This might have been done elsewhere, probably has but buried deep in the bowels of the forum and I've not found it

I know we've all got friends that we wonder how and why we're friends eg I've a friend who worships the ground Thatcher walked on, I do wonder how we manage to have a civil chat sometimes.

So I looked at all the DA companions, from mobile talking rocks to kittens, and wondered who I'd not let near me, who I would tolerate, who I'd avoid (sorry meeting my mum today ....), who would be someone I'd happily walk on the cliffs with, have coffee with, and of course who would give me that extra tingle when I spoke to them.
Came down to:

Sten; er cold or what, and the Qun? no thank you, return from whence you came.
Zev's a problem. Do I want to be friends with a licensed killer? No... but putting that aside, he's fun and flattering. He stays.
Leliana? hmm I do not do religion, her devoutness is not for me. However she seems quite nice and reminds me of some of my actual friends. She stays, but keep sthe nug at home!
Ohgren.. no. In many ways he reminds me of a bi-polar Yankee friend (dead now) and I love that honest funny side of him. But the cleanliness, the serious drinking, the constant belching and need to fight. Sorry Oggy I'm out today .
Morrigan .. not a friend type person, and sooo needy. For my own health she's a no no too.
Wynne? A friend but one I'm out a lot for, she's too judgemental and bossy, had enough of that at school thanks.
Shale; impractical, she's never through the door of my local bistro, and I do hate being called it.

Alistair, well he'd be my husband. especially considering he has so many traits of the man I really married.

From Awakening I like Nathaniel, he's a shoe in. Sigrun and her laugh make me smile, and her teasing of Justice is fun. She's in too. Velanna, good grief NO! Justice? well er not for choice

Merril; Blood magic would be a barrier as would her demon, other than that I like her, she can come over for cake.
Varric; annoyed me. Has nothing going for him that I can see, so probably a friend!
Isabela; a friend that would come and go, better known to me as Siobhan .....
Fenris; friend. sexy and anti slavery cause is just, but he might not like my pro mage politics. he'd need to clean his house before I came over though, 6 year old rotting corpses have a smell I don't think I could get used to.
Sebastian; pretty and that accent swoon, but he can bugger off, not having him near me
Aveline; likeable, a bit too law abiding even if the laws are wrong, that's something I really have trouble with. friend
Bethany or Carver? Neither until they got through their sulky at Hawke period. Then who knows, Bethany seems likeable.
Hawke(f) reminds me of girls at my school who should have been head girl, probably nice now that I'm an adult but I have an inbuilt prejudice against head girls!
Hawke(m) friend. I can see us enjoying the same politics, having a good meal out, enjoying the local views, and going for long walks on the beach with the Keano the mabari.
Anders would be a close friend of course, and if I'd never met Alistair.... but I'm the wrong gender (all his wanting a wife in Awakening reminds me of gays who aren't out to their boss and parents, seen it so often). His passion for his cause would lead me astray though. I'd probaly be helping his undeground unit. He could have Pouncy back, and I've never met a cat I couldn't get on with

-----------------------------

I should probably edit this for clarity, but it's been a loooooooooooooooooong irritating day

Friends.  One of the biggest attractions for friend for me is someone who is affable, friendly and funny.  But also some friends push me and make me a better person.  But I always remember, to surround myself with people who 'lift you up' not 'drag you down'.
So my list would be:

Alistair, sweet, friendly, funny and sexy.  A lethal combination for me, and my favorite companion in both games.  Also remarkably loyal in that he can completely hate your guts, but as long as you're fighting the Blight, he's in it for the long haul.  *unless you cross that one line he can't accept*.  Hey, it only adds to his characterization imo and my wardens agree that the old general is a liability, and has to pay for his crimes.  Like OP, he would be, not just a friend but a husband as well, one I wouldn't shove out of bed for eating popcorn, but he'd have to use the dustbuster to clean up his own mess.

Zevran.  I don't have any real life killer friends, esp killer for hire.  But he's personable, funny and handy to have in a fight.  He'd be my shopping buddy, someone who may be blunt at times, but always tells me the truth.  A keeper.

Leliana.  Nice and non-confrontational unless you push her buttons.  I grew up around (nice) religious people so she'd have a warm, comforting familiarity about her.  A keeper.

