Even with an ensemble cast, the show is designed to hit a target market. In a game with VO's and sucide missions, Mass effect in its current form is as close to ensemble as you'll ever get.

If the cast is ensemble, what the hell does VO work have to do with it? Never mind that your first sentence has nothing to do with anything. With an ensemble cast, you're hiring actors who are widely known for a type of role (see: the expendables). You don't watch an ensemble performance for a single actor or character.

Mass Effect (as-is) is FAR, FAAAR from ensemble.

Mass effect is far from equal screen time to you simply because your'e not considering the VO and suicide missions. In reality, there is a fair amount of screen time for characters given those player options for everyone, not just one person, and everyone happens to be the target market.

Thing is that she was built up in ME2 (and is consistently said in ME3) to have a substantial role as the Shadow Broker. I don't know about anyone else, I was expecting her to be this information queen and would be providing missions and resources. I know I know - that's what shes doing. But the problem is seeing it and hearing it. When we see it, it registers in our mind that she's doing something. When we're merely hearing it, I'm a little skeptical. It was extremely poor story telling. That's a benchmark rule of writing: show don't tell. Liara broke this rule throughout ME3 and at the same time recieved much characterization in a Mary Sue sort of way. If she ONLY had a scene with Javik (which was a highlight for me and keeps consistency with her ME2 characterization - only wish they had the Shadow Broker theme playing in this scene) then I don't think I personally would be moaning as much but we also got Ashley, Tali, Kaidan, Garrus - everyone going "Awwwwwwwww".

It also doesn't help that I read the production notes for the Mars sequence and Liara is totally written as a Mary Sue. Vega is entranced by the beautiful Asari. Liara notices and doesn't care."

There is a lot of things that could have been done better if given more time, disc space, and money. Liara isn't the only one, and wouldn't be my first choice.

Well, yeah. We can spend all day spending time on what could have been better but if I recall we're talking about Liara. There are about a hundred other threads abotu the thousand other issues.

Liara's quite an overrated character to begin with.

Liara's reactions on Thessia didn't annoy me for the most part, seeing as she isn't a trained soldier. The only line that grates on me is "Next time we go to war, perhaps the Alliance could spring for air support!"

Excuse me dear, our planet was one of the first to get worked over. Perhaps the Asari should have done something sooner.

I'm not even going to read all the replies. Liara has been my LI since I played me1. Sure she's annoying sometimes, doesn't mean I just can't ignore her.

I mean, do you even enjoy the game? Or do you just play and look for stuff to bash on? Seriously, know I remember why they shut down the chracter romance/character forum

Blame Mac Walters for everything there's wrong in Mass Effect 3. It's the truth.

That's all you need to know about the Asari.

As for Liara in general, she only annoys me because I don't value her any more than other characters... yet she keeps getting a place of prominence.

Also, being too friendly forces those cheesy hugging/touchy feely moments that I'm too emotionally retarded to appreciate. I understand people like that stuff, but I don't.

To be fair, this could happen to other characters. I made the mistake of being too nice to Cortez.. and then got that awful STEEEEVE moment at the end of the game.

Well this is BSN, so every character who isn't a 1-note badass or an unfeeling slab of rock is hated by at least a significant number of people.

You have to admit, Ashley's war-scream afterwards is hilarious.

I'll take your word for it. I've never let Ashley stick around that long.

When it comes down to it, I find a few characters annoying. Not just Liara.

Battle cry rundown:

James: Sounds like he hit his head too hard.
Kaidan: Sounds like he fell off a cliff.
Ashley: Sounds like someone strangled a cat.

I always thought Ashley sounded more like she was spontaneously giving birth to a porcupine.

It's worth noting that you only get those lines if you WEREN'T nice to Cortez. Otherwise he'll live and you'll just get STEEVE. It's funny how only ManShep and the human squadmates react like that; FemShep, EDI and the aliens must have been too embarassed.

Hahahaha Aha haah *cough*! Oh man, my sides...

Sure glad I had Tali and Javik on that part.

On topic : Being annoying is like a part of Liara.

Shepard is no less whiny and selfish in this regard. It might have been good to allow people who don't like Liara to call her out, though I think that would have only really flowed well if either Shepard didn't moan about or concentrate on Earth, or someone called them out on it. Liara doing that would have been hilarious.

Neither Shepard or Liara are 'whiny and selfish' for caring about their home planet being destroyed.

Frankly, that is an incredibly stupid accusation.

I enjoy all of the Mass Effect games despite their flaws. Liara is one of those flaws

They whine, they're selfish, it's pretty reasonable to be whiny and selfish in that situation, so frankly, meh, I don't give a sh*t how stupid you think my 'accusation' is.

That would be pretty hypocritical of Shepard.

Shepard spends the entire game moping about Earth and tries to convince everyone that retaking earth is much more important than defending Thessia, Palaven, etc.
