If there is a Cleric class, then why not a Druid class as well? I'd also like to see a Monk class for fighting barehanded.

I'd have to say no. I don't dislike clerics, but Dragon Age was meant to defy standard medieval fantasy tropes. I feel it succeeded.

There is no divine magic in the Dragon Age universe, so play a Mage/Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer, slap on the Juggernaut set, and roleplay a devout servant of the Maker. You get the same gameplay effect as a D&D style cleric, but you're perfectly within the bounds of the lore.

Cleric is not even a standard medieval fantasy trope. It is just a stupid AD&D thing.

I certainly would not call that the same play style as a Cleric.  The closest to me is the Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage, and that is still a bit off the caster/melee mark.

Wow. Not only do I not understand how some people's replies are irrelevant, for example mentioning Druids and Monks (Nothing to do with Clerics by the way. This is a Cleric post. But yes I would love to see those classes as well), but I also don't understand how some people consider mixing Arcane Warrior with Spirit healer equals a true Cleric. I want to be in some cool white robe, with a white staff, blue crystal and I want to be able to wield different powers than whats available in the creation tree. They can have different styles or armors and robes though. Not only that, I would like to see more options in class choices, and yes Templars need to have more abilities, a full 3-4 row section under the Cleric class. AND I stated "...So having said that, please please PLEASE Bioware, if you can somehow find lore for a Cleric class in the Orlais Expansion...." I know at this point there may be limits to the story line, but as we progress I am hoping for more. :)

I really don't see how Arcane Warrior can not be "on the mark" for caster/melee. That is the entire point of the Arcane Warrior Specialization.

The fatigue penalty for Combat Magic is 50%.  It feels like I'm either an effective melee combatant with one or two spells per fight or a tough caster, but not both.  The specialization isn't specialized enough, in other words.

Well, they have to keep it balanced in some way. Being able to swing a two-hander and cast spells without a steep penalty of some kind would make it pointless to play a Warrior or Mage that wasn't an AW.

And I don't understand how a person's topic could be so irrelevant.

You are suggesting adding a class that gets its power from a god, such as the Maker, even though there is no display of divine power in game. Unless of course you consider the darkspawn, which are supposedly the Maker's punishment on the world. Punish the world and yet grant people His own power, would a god do that? Of course, that is simply a belief of certain humans. Is there even any god confirmed to exist in Dragon Age universe in the first place? 4 real?

Based on what I've played of the game, clerics just simply don't belong in Dragon Age.

Agreed.  That's why I want a Cleric.

I'm going to pitch in with those who think clerics go against the lore. Aside from the fact that the only gods in the world are gone (the elven Creators and the human Maker, and even the Tevinter Old Gods), thereby making holy magic inaccessible (except possibly for Leliana, if you believe her visions are meant to be true, which I do not, but she's no mage), the game is meant to be very grey in tone. It's my opinion that there is no real place for a straight-up "white mage" in DAO. You can make a good-hearted mage, you can make a mage who's a fighter, but as a Grey Warden, you cannot be a mage who is a saint. Even if you could, the citizens of Ferelden would still treat you like they would any other mage. Magic in Ferelden is considered inherently bad.

I think this is the reason mods exist. And I don't mean to sound smarmy or anything--if there's an expansion or DLC that adds clerics, I'll shrug and say, "Oh, I was wrong." However, it's not something that I want in my game. Those of you who do can download the mods. Frankly I'm glad that the game didn't branch out with a hundred different classes and as many more specializations for what amounts to the same thing--or close to it. I think it's best to keep things simple. You cast magic, you're a mage. Doesn't matter if you're a healer or a fighter or a mix of both--you trained with the Circle, so you probably got exposed to a broad range of things, and may know the theory even if you don't yet know the spells. It's the same as if you were a two-handed fighter with a few points dropped into archery so you won't be helpless at long range. Remember, your mage is going to war. Killing darkspawn is as important as healing your comrades. Or something. It's late, and I have no idea if I'm even awake enough to be coherent, so this is my last post for the day/night/whatever.

