for a long time i'd never really played rpg's until the release of oblivion. ever since i became an avid fan of rpg's and oblivion kept me interested for over 2 years. prior to that i was into fifa games, first person shooters, platformers, action abit of everything really, my real favourite was real time strategy.
i bought this game on the 26th and completed the final quest yesterday(29th). it took me around 30 hours or just under on normal difficulty.
my first thought when i began the game was 'is this it..........' i found it quite different to oblivion and there is no real tutorial.
however i carried on and loved it, this game is 99% brilliant with only the beginning letting it down because it just throws you straight into it.
however as i said the rest is incredible, the voice acting, cutscenes and general story is fantastic and the best ive ever seen in a game. towards the end of the game il admit i was actually upset that it had ended and the characters are portrayed so well its difficult to not feel for them and in a way feel that you know them.
the combat and tactics system i loved, it had the strategy and setup of a real time strategy game except it was an rpg. best of both.
so i'd give this game a 9.5/10.
however there are flaws, i dont know why but i find it difficult to re-do this game, im currently starting a new origin story but it feels almost a waste.
im used to the oblivion style and i was quite into role playing within the game(being a merchant/assassin/bandit etc), it had so much freedom that you could literally do anything at anytime in that game, there were hundreds of quests and a full play through would easily be 60-80 hours(all quests) even then you wouldn't have everything done and there are expansions.i would say i spent way too much time on that game probably 300 hours at the least.
this game in contrast seems very linear, i have all the downloadable content but i feel compared to oblivion there is little bang for your buck so to say, you get very little and the downloadable content perhaps adds an hour or 2 max with some cool characters.
theres also very limited roleplaying in this game, for example in oblivion i could buy myself a house, and roleplay a rich merchent or assassin or anything really, i could kill anyone and interact with everyone the options were literally limitless. i could ignore every quest and still be the richest guy around and the highest level.
on here its the main story line, you cannot purchase property and there is very little to do outside of the quests, you can't even kill people, your skills level via xp so you must kill generally for xp and to kill you need to do the quests.
the main problem i find is i can't carry on after the game is completed, WHY NOT? thats the only problem i have with this game why does it have to end? im not asking for an enormous sandbox, open environment but surely its not too hard just to allow you to keep playing after the main quest is complete, why can't you carry on from where you left? rebuild the greywardens, help the circle f magi, travel with leliana(or whoever you may have picked)
it just seems to me that i go through all of the effort for nothing, it just ends.
