I think he's referring to the Thermal Scopes.

Ah, the decision lies in keeping the javelin as a unique weapon in this way.

I have one. Any plans to "fix" the crusader? It has a known aiming issue (fire delay).

Also, where do the devs stand as far as the gun tiers? Are commons supposed to be viable across all difficulties, or should they be tossed aside when you unlock a rarer version?

Do any of you guys roleplay any of your characters on your personal accounts, like have some sort of backstory or personality in mind for some of your favorite kits?

Or am I the only Drunk Turian Sentinel and Heavy Metal Havoc? Image IPB

This does remind me of a funny story.  The man who voiced our krogans was playing one day during development.

He started saying things like (and imagine it in the Krogan voice): "Hah! That's using your head! Get it?  Head? Er...well, that's fresh where I'm from." Image IPB

Had me laughing pretty hard.

In some ways, yes, I do try to think of how my characters might think and behave.

Image IPB

Hey Derek...

Is there any chance we can get new audibles like this in some upcoming DLC, or has that been ruled out as a possibility?

Hey Derek  -  I would fall off my chair laughing if my Kroguard spouted something like that after headbutting a trooper.  The Krogan soundset is my favourite in the game, anyway - this would just be perfect.  If there is any way gems like this could be added, I will throw money at you.

Also, aside from aesthetics, why is the Shadow your favourite?  And why do Nemeses' sound like strangled poultry?  Finally, and you prolly can't answer this due to the whole NDA -> keeping the job thing, but - how likely is it that Santa will give us a new DLC for Christmas?  (Still thoroughly enjoying Retaliation and Challenges (which I am lying in bed awake at night thinking about... by the way, THANKS for that!), but doesn't hurt to be looking forward to mooaar already!).

Thanks for taking the time to have this dialogue with us!  :)

The shadow is cool to me, simply for style, look, and shadow strike.

No, the audio team does not throttle chickens for sounds.  It just sounds that way.

I must refrain from NDA related questions.  Sorry.

When planning to do the weekly balance changes, did you and your team anticipate the reaction they would get? To me, the balance changes seem like one of the major driving forces in keeping things interesting some seven months after release. With the forums exploding the way they do every Tuesday, I've got to believe other players in the industry have taken notice.

When each balance change is decided upon, the team does tend to look at each other knowingly whether it is a buff or nerf.  We then don our flak jackets and strap on the helmets in preparation.

It's funny how you can buff a hundred things but nerf one and it's the end of the world.  I've already discussed how difficulty in our game is to be viewed and that is the reason why everything simply can't be buffed in order to balance things.  Our goal is not to make the game easier but we still try to remain realistic in how a particular power/weapon/ or combo fits within the game.

Our goal therefore is to keep weapons and powers controllable without having to touch enemy factions too much.  Not that the enemy factions do not also need tweaking.  We just don't want to have to continuously give the enemies resistances or more health just to compensate for growing weapon and power strengths.

Hey Derek, just a general question here!

How do 'leaks' happen in the Gaming Industry?

I always have this humourous image in my head that a dev just writes up an email with game information on it and accidentally clicks *Send to the whole world*. It would be great if you could provide a little insight. Thank you. ^_^

They do happen like any other industry.  Accidental or incidental.  Whether unintentional or intercepted.

Obvously, people try to data mine often just to try to get a glimpse of what is coming as well.

As long as people try to keep secrets there will be people trying to expose them.

Is there any chance Eric Fagnan has seen this thread that has been addressed to him?

http://social.biowar.../index/13211790

My assumption is that he has and has just chosen not to reply to it for whatever reasons, but I figured I'd ask you since he has ignored the message I sent to him inquiring about this.

I know Eric does read the forums regularly but, given the size and scope of some requests or questions, he just does not have the time to address them.

I don't suppose you could at least pass the link along to him so I know at least he has seen it?  If he decides to not read the thread I plan on continuing to bump it.