I think that is an excellent point. Magic in Ferelden is often seen as an enemy of the church - the whole concept of the Circle of Magi shows that the Chantry, deep down, despises magic - but has enough moderates and realists in their ranks to realise that it's too useful to simply stamp out.

This whole situation means that the idea of holy spellcaster in Dragon Age simply doesn't make sense. Just look at the conversation you can have with that bible-basher apprentice in the mage origin story - 'Magic is vile and evil and wicked!'.

For all of you who want Clerics, Druids, Monks, Insert Random DnD class Here, or whatever, you do realize that DnD games still exist right? You can still go play them, rather than butcher the lore of DA: O, which was quite specifically created as a fantasy world in which religion and gods was actually a matter of faith rather than the usual proven fact. If you want DnD classes go play DnD. Dragon Age isn't DnD. Get over it. Or Mod it.

Nah, I don't think people should just "get over" what they want to see in a game. They have as much right to say what they want to see in the game as you do.

I think that for long term replay value there will need to be more than 3 classes and more specialities.

Hey, maybe an expansion will be "Return of the Maker" and introduce divine magic.

There is enough flexibility built into the class system that you can make whatever you want. Of course there are a lot of things i want in the game that arent there, but remember that the more time they spend making classes the less time theyhave for everything else.

Why do we need 5 different classes who all do exactly the same thing in a slightly different way when we can just build one of the classes into exactly what it would end up?

You can ask for changes but the only reason you want a cleric is that AD&D tells you it is one of the "official" things you should have in a realm with swords and magic. There's no reason for it to be "needed". Take get AW, grab a mace and focus on healing spells and you are more than close enough to a cleric to fool anyone.

As for replay value, are you kidding me? 3 classes? Those 3 classes play out with a lot of variation already based on your build of the character between the specializations and the skills you can get.

Clerics without a god to get their powers from would be some pretty sad clerics. I dont see the point really. They dont fit into the lore and setting of DA:O.

A Cleric's miraculous healing also qualifies as magic in my book.

I like the DA lore the way it is. Any supernatural ability, be it wintergrasp or heal, should elicit wonder.

I prefer that a Chantry member joins a monastery out of faith than out of magical perks.

The only way I would see a cleric class being available in DA:O is if they did it like Exalted did it: instead of being healers they were public speakers and agitators, the guys who stand in the middle of a market place preaching how the end of the world is coming and that everyone is a sinner unless they take up arms against this guy they really don't like, etc.

While in Exalted they had powers (as every man and his dog's left nut had powers coming out of their ears in that system) they were not healing powers, and DA:O clerics would not have even that. The priest in redcliffe even refuses to pretend to have powers, saying that is not their place. Instead, a cleric class would have things like the rally power or the bard powers to simulate them motivating those around them and such like, that would be your DA:O cleric.

You obviously must not have read the initial post. I asked Bioware if they could possibly find a way to put Clerics in the game, please do it (Find the way being the KEY word). OBVIOUSLY I understand that current lore doesn't allow it, but I asked for future expansions. I highly recommend you read a post clearly before replying to it, because its annoying to have to read posts like yours, unless you genuinely misunderstood it. And to those who say "get over it", no we will not. Thats why Bioware has these forums, so not only us as a community can discuss our OPINIONS but we can also give Bioware input as to what we want to see in future expansions/games. So yes, I believe that a good majority of people who have played this game, would like to see more classes in the future, AND if Bioware can IMPLEMENT the cleric class in the game to fit with the storyline then they should. If you don't like to play the Cleric class, then don't...play...it. Go ahead and choose from any other class. Make sense?

So you want them to change the lore to suit your personal belief that a fantasy game needs to have certain classes? Maker above, even the PRC (a custom content group from NWN) didn't desire to bring D&D classes into Dragon Age, instead wanting to explore the possibilities of the new setting.

Who said anything about the word "should"....? I stated that I would like to see it done and so would members of the community. Don't twist my words. Again...READ the POST. And who knows, maybe they're already thinking of implementing the cleric class, you sure don't. ;)
