They'd have to be very small scale just that they make any sense in relation to the universe.

Aha. Like in Dragon Age 2, which I defend by the way, cause it's more personal, less (yawn) epic then Origins. It's more close to the skin, and therefore interesting. More mature than Origins. Something like this in ME universe? Yummy!

If it's after the events of ME3 then it will probably be hundreds if not thousands of years into the future where ending choice decision has mostly leveled. Synthetics are rebuilt post-Destroy, the Reapers are somehow gone in Control, and in the Synthesis ending the cosmetic changes (green circuits) have either toned down or disappeared. There will still be some differences in peoples' canons but it won't be game-changing to the point where you are seeing 3 completely different game builds.

The KotOR 2 approach, eh? Grind the previous game's endings into indistinguishable mush?

Eww.

Unless they make the new game a spin-off, I don't see how else they can do it.

There would be some differences--mostly cameos. Maybe the way some species treats you would be different depending on the decisions you made in the ME trilogy.

I'm just saying that they wouldn't have to build 3 completely different games...

Well then, we are people of differing opinions. But if that is what you want, then be my guest.:)

Shepard deserved better than being left under a pile of wreckage, but I've always thought a reboot -with no mention whatsoever of the events of the previous trilogy- would be the best if not the only way to continue the series.

This will continue without me though, my ME journey ended with Shepard's story.

Is there any established lore about how many untested mass relays are still out there?

What I'm getting at is, what if there's a whole advanced civilization somewhere that has never come in contact with the species we know? Maybe they only use traditional FTL, or they've only ever used one or two of the relays.

That is good thing. I believe a fresh start also will remove biggest handicap of ME3 (in my opinion), too much choices from earlier games.

I'd prefer them to just take the hit and canonize something. Good enough for Fallout, good enough for BG, good enough for ME4.

Thought they already said the ME3 was the end of Shepard's story arc?

Yup they've been saying this since ME2. It would only be news if they changed their mind on it.

I don't mind Shepard not being in the next Me game. What I do want is for him to get a better end, and be referenced in the next game, and not just by codex.

If they do that (and especially if they do that with Synthesis), the amount of rage, whine and butthurt will be so immense that it will create a reality-warping black hole of negative emotions that will collapse on itself, possibly drowning the entire universe in severe depression, forcing it to unmake itself to save itself from pain.

Would Bioware really risk that?

So Bioware throws a marketable popular character under the bus despite huge fan outrage, leaves the universe in a muddled pile of mess, and says they want to make more ME games but won't fix the mess? Then they say don't want Shephard 2.0 despite the fact that Shephard is part and parcel of the ME universe. Hmmm..... I predict.. failure.

That's what confuses me. I know some people legitmately want a new protagonist, but I don't think this population would also be against more Shepard if, in an alternate universe with different ME3 endings, that was the direction BW wanted to go.

People do love Shepard. And why wouldn't we? Commander Shepard is an avatar, is a template, and is different for everyone (and can be different every time for the same player). I don't think media consumers can get sick of a template RPG character in the same way they can get sick of an established character. And in an RPG, not only is it hard to get sick of your individualized character, but it's hard to ever want to give him/her up.

While I understand the need to freshen up the franchise with a new protagonist, I think that BW is projecting the "shelf life" of established characters, instead of considering the (probably considerably longer) shelf life of a Shepard character.

Normally I would have been fine with Bioware doing something different with Mass Effect after ME3, but that was assuming that Shepard's story actually got a conclusion worthy of the franchise. Now that Shepard's story was utterly ruined and ridiculed by Bioware, I don't see why I would want to invest my time in new ME games. ME3's ending was the most disappointing ending I've seen in any video game I've played. I'm really not interested in putting my trust in Bioware again, especially when they're making one bad decision after the other.

I'm far more interested in the prospect of a new protagonist than watching Shepard defy death even more than s/he already has, and I'm ready to create a new avatar---if the setting goes in a tolerable direction post-ME3.

Well no doubt we'll get a default marcus fenix type character, with how ME3 turned out it would seem im not there target audience anymore, if they treat the hero of there biggest franchise like the way they treated shepard then i will no longer buy there games for story/characters.........i'll rent it as a shooter no doubt. I mean knowing no more shepard kinda devalues Omega even more as what's the point in it......he/she will be left lying in rubble regardless........

Ya, synthesis would definitely make me want to puke, but it would be kind of interesting if the new protoganist plot was to reverse synthesis or even control.

Thing is im with you on that, but.....them saying there wont be a shepard 2.0 could mean two things...........hopefully creating a new hero in a new setting, or heaven forbid they give us a default type ala geralt in witcher 2 or gears of war drones.....and if they go that route i certainly wont be interested.

Yes, you'd be one of the people who legitmately want a new protagonist, but I'm curious: in a hypothetical situation wherein the story arc was not intended to end after 3 games, and wherein the story actually was intended to go somewhere in a fourth game, would you feel sick of Shepard?

The way the story went in the 3, you're right, more Shepard would feel like more unbelievable death defiance. But I wonder if that's because BW underestimated the amount of mileage you could get out of one save-transfer character and shortchanged the potential story arcs.

(Semi-related sidenote: are there any other games with customizable characters that can be save-transfered to sequels on the market right now? I actually don't know and I want to.)
