So on my way to Arl Howe's estate, a member of the Crows comes up and asks Zevran to rejoin. Despire my crying of not to listen to him, Zevran persisted on attacking me - did I do something wrong?

You didn't talk with him enough or treated him like crap prior to that encounter. If your approval isn't high enough he will always turn on you.

You probably didn't have high enough loyaltyscore with Zhev...

Which means he doesn't care for you at all...

Tip is: Talk to him, give him precious gifts and get him to like You if You want him to stay ;)

All you have to do is get him to 'neutral'. All that takes is a few conversations. He's not that hard to become friends with, and neutral means that he won't fight with you, but he also won't fight against you. If you get him higher, like to 'warm' or 'interested' he'll fight with you against his former comrades. All it takes is getting him to the 20 to 25 range for neutral, and the 35 to 40 range for 'interested' or 'warm'. He's not hard to turn to favor the PC, in my opinion.

He and Loghain are the only characters where it's possible to get them up over 40 approval points in just a couple of conversations (biggest jump with Zev is 22 points that I've found, biggest with Loghain I found I think was 26).  I talk to all the NPCs anyway -- if they're following me, I want to know about them.  Besides, everyone has a really interesting story.

Yeah >_>

You didn't ever talk to him.

If you get his approval to like 30ish, he'll never betray you the entire game, and becomes one of your most loyal allies, and thats really only 2-3 talks with him, as he tends to get huge boosts of Approval, rather then the smaller 3-5 Alistar tends to get.

He turned on me as well, but like everyone else said, I ignored him completely in favor of Leliana. And when he betrayed me, he still had the junk gear he came with. :)

You don't have to ignore the people you're not using, you know? :P
Give them all a bit of love...

I heard +33 approval is enough for him not to turn on you. Cant say, I either kill him right away or have him around 70 without a problem. Boots, gloves and few gold bars can buy his eternal love and gratitude without even chatting much.

He won't be turning on me this game, for sure, I killed him. Had to do it once, just to see...

One way to solve THAT problem
In all my playthroughs I never managed to kill him. I wanted to so often. He's just so... cute.

I had to kill him once, but I've discovered that the boots and gold and silver bars will keep him loyal. The gloves too, though I only found them once.

They are always in the same chest in Shade camp past Great Oak in Brecilian forest.

Question about Zevran:

If you kill him outright (Ambush scene, he falls, then the dialogue choice), are you supposed to get the Crows' Messenger inviting you to join?

EDIT:  As for me, the Female PCs either questioned then killed (Noblewoman), or romanced him (Elf Mage, City Elf Rogue) to the sex scene.  He doesn't betray then.

I killed him on my initial playthrough without even realizing he was a potential party member. Imagine my shock when I found out!

Actually, I still kill him on most playthroughs. I've only let him live and used him once, but when I did I made him one of the core characters of that playthrough.

I don't know for sure, but the messenger never showed up for me until Zevran was in my party.
