If you listened to 'the fans' who proclaim such, each game has been a disaster and a deathknell for Bioware since Baldur's Gate. Jade Empire was a disaster was a disaster because it wasn't Baldur's Gate. Mass Effect 1 was a disaster because it was a shooter and moved away from the true RPG. Dragon Age Origins was a disaster because it wasn't Baldur's Gate despite being a spiritual sequel. ME2 was a disaster because it took out all the RPG elements and was a Gears of War Clone. Etc.

Bioware has always been in perpetual, fatal decline from 'the fans.' The next game which doesn't have some section proclaiming it as a fatal disaster will be the first, whereas the next game's critics will fondly look back and recall all the good perfection that was the previous game.

Hmm, okay, I didn't really look at the issue that way as the only Bioware game I played before ME was NWN and I was waaay too young to take any sort of interest in this vast&whining community. You seem like a man with experience so let's say, agreed.

Frankly if it weren't more than 80 years in the future that would annoy me. You might get me with a century and a half, if you absolutely had to have old-geezer-Garrus as a cameo, but a post-war timeskip should be an invitation to re-cast the galactic setting. While Mass Effect has never been particularly good about timelines making sense, letting the Reaper War go out of living memory for all but the longest-lived races would be a good step.

The only returning character cameos from Mass Effect I think I could handle would be Matriarch Liara, Wrex, and Grunt. You know, the species that could become old over a few centuries.

To this, I disagree. I like 30-60 years after the war. So the galaxy has mostly recovered but  there are issues here and there. I also want some cameos, honestly, not a huge impact or whatever, but I don't want characters like Garrus who I'd grown to love to be suddenly forgotten, despite the impact they had on Shepard's story and Reapers defeat.

I can see your point of view, though, I'd be annoyed if anyone from the trilogy played a huge part again. No, I want new squad, new opportunities, completely new game, but such that still makes old Mass Effect players smile once in a while.

“There is one thing we are absolutely sure of – there will be no more Shepard, and the trilogy is over.”

If they can just change the word 'Shepard' to 'Mass Effect', then I'll be satisfied.

ME4 Prediction:

It will be 500-1000 years after "The Shepard".  Almost everything about the ending of ME3 will be retconned by blaming the Storyteller at the end for being senile.

"It didn't really happen that way, Jimmy, your grandpa was very old and misremembered.  What really happened was _____"*insert pointless fanservice bullsh!t montage here*

Then we get a short cinematic that tells us that Shepard was never found (regardless of ME3's endings) and there is a legend that states that s/he - because of the Reaper tech Cerberus shoved up his/her ass could still be alive! - Lister-like in stasis in some dead Reaper hulk or on the now-Forgotten Leviathan World. BUT no one conveniently believes that the Reapers were real anymore, and Shepard was "just a story".

The ancient asari councillor/Queen of Thessia II is your mentor and guide on this action-filled journey to find the Saviour of The Galaxy.  You will then be allowed to pick from several customizable characters:

 - L'i'n'd'a, a mysterious asari commando, who cryptically tells anyone who will listen that her father was "some human" that died before she was born.  She doesn't like humans.  *hint, hint*

 - Johnny, a wisecracking turian sharpshooter, following in the family tradition.  *Wink, wink*

 - An angry prothean teenager, who was awakened from stasis when a new relay is opened to a system that was conveniently overlooked by the Reapers.

 - Salli'boring Vas Tedious, a young quarian maiden on her Pilgrimage, mistress of the deadly art of handwring-fu, conveniently "developed" for her age.

 - Urdnot Chad, interstellar krogan of leisure, who has forgotten his people's warrior past, and must learn to fight anew.

 - Frank, the son of the son of the son of the son of the son of Ash and Vega, badass to the bone.  May or may not be gay.  Because CONTROVERSY.

 - Barry the batarian, surly but goodhearted Commander of the Human-Batarian Friendship Fleet.

 - Stan, salarian genius, who may or may not hold a dark secret that may or may not be relevant to the story.

Naturally, it turns out that everything was true, the asari Queen of Thessia II is really Liara and Shepard was with her the whole time, keep alive through Reaper tech.  Like EDI, he had to be given an artifical body - with "extensions", chuckle, chuckle, wink, wink - and had to learn to live and love all over again.  He comes to as his heroic self just in time to discover that a new force of Reapers - based on a race of hyper-intelligent budgies - are coming to destroy the Galaxy because of dark energy.  BUT - there is no ending!!  The games ends with Barry going, "Well, here we go again!" - everyone laughs and the scene freezes/credits/epic music.

To get to the amazing conclusion and stunning revelation, you grind through a "stunning" 5 hour SP engaging in the "innovative" gameplay that combines the best of Gears of War, Skyrim, the Witcher 2 (mostly for the boobies), COD and Diablo III.

SP will be expandable through the MP "Expandipacks" that cost 1800 Bioware points, or can be unlocked after 2500 hours of MP. Each pack will contain a gun, a suit, a knife, panties for Ms.Vas Tedious (as a collectible that can be traded), 12 minutes of non-playable cutscenes and a printable coupon good for two dollars off your next purchase from the Bioware store - US only.

The CE will cost $199.99, with exclusive goodies like a quarian inflatable "companion", a patch that says "I Remember Vega", a book of photos of EA Executives laughing all the way to the bank, and instructions on just where to jam your outrage.

GOTY material, I swear.

i heavily heavily vote for a post-me3 game. I'd like to also know what happens to shepard (altho i guess we can know based on me3 decisions).

I am sure they can come up with something to come up with a fluid "canon" altho it would be really hard lol.

