I really liked the character in ME2 and at the start of ME3.
Liara's problem was that her character seemed to have had several people write her, and each had a different idea regarding dialogue, emotion, etc. I would have had her keep the LotSB personality during the war and what we saw on Mars. More focused and a hell of a lot less naive. But it was like she had multiple personalities.
WTF? Who is this person in this act? One time she's focused and ruthless. Another she's the ME1 Liara on Therum. I blame the writers. The writing was pretty bad. Her character deserved a lot better.
Hell, this entire game deserved a lot better writing.
The focused and ruthless act is just that... an act. To intimidate. To better shoot things when she's on her own. It's an act both towards others, and to herself.
I thought this was pretty clear to players?
She's always the ME1 Liara. All that changed is that she saw that being ME1 Liara wasn't always appropriate to the situation.
So then that balance of personalities shatters on Thessia for a while. She's torn between 'tough' Liara that knows well how dark the galaxy can be, and 'No! My home! I was with mother here... those monsters!' young Liara.
And then add that Javik tells her that the asari past (aka Liara's past and tradition..) is a lie...
Liara isn't the best written, but sheesh, she's nowhere near the worst.
