I remember from dragon age origins that the primary way the circles obtain their wealth is by selling lyrium imbued items which were made by the tranquil. So one of the reasons the mages hate the templars is also the source of their wealth. Where are they getting their money now that the tranquil can be cured? It takes money to wage a war after all especially if you want to convince others to fight by your side.
My guess at the moment is that the mages are offering services now. Especially those mages that are well versed in healing. While the player has no trouble finding healing potions that doesn't seem to be the case for your average man or woman on the street. Now you can either be down for months with a broken leg and lose the income from that time or you can barter with a mage especially a spirit healer and have your leg fixed up in an instant. This would also be good for public relations. If a town is sort of on the fence about who they support have a spirit healer pay the town a visit and go through the town minding broken bones and closing up wounds.
Of course this also causes a problem for the templars. While it is never directly stated judging by the comments from the potion and magic item vendor in the court yard of the gallows the templars take their slice of the pie as well. That said I also assume that the templars receive payment from the church as well. Now that they've broken off their ties with the church though where are the templars going to find their money? Are they going to start whoring themselves out like common mercenaries? After all, a templar can only wound you unlike a mage that can cure you.
That isn't the only issue of course. How is the lyrium trade going with so much chaos in the chantry? They were the ones that provided the templars with the lyrium to which they are addicted. It seems to me that this would be a very good opportunity for the decisions made back in dragon age origins to weigh in heavily. A pro mage Ferelden is in a very good position to hurt the templars by diminishing their supply of Lyrium. I believe Orzammar is the only place you can go for easy access to the substance after all.
Plus there is political reasons for the dwarfs to gouge the templars when it comes to Lyrium. As I recall the chantries attempt to spread its influence into Orzammar was not well received. Not only that but depending on what happened there was even talk of marching against the dwarfs. However, dwarfs don't have the fear of mages most do and they're plenty good at melee combat but can't use magic. It seems like the mages would have something to offer them.
Could economics matter?