Wynne...kind of on the fence with this one.  She'd be a friend, but the kind you'd meet for coffee once a week who tells you what you're wearing is too young on you or that hairstyle doesn't suit you.  Not looking for another mom.  A keeper...but only in a 'once in a while' kind of way.

Oghren not just no but HELL NO!  Always drunk and crude, rude...no.  If he were someone I knew, it would be someone I avoid as much as possible.  Dropped like a hot potato--unless he dries out and I get to see an actual nice guy under all that pickling.  Not likely to happen.

Sten.  Not going into a long explanation, not much of a conversationalist and always aggravating to me, even in game.  Again another 'dropped like a hot potato' here.

Morrigan.  While a fascinating character I throughly enjoy in a game, umm no to 'real life'.  Dropped like a hot potato.

Dog.  Come on, he's the family pet, goes without saying.  A keeper, bad B.O. and everything.

DA2's crew:

Varric, funny, friendly, personable, always something to say about every situation, and usually does it in such a way its never taken poorly.  Good at defusing bad situations (he'd be my guy to talk troopers out of giving me a ticket)Image IPB.  Great storyteller so he always has something interesting to say as well.  A keeper.

Aveline.  The big sister I never got to have.  I'd trust a friend like that to walk into the very gates of hell with me and have my back.  A keeper.

Merrill, annoying and a bit childish but sweet natured and kind hearted (despite the whole demon/blood magic thing).  She's the sort of friend you always have to bail out of trouble, but you don't mind so much because she means well.  A keeper.

Fenris--anger issues much?  A hair trigger temper and what appears to be a drinking problem (is drinking on at least 2 visits to his mansion).  Also an utter slob.  Really, Fen, in 6 years you never once swept the mansion or dusted or...you know, cleaned up the blood?  Or picked up the books lying on the floor?  If he was a friend, he'd be one I kept at arm's length as well...preferably behind plate glass, otherwise, dropped like a hot potato.

Anders.  Creepy, ugly stalker fanatic dude who carries an unrequited torch for me for years?  Umm no.  I'd try to run away first, but if not feasible I may invest in an electrified fence and 24 hour security to surround my home.  Dropped like a hot potato.

Isabela.  A friend I'd worry about in this day and age when drinking and sex can lead to lethal consequences.  Besides that, she has a good heart and is funny and friendly.  Besides, she can sail...and I love fishing, the sea and boats, so she's a keeper, esp if she comes with her own boat.

Bethany/Carver.  I love both characters, Carver has a slight edge since I grew up with brothers and had rather stormy relationships with them (kind of like the rivalry with Carver).  Carver would be the kind of friend who tests me, Bethany the one who you love regardless of what she says or does since she is so sweet and means well.  Keepers.

Sebastian.  Wishywashy and me don't mix well.  He'd be someone I knew from church, an aquaintance I neither like nor dislike strongly.  Cute but in the end, looks can only carry you so far if there's no substance behind it.  Neither a 'keeper' or a 'hot potato'.

Awakenings

Nathaniel.  Practical, interesting, well spoken with just a slight bad boy air that would be exciting too.  He'd be the kind of buddy I'd get into trouble with and end up in jail, then he gets me out of it.  A keeper.

Anders (a very different one from the one in DA2).  Friendly, personable, free spirit who refuses to be caged.  Loves cats.  A keeper.

Sigrun.  Most cheerful, friendly corpse I ever met.  A keeper.

Justice.  Ummm no.  I'd probably keep him around to help him adjust to human society, but otherwise wouldn't consider him 'a friend', more a student.  Neither  a 'keeper' or a 'hot potato'.

Velanna--again, anger issues much?  **** gets a 'warm and fuzzy feeling' slaughtering innocent people.  Dropped like a hot potato.

Ogrhen.  Drinking worsens in Awakenings...making him even less desireable to me as a friend.  Dropped like a hot potato.

My hope/dream list for DA3 is we get companions just eccentric enough to be interesting, but not completely batsh*t insane.

my man and I were like Anders and Hawke, fancied each other rotten but daftly thought the other wasn't interested. It was odd how we always had each other around though... turned out to be the happiest of relationships (36 years and counting, oh maker I am so old) and no stalking involved :-)

Interesting topic... I guess I'll just go down the list.

