here.

If your argument is Bioware can't use ideas that other people have come up with for copyright reasons, you're missing the point. Coming up with ideas just for fun is the point of this thread.

Feel free to comment on any race you like a lot. This thread gets my seal of approval.Image IPB

I'm planning to add six species.

First, the Rak'Thaka

Seph Terax, Cet System, Observant Eye

Appearance: The Rak'Thaka are tall, muscular, black-skinned aliens with wide mouths, exhibiting sharp fangs. They also have dreadlock-like yellow hair, as well as four large horns coming from the sides of the head. Biotics are somewhat common in the species, and they can live for two hundred years.

Society: Despite their looks, the Rak'Thaka aren't a warlike species, being known for their artists. Rak'Thaka musicians, painters and actors are usually excellent. Their government, the Terax Union, is led by a group of Orderkeepers - individuals selected from each Union species to watch and govern over the Union planets. The Rak'Thaka people's taste for art developed after the Pre-Historical War, a worldwide conflict that nearly destroyed them, were it not for the intervention of Nek Adur, the First Orderkeeper. Thanks to Adur, the Rak'Thaka had developed their art and their culture, but also created a powerful army, to protect the cities and to prevent anyone from trying to sow chaos among them. In 20 BCE, a mining operation on Seph Terax's equator revealed a Prothean map that led to the discovery of a scientifical center on Vahras, Seph Terax's largest moon. From there, the Rak'Thaka expanded their influence and found other developed races, inviting them into the Union

Affiliation: Terax Union.

Military: The Rak'Thaka now employ a formidable army and a fleet that can rival, if not best, the Turian fleets. Most mercs, having only heard of Rak'Thaka artists, tend to underestimate a Union Assault Squad, and pay for that mistake with their lives. Female Rak'Thaka, being more flexible than the males, are usually assigned as infiltrators and adepts and Reavers, an elite special-ops unit, with quite exaggerated rumors that a single Reaver could launch the Union's enemies into chaos without firing a shot.

Coming next: The Kortax, the first species to join the Rak'Thaka.

The Raszga

Homeworld:

Margha is extremely flat compared to Earth, mountains do not exist, and it is full of swamps and lush, colorful, illuminating foliage that makes the night brighter than day. In daytime there is little activity. The only carnivores in the whole planet are plants, which are small and weak compared to the Raszga themselves. Margha is in asari space.. Margha has no Prothean ruins. The north and south poles of the planet are both sea. Margha has no plates that cause earthquakes or make the continents move. Its covered in %85 water.

Biology:

The Raszga stand two meters tall, are bipedal and have slim but strong limbs.  Like all species on Margha, they are capable of photosynthesis. The average lifespan of a Raszga is 800 years.Their skin ranges from lavender to maroon and their blood is cyan. They have stubby tails like the Krogan do. They have big almond eyes that glow gold and nose holes. Their jaw is broad like the Krogan. They have long thin ears that come down. (Imagine upside down extremely long and thin elf ears) Males have thin and long tentacle like beards that come under from their chins. Their tongues are forked and they have thousands of small teeth, which they do not tend to show. Their backs have these jellyfish/manta ray like capes that glow gold and orange which they use this to blend in with the rest of the neon foliage of Margha. They have big hands compared to their bodies and have curved but short claws that are excellent for digging. They have hooves and long slim legs that they hide, pulling in their capes. They are extremely agile but patient, graceful but motionless. They breed exactly like the asari, and can transfer knowledge just by skin contact like the Protheans. Their main method of communication is speaking, like us. A normal Raszga is so strong with biotics that a trained asari operative with implants would barely be a match to them.

Society:

They live in great tall tribe cities atop tall trees linked by thousands of root like bridges. Although they practice science and use technology, It is unique and organic. They live in tribes lead by a male chieftain and a female shaman. They are biotic and it has affected their whole technology and tools. Their biotic ability is so amazing that they weave plants like matter and create organic tools and objects. They value life greatly. A Raszga would rather use his/her biotic ability to raise an object rather than pick it up with physical means. They revere their elders and there is no concept of war. They are extremely kind to the few visitors that ever visit Margha, there is no poverty. They travel through long distances of water with gigantic rafts that have plants and animals in them aswell. These raft islands visit all parts of Margha and are merchants and emmisaries.

Standing in the Galaxy:

Their wretched and creepy appearance disgusts many species in daylight, but they are a sight to behold in the dark as they glow. They first made contact with the asari when an asari dreadnaught orbited their planet, by weaving a large dreadnaught sized organic ship that only took 5 earth months to grow. Their unique technology and different lifestyle and enviroment isolates them from the rest of the galaxy, and although the Raszga are aware of the Citadel and the galactic community, few ever visit it. They are completely ignored by reapers and in turn they ignore them and have lived for countless cycles.Only the asari and the salarians are aware of their existance. They have just recently encountered other species tho and probably will not escape from the Reapers wrath this time.

Kortax time!

Venisos, Maaklis System, Piethar Cluster

Appearance: Kortax are found walking in a hunched stature. They have green scales, a small tail and six eyes. Kortax are known for their ability to curl up into a wheel for quick locomotion. They can live for ninety years, and biotics are uncommon.

Society: Kortax of the Maaklis Confederacy live by a caste system. As opposed to what can be seen in most cultures, miners and builders, due to their importance in construction and development, occupy the highest positions, and soldiers (except for the Master General) and engineers are among the lowest ones. In 80 CE, after they developed space flight, they were invited by the Rak'Thaka and formed the Terax Union. The Kortax of the Union do not live under that system. The Confederacy Kortax has territorial issues with the Systems Alliance

Affiliation: Maaklis Confederacy, Terax Union

Military: Very few Kortax fight in the frontlines with heavy weapons, preferring stealthy, surgical strikes over explosive combat. This led the Union to employ Kortax as their infiltrators and assassins. This combat style had an impact on the galaxy's view of the Kortax, seeing most of them as deceiving individuals.
