Eh the Chantry may believe that but only the most radical/idiotic templars try to enforce it probably because the Chantry knows the king won't hesitate to tear them a new **** if they ****** him off.

I don't think one king has the power to do that. The mage/Templar conflict will go on no matter who dissaproves. For example in Awakening Alistair allows Anders' conscription. And yet the templars come to arrest him anyway.

One Templar who may have taken the matter into her own hands tries to arrest him.

It depends. I used the neutral option at the start of Act 3 (which leads to the mage-supporting quests anyway) and I supported the mages at the end because the Circle wasn't responsible of Anders's actions. Hawke, Varric and the templars are more responsible (because the formers protected him and the latter decided for some reasons to not arrest him in the first two Acts and in Act 3 because he was unders Hawke's protection). than the Circle.
Depending on how the templars and the mages are portrayed in DA3 and how they'll act in the game, I'll decide which side I'll support. Though I'd prefer to have the option on having a neutral path. A third choice like the one in TW1 between the Scoia'tael and the Order of the Flaming Rose would be great.

If they're anything like the pants-on-head retarded mages in DA2 I'll gladly kill them all.

I imagine my Warden would support the mages if she was asked nicely, but she's currently on the Island of Lost Protagonists so she won't be much help.

Who keeps necroing these things?

Politically, the mages theoretically could get help from various warlords, in exchange for their powers (mind control and whatnot), which isn't all that ideal.

I supported the mages all through DA2. They kept attacking my mage Hawke on sight anyway. Won`t fall for it again.

Honestly people in the game world need to start seeing Mages and Magic for what they are, an alternative to technology. They don't have the Qun's tech, but they have magic. Every single aspect of their lives could be made better with magic. Many of the Blood Mages you see are driven to it, and many of the Demonic possessions are a result of young Mages not knowing enough, because Magic and Mages have the view they do in this society. Many of the problems with Magic could be prevented with simple enlightenment and acceptance in the world. I think, at some point, people will be forced to see that because technology evolves, and a few Mages to counter cannons won't be on the play field anymore, the Qun will advance its tech. As a result, since I don't see the Humans catching up technologically, I think their society needs to take a more technical/mechanical approach to magic, and start advancing it instead of shunning it and shutting it away.

However, when it comes to the groups that are going to support this . . . I'm unsure. The religious views hold people back where magic is concerned. In a way the best thing that could happen is a sort of renaissance where instead of an artistic and scientific advancement you get an artistic and magical advancement, where you see every instance of scientific advancement replaced with an equivalent arcane advancement. If they were to stop thinking in terms of spells and demons, and more in the line of practical application in everyday life and military life . . . I think the people would fare better.

I'm still stuck on what groups would really back the Mages up, and lead into a line of thinking like this though . . .

As the Inquisitor, I will be impartial. The Inquisition and subsequent Circle of Magi system was blowback for the abuse of the Tevinter Imperium. In order to establish a lasting peace, I will work to establish a fairer system where misuse of Magic is policed while Mages still have their rights protected.

If a balance isn't struck, then the world will shift between hardline Templar authority and the few bad Mages abusing their power, conflict erupting no matter where the world shifts.

Edit:

Sorry, misread thread.

I think the Dalish would side with the Mages if the Templars ever go after their Keepers and/or they're not busy fighting the Orlesians as the latest book might imply. The Qunari, if they ever make an appearance somehow, would side with the Templars and seek to convert them.

Nobody sane, half the mages don't even support the rebels, many fighting in the side of the chantry. An inevitable rise of continent wide magocracy ruled by blood mages and armies of abominations and demons? We allready saw it in tevinter, and it aint pretty. Who in their right mind would want it? let alone the non-mage rulers of the nations of thedas who has everything to lose, and practicaly nothing to gain (replacing the chantry monopoly on magic with the liberated circles monopoly).

Using widespread blood magic in a utilitarian way to echieve your goals, is an excelent way to convince just about every nation in thedas to unite against you and launch an exalted march that will make the old school templar "kill all magic users" way look tame and reasonable. If the first crusae is any indication it will go something like "first we rape them, than we kill them, than we burn them and than we eat them. That's the only sure way to deal with an appostate!".
