How come people always make Call of Duty references with respect to EA decisions?

CoD = Bland and unimaginative series.

EA = Bland and unimaginative games.

That's a fair enough opinion, but there were a LARGE number of DA:O mods created and distributed. Some of them were story based, some were cosmetic, some were just the ability to skip things (like the 'Skip the Fade/Deep Roads' mods). I have never seen a comparison of the number of NWN mod downloads vs. DA, though.

I was mainly referring to the story mods. I have several cosmetic mods for DAO and enjoy those quite a bit.

That said, I think such a heavy emphasis on mods would be giving the shaft to console folks, who would be missing out on a large part of the game's potential if it were to be designed that way. For that reason alone I doubt they would do that.

And I can tell you, just from my observations of the fan/author community of NWN vs DAO, there is significantly more content for NWN than there is for DAO, but this is primarily based on the way the toolset was designed, the world it was designed for, and so forth.

I'm no fanboy, but that's a load of **** and you know it.

They run a lot of games into the ground, but at the same time, are at the forefront of innovative new titles, or were for a long time.

**Objectivity FTW.

EA did not buy Obsidian.  But check out this from Forbes:

According to Obsidian Entertainment, the developer behind the Kickstarter smash success Project Eternity, publishers approached the developer prior to the Kickstarter asking them to do crowd-fund on their behalf.

“We were actually contacted by some publishers over the last few  months that wanted to use us to do a Kickstarter,” Obsidian CEO Feargus  Urquhart revealed in a Q&A on the Project Eternity Kickstarter page. “I said to them ‘So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for, using  our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then  publish the game, but we then don’t get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits.’ They said, ‘Yes’.”

Source: http://www.forbes.co...se-kickstarter/

Obviously Obsidian said no to the publisher.  There have been speculations in forums on who that publisher was.  The consensus seem to be it's EA, because EA knew if they used their own name to kickstart a project, no one would give anything because EA had such a huge image problem.

EA already has investors and they have Bioware as an RPG developer, why the hell would they need either Kickstarter or Obsidian.<_<

Because of Bioware's reputation after the release of DA2?

And Obsidian are the model of an RPG studio with their games that are plagued with endless bugs that make them almost unplayable.

Kickstarter = money.

Evil corporations love money.    Publisher would love to get their hands on Kickstarter, they just have not figured out how to do it without upsetting and turning off everyone, because  no one would give them a dime if people find out EA or some publisher is behind the Kickstarter.

They already have investors, they do not need Kickstarter.
And you do realize that developers who use Kickstarter spend all the money on developing the game and only make a profit by selling it when its done, so they are not actually earning any money for themselves through Kickstarter, which makes the whole point of publishers trying to exploit the sysyem moot.

Italian restaurants may be selling really well. That doesn't mean I want Taco Bell or Dunkin Donuts to start selling pasta.

Wow. I mean... WOW. That's maybe the best metaphor EVER for what EA does to game studios.

Well, assuming they'd eventually go the way of Bioware, I should be saddened because of the long term consequences.

On the other hand, however, as mainly a console gamer, I wouldn't necessarily mind it at first, as EA owning them would at least be an assurance that I get to play their last few good games as well (contrasted to Project Eternity right now).

Ask a publisher if they would like to publish a game at no cost to them.

It essentially rules out losing money, the worst that happens is not one person buys the game and they break even. Best case, they sell a million copies at pure profit. (This is of course assuming they don't go stupid with marketing)

And yes I think EA could get a successful kickstarter project. They put up Wing Commander or Ultima up there and watch what happens.