If you PM him the link, I am sure he will read it.  He may not comment on it but will certainly read it.

A few questions about Cerberus dialogue..

How can Cerberus enemies across the map see/know that you're cloaked? (They say "Target cloaked!") Do they "hear" the cloak sound from that far away, or what? I've heard that enemies can communicate and relay location/information, but this seems to happen when there are no enemies at all within eyeshot, such as at the start of a wave.  And I'm talking distances from the bottom room of Firebase White up to the landing pad where there's no feasible way that they'd see you or even hear your footsteps

Can the Dragoon dialogue be altered slightly from the Centurion in the future? I understand it's easier to copy/paste it, but it's a little confusing. Maybe a pitch change at least? Also, I don't believe Dragoons are supposed to be "team leaders", so I don't think the Dragoon should have the "Squad! Report!" type dialogue, right? Or are they supposed to be communicating between each other because they come in packs?

and a more lighthearted one..

Why do Cerberus units yell out "enemy drone!" when you deploy a decoy, then turn and start shooting it? Seems rather silly, no?

"Hey, that's not an enemy!"
"SHOOT IT ANYWAY!"

That's some bad leadership right there..

Even though it may appear no enemies have line of sight it is still possible a glimpse it caught.  Just enough to notice.

Any further voice changes would certainly require a patch.  Dialogue is also set without calling voice talent back up to record more lines.  It's a tall order.

Drones, as weak as they seem, are still considered a priority target as they can still mess up your day. Image IPB

Derek,
Is it a possibility if a list could be formed of the voice actor's that voice the specific multiplayer characters? A few threads here tried to piece it together themselves, but there wasn't anything set in concrete as I recall, and the end credits didn't list anything specifically.

I can ask.  I just can't promise it will happen.

Oh, here's a question:

Presumably the process for the weekly balance changes takes roughly a week. You also presumably become aware of balance issues via the forums. At what point in the week is it "too late" for any relevant fixes to show up in the next balance change, but must be postponed until the next cycle?

Also, how do you balance damage, enemy HP, and other similar stats? What sort of criteria are used? DPS, time to kill, or something else entirely?

We are usually one week back from the last set.  Emergency ones can get prioritized however.

We look at the rarity of the weapon, how much damage a weapon or power should do and adjust it according to other advantages / disadvantages it may have, plus a look at whether or not the weapon or power fills a particular niche as well.  Of course, it doesn't end there. We also look to see how combinations and builds affect it too so that is does not become so rediculously powerful as to trivialize the difficulties.

DPS and time are only a couple of items...Weight, recoil, ammo capacity, etc.  There are a good deal of factors which may seem minor but have an overall affect on usefulness in comparison to everything else.

What exactly do you mean by intellectual property issues? Are you sayng that because someone else (as in someone not working for bioware) came up with the idea that you are unable to use it?

Yes, a person has claim to their own ideas.  Lawyers have to be involved for a person to sign those over.

Hey Derek,

I'm not asking if it's in a DLC or anything, but do you think it would be cool if we had a new map where we were fighting on the outside of a broken Reaper ship in space?

Or failing that a ship to ship scenario?

Also I hear where you are is nice this time of year?

P.s. You can totally use those idea's if you want. :wizard:

I do like the idea of a shipborne map.

It is cooling off here in Edmonton.  I like the fall, though.

Chris Schanche did a whole explanation of how the crusader works.  It is a tricky weapon but not broken.

We fully expected the upper end of the common weapons to overlap into the bottom tier of silver difficulty, and the upper end of uncommon weapons to overlap the lower tier of gold difficulty.  There are only a few commons, and so, less variety, no real niche weapons.  Uncommons offer a bit more variety with a few niche weapons.  Gold offers the greatest variety with several niche weapons.  In effect, common weapons are replaceable with the upper tiers.  Uncommon is something of a choice.  Rares are the sought-after weapons for Gold difficulty.