Sten- I love Sten in the game, and the Qunari as a whole, but any member of a group that's into extremes (see mage Qunari), is not for me.
Zev- Definitely. He's funny and likes to have a good time. Plus he's dependable if you've earned your loyalty.
Leliana- She's nice, so definitely, but she'd be kind of a back up "filler" friend (which I know sounds mean but sometimes you have to make up numbers/etc.) because of her sometimes ridig religious views.
Ohgren- Yes, he's full of ale and good times.
Morrigan- yes, I enjoyed talking to her and truly enjoy her character. She'd be one of those friends that's just as valuable, but probably outside of the general circle of friends. I'd also appreciate it if she didn't look so... gothic.
Wynne-she'd be "ok" but I can't get past the age and the nosy "know-it-all" attitude, especially after the whole "you and Alistair should break up" thing.
Shale- she's funny, sarcastic, etc. Why not?
Alistair- Oh, I'd rope that boy in faster than he could ask, "wait, where's the cheese?"
Nathaniel- Of course! He's a good guy (who got caught in chaos and didn't let it change him too much).
Sigrun-she's great! Why not?
Merril- no.She seems too needy and kind of a loner already.
Varric- he's witty and lovable. The kind of friend that is just as likely to get in trouble with you as he is to get you out of it.
Isabela- not sure if it's something that should be said, but some of my friends share... her personality. So yeah, probably.
Fenris- it would be hard, tbh. He'd be that hipster guy with the dark past... I don't get along with broody/emo people IRL.
Sebastian; Unless he didn't try to convert me and respected my views, no. His accent and looks I'd adore, but he's far too religious for my liking.
Aveline- yes, because I'll always need a friend to keep me grounded. Plus she seems like she'd give good advice (I really liked the whole thing she said about "turning the page," it was touching).
Bethany or Carver- Both yes, since I would know them as more than Hawke's little brother. I love their personalities, tbh.
Hawkef/m- Definite yes. A go to friend for all my fun/adventuring needs.
Anders- Awakenings Anders, yes. Fun, easy going, etc. Anders+Justice=Definitely never.

I hope tomorrow's a better day for you, OP.
:D

Alistair: I'd probably keep him a an acquantance level, I don't think I would get along with him all that well even though he is terribly adorable...

Dog: I'd love to have a Mabari Hound :D

Leliana: Sure she has her own quirks and she is a bit religious, so long as she keeps her preachings to herself I'd have no problem with being a friend of hers.

Morrigan: I think I'm on the fence with her, not sure if we would get along or not.  Probably not because I'd bore her.

Oghren: I do like his humour quite a bit, his constant drunken stupour could get in the way of things and make things complicated but I'd probably get along with him.

Shale: I like Shale, I'd probably get along great with her.

Sten: I think being friends to him is something that's more of a quiet relationship, a person to have a cup of tea with you know?  I already have a lot of respect for him as a character and he's easily my favourite character in DAO.

Wynne: I like wynne but she can be too overbearing at times.  She reminds me a bit of the grandmother I never had...

Zevran: I think zevran is misunderstood at best.  He's had a lot more **** happen to him in the past and he merely grows hollow to it.  I'll skip a long rant and say that yeah I'd probably get along with him just fine so long as he doesn't flirt with me...

Loghain: I think I would have gotten along with him but it would have been more of a Frenemy situation...

Anders(from both Awakening and DA2): I doubt I'd get along with him if it were either Anders from either game, He seemed obnoxious to me.  Ther ewas just something about him I didn't like.

Justice: I probably would have liked him but when he merged with Anders I think he lost most of his original self and was tainted by all of Ander's anger so pre-DA2 I liked him.

Mhairi: I wish we would have gotten to know her more, it seemed like a waste of a potentionally strong ally by killing her off so soon...

Nathaniel Howe: Maybe when he mellowed out.

Sigrun: She was my favourite Awakening character so yeah I probably would have gotten along with her, she was witty and strong.  Seems like one of those lady friends most people would appreciate having.

Velanna: She seemed a bit naggy but I think she preferred being alone.

