With only 59 votes in the poll, 27 got it correct with 13.
Yet 20 people voted 0.

13. The 0 at the end multiplies with the 1 right next to it, and the sum of the rest of the numbers is 13.

I find it a little hard to believe this is deemed correct across the entire planet and every school in the world is teaching it, lol? I just don't understand why doing the multiplaction first (which is placed at the end) must be right.

Am I butthurt? Probably but according to you all my Maths teachers got it wrong too...

What kind of ridiculous mathematics test was this? That is by far the easiest maths "test" I have ever seen - it is not a very good test of one's mathematical capabilities (although, I suppose if you got it wrong then... well...), let alone their intelligence.

This is coming from a physicist though - so I'm not sure whether the average person would actually find that challenging; if they do find it difficult then I officially despair.

The answer of 13 is correct - there is no question of "deeming it correct" or subjectiveness here, in mathematics you're either wrong or you're right. However, one could quite rightly claim that the question has been set up in an illogical and frankly silly manner.

Here's another equation just for you, even has a story with it.

2+2+2+2*3

if four people each have two apples, and one of them goes and tripples their apple, how many total apples?
2+2+2+2*3=
2+2+2+6=
12

The answer of 13 is correct - there is no question of "deeming it correct" or subjectiveness here, in mathematics you're either wrong or you're right. However, one could quite rightly claim that the question has been set up in an illogical and frankly silly manner. 


It is set-up so that anyone who does not actually THINK it through will fail it.
It is not an IQ test, it is a test of Intelligence, who is capable of thinking, and reasoning.
Even if ones first conclusion is incorrect, an intelligent person would be able to spot their mistake when shown and be able to correct it from there.

I have seen only two (that have commented) that are not intelligent.
All others thus far have been able to realize their mistake and correct it.

I just put the equation through a caculator just now, in the same order it is presented, and the caculator spat out a 0 in response. So yes, caculators are sub-intellingence too.

You do relise that schools use ( ) around sums for a reason? 2+2+2*3 is a different sum to 2+2+(2*3)? You can go "WHOA ****** OVER HERE" all you like, but the creators of the test leaving that out opens it up for interepation, as far as my schooling taught me (basically they taught me do it in order presented, or do the one in ()'s first. I haven't encountered this method before today).

Aka shocking as this may be, maybe with ( )'s there people who got it wrong would answer differently? As far as I'm concerned leaving them out is like leaving a _ where a +, -, * or / should and then complaing people are stupid for not getting the right one, lol.

Let me guess, you used a basic calculator? On your phone perhaps?
ie One that does not follow Scientific laws?
Laws which tell you to follow the Order of Ops at all times?

Yes, Those simple calculators only do single equations at a time. for the simple fact that you can NOT even put 1+1*2 in at the same time, you have to do; 1+1=2, then 2*2=4, even though 1+1*2=3.

There is no interpreting the Order of Operations, aka PEMDAS, PEDMAS, PEDMSA, PEMDSA, BEDMAS, BEDMSA, BEMDAS, or even BEMDSA. All are the same

Paranteses (or Brackets)
Exponents
Multiplication/Division
Addition/Subtraction

Keep arguing against facts kid, it's fun.
You still want to tell me that things only exist if you believe they do?

Maturity: Maturity has little to do with age, but with the ability to react, cope and reason in an appropriate way for the situation. Maturity is learned through experiences and comes from healthy growth, just like a strong body. A parent gives a child food, rest and exercise for the growth of a strong body. Guidance in coping with emotional situations is what is needed to grow in maturity. The way a person deals with a crisis or makes decisions are good clues about their level of maturity.

I would fire you if you wrote software code like that, lol. Its the kind of cheap gotcha question you would see on an intro to programming first quiz to see if somebody knew how to prioritize operators. If you were interested in communicating you would make anything unusual very clear, which you went out of your way not to do. Most people looking at code like that would assume you forgot to put the brackets around everything before the *, and a maintenance programmer would probably do that thinking he was cleaning up the code....... Yeah breaking program...

Calculators aren't intelligent. Correct.

There are some more advanced calculators that will follow order of operations though.

You've never encountered order of operations before today? What country are you from?

Yes, ANYTHING times 0 is 0,
So, 1*0 = 0
10-1+4+0=13

Brackets are not needed unles you need to actually separate parts of an equation.

The equation is not written wrong.
The answer is 13. Period.

10 followed by a -1, then 4, and a 1*0

10-1+4+0=13
