If you want to change, then just start a new game. The only reason to have it in the game is so that the player can troll their party members, and that just seems like a useless feature.

Playing a transsexual character, for example. If done right -- so not just like the Emporium, where nobody reacts to the change -- this could turn out pretty awesome.

If by "awesome" you mean hilarious, and awkward then yes. It would be.

Oh man, that's class. Making fun of trans people.

I agree that having the option to play a trans character would be interesting, but it would be such a HUGE change that your companions would all HAVE to comment and react in some way, and that's a lot of extra dialogue and such to write and create just for this one circumstance.

Kind of gives dual-wielding a new twist.

Thats not why I would find it hilarious(though I knew someone would take it that way).

I think it would be funny based on the reactions of your party/NPC's you've met before the change.

Changing hairstyles, hair colour and tattoos? Fine.

Changing the biological sex of your character? No. Just, no.

Why bother with gender change, when a wholesome amount of cross-dressing will accomplish the exact same social effects?

Especially for Male Mages. All they need to do is shave and put on some makeup. Voila.

Get with the program. Mages haven't worn dresses since DA:O. Well not all of them anyway..

And start the character creation from scratch? Do you know how long it takes to create the perfect chin height?

If you knew, why not word it in a way that wouldn't be interpreted like that? Because it really sounded like you were just making fun of people.

And I don't see why it would have to be funny or awkward. It can be for some characters, but if there's an in universe explanation for it and people react properly to your decision and you can talk about it? It could be really interesting.

Of course, I don't actually see this happen. As said further up, too much extra dialogue for a rare occasion.

I just realised yesterday that Skyrim allows this. If you use console commands to open the character creation interface, you can change your character's gender mid-game.

We have the ability to choose our gender at CC, that is an advantage that not every game has, though happily that does seem to be a growing feature in gaming. There is obviously no need to go back and forth with your gender during the game, if you want to play a character with a different gender, its easy enough to start a new game with the gender of your choice. You can already romance anybody you want, if this were ME3 then gender-changing so that you're allowed to romance who you want to and then gender-change back so you can be with them as your original, preferred gender makes sense, and there's a mod for that. But for the DA2 (and hopefully DA3 as well) system its completely unnecessary.

It's easy to start over, sure, but getting to the bit you want to try out might take many hours of gameplay.

Because it would take so much for them to do it well (and with sensitivity), I'd rather they didn't. The time and money they'd invest would be much better spent on about a thousand better things when you have many games saved and switch between characters of different sexes at any time as is. I somehow don't see a large percentage of people saying, "I really want to play a transgendered person in a universe where they only healing we ever hear about is battle damage and STDs. I'd like to explore the Thedan attitudes toward it."

Edited to clarify that "do it well" means a desire that is consistent from the beginning of the game with a character, rather than a "got drunk and had a mage turn me into a man/woman" joke.  It would require an entire series of conversations exclusive to people who wished to RP that way.