So i don't want any simultaneous stories or prequels. that's my opinion and desire

If you listened to 'the fans' who proclaim such, each game has been a disaster and a deathknell for Bioware since Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate 2 was a disaster because it threw away BG1's contiguous map and exploration in favor of separate zones you could only enter if you had a quest there. NWN was a disaster because it had ugly 3D instead of beautiful 2D, terrible writing, and no real party system. KotOR was a disaster because Bio sold out to the console market. NWN, in particular, was despised upon release.

I'd like a prequel, taking place during the First Contact War. Play as Anderson, Anderson did say that he was some big hero during the the war in me3.

Playing as a bad-ass young Anderson gets my vote.

Lets be honest. Bioware and its developers have said a lot of things leading up to and about Mass Effect that haven't been true. So until its released and Shep isn't the hero don't take it off the table.

Here's my feedback to them. Bring back Drew Karpyshyn or make Mac Walters step down as a lead writer. He's not as talented as he sees himself.

maybe shepard being indoctrinated was the beginning of ME4 and not the end of ME3?

ARE BIOWARE GENIUSES? ONLY TIME WILL TELL!!!!!! lol

(you wouldn't necessarily have to play as shepard either)

oh man please.....

I'm excited to see what else is coming from the Mass Effect universe. I do think this is the right decision, however. The staff at EA/Bioware came up with an amazing trilogy and it's time to let some new characters take leading or starring roles. I can't wait to see what they do next to explore this amazing universe that they have created. I am still enjoying the DLC as we keep getting to see more of Shepherd, but when a new game comes, I'll be ready for a new hero and a new adventure. I'll be waiting eagerly to see more in the world of Mass Effect.

Thought they already said the ME3 was the end of Shepard's story arc?

Yes. Repeatedly. Casey said it. Miek Gamble & Mac Walters have said it. Jessica and I have said it.

Commander Shepard's adventures took place in ME1-ME3 (and DLCs). We are working on another ME game, but it is not a Commander Shepard game.

We have no other details as to what the new ME game will be, who what where when, etc it will be. It will likely be over a year before we start talking about what the new game will be, but you're welcome to contribute what you would like to see in it until then.

continue the story arc with my previous post that shepard was being indoctrinated, and play as someone else trying to finish the job xD xD PLEASEEEEEE.

The madness of the earth mission.. the whole epic feel of doom throughout most of the priority missions and even just walking around the citadel. PLUS with the introduction of the colllectors again.. that environment needs to come back omg PLEASEEEEE.. a whole game in the frenetic galaxy that was ME3's priority missions, or towards the end of the game missions.  I'd lose my marbles.. in fact, the bag they are in just ruptured and they are falling out like a mad faucet omgawdddd

we can play as shepard 2.0 trying to save shepard and the universe, maybe even team up with your imported shepard later on in the game (would be pretty epic man, and giving a longing feeling to the player wishing we were them, but also looking up to them b/ c we know how their life was like seeing as how we PLAYED IT).

That's my idea, and i think it's a good one =)

*edit*
I'm gonna start folding an air force of paper airplanes made of dollars, make a paper aircraft carrier made of dollars, then launch a few priority missions against bioware HQ and have them bomb $$ on you guys/girls if this becomes a reality.

So, afterall that hard work, through all the crap BioWare put their character through, they dump him with the crappiest ending ever. /ouuf. I seriously feel sorry for him. I am glad BioWare is not writing my life.

Shepard, almost dies in ME, does die in ME2, dies again in ME3. Just so he can save a galaxy that didn't even believe him about the reapers. *sigh* poor dude. Not to mention his LI.

I am sad to hear this, but moving forward is the only way ME can be saved.

It must be a sequel. I hate prequels. I like moving forward. Forward, forward and forward.

Or it must be with Harbinger being the main guy in the game. If anything else. I am not interested.

Be awesome if Harbinger was the main villain. Though I wonder if he be killed in the first game, like Sovereign?

IMO you can create a character that's better than Harbinger (ME1 & 2) Sovereign vs Harbinger (so we know it's possible)

I believe Harbinger will return in ME4 (unless there's a DLC where he's killed off) .......<_<

Guys, if you read the book revelation, they call the First Contact War the "bloodless war". How can that be a good game? (dont mean to be insulting or aggresive)

Why is there so much rage in this thread? The next game might be glorious.

I guess the wounds of Shep's final act are still too fresh atm. By the end of next year, when BW will have released info about the new game, you will all be enthusiastic again.

Shepard is Mass Effect... My Shepard is Mass Effect. If they are going to exploit this universe, I hope they have the decency to maintain "the reaper thing" out of it; first, that's Shepard's story. Secondly, It was handled poorly at ME3 ( Yeah, shoot me but I don't like the ending nor the continuity of the choises from ME1 and ME2); and finally, we already know how It ends (not)

wow you're a genius.

hehe..

To add to my post about indoctrination theory being the beginning of ME4 and not end of ME3 (also stated that you don't need to necessarily play as shepard since they ended him as a character):

The new shepard 2.0 cannot have the same influence over the galaxy shepard has/had or that would be pretty gimmicky imo.  INstead of you do interact with your old imported shepard like i had suggested would be pretty sick, he could do the politics for you while you play the role of a grunt or something.  This would also give the character more time to be in the frenetic environment that i suggest putting into ME4 (see my above post).

in short:

-new guy can't have same influence as shepard or it just won't feel right
-interacting with your old imported shepard would be awesome and emotional
-continue wih the same chaotic holy omgawds environment that ME3 had in it's prio missions (basically galaxy going nuts, especially now that the collectors are back)
-indoctrination theory being the start of ME4 and not the end of ME3

=)