Sketch & Tug: I liked these two, I wouldn't mind being friends with them.

Aveline: I would love to have someone like her around, she helps keep people grounded.  She seems practical and reasonable She may seem harsh on the outside but she's a bit like a big sister on the inside :)

Carver & Bethany Hawke: I probably would have gotten along with either of them just fine.

Fenris: I think once someone gets in his head a little bit and breaks him out of his shell somewhat, I think he's fine.  He's had his own disasters happen and still got through them wouldn't mind having him around.

Isabela: I don't think I would get a long with her all that well...  However, I never really gave her a chance before.  Maybe I should try that out before shunning her.

Merril: While she's rather cute, I think her crazy overwhelms that fact......

Sebastian: While he has a nice accent I doubt I would tolerate all of his preaching.

Varric: While he is a tad annoying I think I would be too boring for him.  Though I do like how he can exaggerate everything but that would get...  Annoying...

Tallis: I would not get along with her at all, she seemed overly confident and full of herself.  Not to mention a little Mary-Sueish, when she isn't trying to show off how "awesome" she is, she's too busy trying to convert everyone else to the Qun even though she herself has a hard time upholding the Qun well at least the little bit of the Qun that has made itself known anyways..

I forgot Loghain, probably because he's so obnoxious he gets beheaded every time I play.

I'd be buddies with Varric, Izzy, Bethany, Aveline, Sketch, Merrill, Sigrun, Shale, Leliana, and Alistair. I like funny, warm-hearted, and easygoing people. Also quirky people.

Funny how a lot of my favorite characters are nowhere on that list. Interesting video game characters don't make the best IRL people.

Alistair: Friend, definitely. He's a bit needy, but has a good heart.

Dog/Barkspawn: Of course I'd want a Mabari, lol. Who'd mess with me if I had a mabari beside me, lol

Leliana: I love Leliana, she'd probably be a best friend, possibly more.

Morrigan: Morrigan is hot, but no, in real life I would not think she'd be a friend. Maybe an acquaintance, but not a close one.

Oghren: No.

Shale: Yes, I like shale, lol, and I'm a really nice person and i think I would accept the challenge of befriending her.

Sten: Yes, Sten would be a good friend, I'd be able to respect the big softy.

* Leliana: I saw what you were doing back there.
* Sten: Oh?
* Leliana: Don't play innocent with me.
* Sten: What are you talking about?
* Leliana: You. Playing with that kitten.
* Sten: ...There was no kitten.
* Leliana: Sten, I saw you. You dangling a piece of twine for it.
* Sten: I was helping it train.
* Leliana: You're a big softie!
* Sten: We will never speak of this again.
* Leliana: Softie!

Wynne: I would respect her, more mentor-like then friend, though.

Zevran: No.

Loghain: I respect him. I suspect that Arl Howe manipulated Loghain with his hatred of Orlais, and convinced Loghain that Cailan was betraying Ferelden. In short, while power certainly appealed to him, I do not believe that it was the primary motivation behind his betrayal

Anders(from both Awakening and DA2): I would be his friend and believe in the pursuit of justice with him, but I would not go along with extreme acts of terror. I'd want to go about it peacefully.

Justice: Same as Anders.

Mhairi: I don't know, didn't get to know her well enough.

Nathaniel Howe: Yes, he's a good person deep down. He'd be a close friend.

Sigrun: She is great too, I think she's be a good friend.

Velanna: Like Anders and Justice, I respect her belief in justice, but not her extreme methods.

Sketch & Tug: This pair from Leliana's past is cool, they'd be decent friends, but not best friends.

Aveline: She'd be a good friend.

Carver & Bethany Hawke: Yes, I'd like them both, though Bethany probably a bit letter.

Fenris: Yes, definitely, I like him a lot.

Isabela: Decent friend, but not best friends

Merril: Merrill would be one of my best friends, she's got a really kind heart and is self-sacrificing.

Sebastian: Definitely one of my best friends if he were real, lol

Varric: Yes, I like him, but not a best friend

Tallis: She's fine, a decent friend and all, but not a best friend.

