Like many here, I greatly enjoyed and was deeply satisfied with the way Dragon Age: Origins came out and have continued to play it ever since. However, I feel that, as a series and a continuation of the Dragon Age universe, Dragon Age 2 felt like a disappointment.

While I am excited and relieved that the team is using the Frostbite 2 engine for new graphics, I am concerned about the face models used for returning characters. In my personal opinion, you should not bring back characters who's faces need polishing and 'fix them up later' in a patch or wait for fans to fix them in a mod.

Case in point: Alistair
Image IPB

I know I was one of many fans who was rather upset by his appearance. While I appreciate the team doing their best with the current engine of the time to make Alistair look like his origin counterpart, it just came off as an uncanny valley effect with a character that looks like Alistair but something was amiss.

I would argue that if such situations prove difficult for the team, why not simply 1)exclue the character outright or 2) place them in a voice over situation where the face is hidden but the voice assures us they are helping (for example, perhaps Zevran would be in the shadows and whisper to the Inquisitor his thanks)

This is simply a humble suggestion.

I understand your point.

But I think the ideas that you suggested are bad:

1) developers should not compromise the story, if that character must appear, it has to appear.

2) is just not a good idea, it would be very awkward to deal with characters we know but we can not see their face.

I'd rather deal with a bit different characters.

I liked Alistair's cameo. Admittedly, he looked really off, but once I got past that it was actually quite nice. It helps that there's no retcon like "Oh yeah, you executed him but he became king anyway. Using magic."

The other cameos were meh. I found it harder to get past Zevran's face. But if he'd been in the shadows the whole time, it would've been equally weird.

I kind of wish they would take advantage of the years that have passed and actually revamp the looks altogether. If Leliana appears in DA3, I don't want her to look the same as in DA:O (and DA2). She should age and most likely change her haircut too.

The problem with the returning characters in DA2 was that the designers tried to make them look identical with DA:O even though the graphical style had changed. That was a mission impossible and it becomes glaringly obvious when the looks don't match.

The solution would have been to make the characters look intentionally somewhat different from DA:O (e.g. give Alistair a beard, a proper one) while retaining the familiarity. Unfortunately, this wouldn't have worked with Zevran since they completely changed the physical traits of elves.

If DA3 is going to take place few years after DA2, at least DA:O characters should look significantly different. DA2 ones should at least get a slight makeover so comparisons are more difficult to make.

While I want characters to look as much like I remember as possible, I'd rather have them look somewhat different than not have them at all.  And while there are some differences between the DA2 Alistair and DAO one, the screenshots of Alistair in different lightning in DA2 are interesting as he looks much better in some light than in others.

Personally as long as they sound the same i can cope with a little visual discrepancy
