So, for my next round in my DA:I suggestion list, I'd like to request named units.
What I mean by this is naming NPCs who then we can either fight alongside in combat, or battle against as an enemy.
To go into more detail:
I got this idea after listening to some conversations in regards to the new XCOM game. In DA:O, when you are back in Redcliffe with your army, you can speak with the Dwarven soldiers who will be fighting alongside you, with them discussing which families wimped out and weren't going to fight. You could also talk to the Dalish, who gave some insight into the upcoming battle. While this was done to foreshadow the coming fight, it also got me thinking... what if, when I summoned the dwarves or Dalish into battle, I actually brought one of these guys Inhad just spoken to?
Im not asking for any special abilities or powers, or to make them super units... just a regular unit with a name. A name I's now recognize. And, potentially, a name I'd be horrified to see die. Because in the case of DA:O, the units I summoned during the final battle were just numbers. But if I had to see an NPC who Inhad spoken with, who I had exchanged words and encouragement with... I'd be tempted to risk life and limb running across the field of their health started to drop.
Similarly, if we are fighting the Mage/Templat war, someone who might be a named NPC ally in one playthrough might show up as a named NPC enemy on another if I am playing the opposite side. Would it not be a little heart wrenching to realize that you aren't killing Templar #206, but rather Saul, a Templar from Val Royeaux who has a sick mother at home? Or not killing another blood Mage, but Sally, a girl who first discovered magic as a child by making flowers bloom?
Givinf personal details to these characters, not as fully fleshed out companions, but as more than just nameless, faceless NPCs, would be a cool step to making the world more alive.
What say you?

GOD. I HATE posting on my mobile phone. Please pardon my typos and my phone's inability to let me go back and edit correctly with the lightbox system.

I'm all in favor of having more named characters instead of tons of nameless mooks.

I know I had a moment of trepidation in DA2 during the Qunari invasion when Insaw the word 'Sten' above one of the Qunari, before remembering that was his title, not his name. If Bioware had made me fight and kill Sten as a random mook, I would have flipped a table.
That said, I find naming units or having NPCs we've encountered before being placed in harm's way, either as allies or enemies, could bring a morality to the gameplay itself, instead of forcing combat to be a mindless slaughter of nameless units.

Unless you're going to let the player exercise a decent level of control over these units, that would be annoying. Having to baby sit NPCs to stop their tremendously idiotic AI from getting themselves killed is not fun.

So you don't like teaming up with Tower Guard?

I did. There should be a cameo and a romance with Tower Guard in DA3.Sejborg wrote...