Top 10 Best Friends:
1: Leliana
2. Dog/Barkspawn
3. Bethany
4. Carver
5. Nathaniel
6: Sebastian
7: Alistair
8. Merrill
9: Aveline
10. Loghain

Unfortunately, I have only played DA2 so far (shame, I know!) but sure, I'll bite:

Merril: She reminds me of a friend I had once- cute and naive, but I don't know if I would trust her. She can visit, but I'd hold her at a distance.

Varric: He's pretty awesome. We probably wouldn't end up being best friends, but he seems like the kind of guy who would come bail you out of jail. And everyone could use one of those. :P

Isabela: I'd totally have her for a best friend. Sure she can be a little reckless, but she's badass! She could be my right-hand woman and occasional "girly fun" partner ;) (Because why not?).

Fenris: I would hope to be friends with Fenris- I really, really like his personality, and I find him really interesting as a character. I get the impression that he would be really honest, which equals trustworthy to me. And I get the feeling that even though he isn't so affectionate, he'd be the type of friend that would be there for life, and that's the kind of friend I want.

Sebastian: NO. "the Maker is good, the Maker is great, all praise the Maker, Maker this, Maker that, blah blah blah blah...". -_-

Aveline: I'm really not sure about Aveline... she's very lawful and moral, which might clash with me. Not to say I'm amoral/immoral- I like to think I have some very strong morals. They're just... probably very different from hers. >.> Apart from that, she seems very trustworthy, so maybe.

Bethany or Carver: Bethany, maybe. She seems really sweet. Carver- NO. I found him to be exceedingly whiny with my FemHawke. All I heard was "Everybody likes, YOU", "I'm only living in YOUR shadow", etc. Perhaps he didn't think that more people would like him if he stopped whining? >.< That's just my opinion, though.

Anders: I admire the whole "radical actions for a cause" thing, but I don't think what he did was the best way to go about it. Not to mention, I am not sure if I would be able to trust him any more than Merrill. Come to think of it, I'd probably trust Merrill more... at least she would think twice about betraying her friends for her cause. I don't get the impression that Anders would do that.

As for the Mabari, I love dogs. =D I love most animals. The Mabari can ALWAYS share my bed. =D

DA:O

Alistair: Oh yes, he's super adorable. He's my little boy scout. Favorite character in DA:O.

Leliana: While I don't buy into all the religious stuff, she would be a good friend and confidant. I'd take her shoe shopping with me.

Morrigan: I like her, though I'm not sure how close we would really be, as it seems if you want to be bffs you'd have to cater to her every whim. It wouldn't be for a lack of trying though.

Sten: Great respect for him, he offers different viewpoints and I would like to have long chats with him about it over cookies and kittens.

Zevran: Oh Zev...where do I even begin. I would love to have him around, I think he would be a confidence booster for me and we share the same dark sense of humor. We'd be buddies.

Wynne: It's like my gran is literally in the game. Kind, great for advice, but her judgement may be a bit too harsh at times.

Oghren: Oh what a riot. Yes, we'd be chums. He's the type of person I could get along with great. Drinking buddies. :D

Shale: Hmmm.....tough call. I like her humor, but a bit too unpredicatble for my taste.

DA: A
Need to replay to decide....

DA2

Varric: Best bros for life. Love his sarcastic, humorous ways. Not to mention his story telling....All around great guy. Love him.

Anders: I knew someone like him once (not all for mage freedom and an abomination of course) and we got on well. All he needs is someone to hear him out and not offer too much judgement. Though his passion will be his downfall. Plus I like cats too. ;)

Fenris: My IRL friends all have dark pasts, so DA2 was very familiar to me. I have a feeling we'd drink too many daquiris and share our sob stories. His honesty would be very endearing to me, and I think he would be there for me if I needed it.

Merrill: She's adorable. I would be very protective of her, and occasionally give her a stern talking to, and then feel horribly guilty for making her upset and would coddle her. It's sad but true.

Isabela: She's sassy.....but too reckless and unpredictable.

Aveline: The older sister I would want. She would keep me on the right path, and would have my back through anything.

Sebastian: I'm a sucker for boy scout characters. He'd be a great confidant and his loyalty shouldn't be questioned. Again, not much for religious stuff but I could overlook it because he's a great guy.

Carver: We would be the type of friends who pick on each other constantly.
