How about, instead of an ability or a party member, we have a pet system? Would make things a lot cooler. It could be like in Origins, with a bit of Torchlight 2 mixed, without having to take up a slot in the party. Would have to be balanced of course but it could work. Just a thought.

To be honest I want a new pet. It shouldn't be an American Staff every time. And it should be as ability which allows to summon it.

I would be all for an extra slot in the party that is just for your personal pet. It could be filled in by a Mabari if you're a human noble warrior, or it could be filled in by a shackled demon if you're a Tevinter/apostate mage, or a spider or bear or something if you're a Dalish rogue. A golem if you're a dwarf.

The dog as a party member just takes up the spot of a companion that actually talks (hence, you lose out on party banter etc.), the summoning mechanic in DA2 was, I felt, much nicer.

The dog as an actual companion would need whole trees dedicated to the dog filling a certain combat role. I've talked about this at length before but... I don't see that happening. As such the DA2 method just made more sense. The dog wasn't so great that it changed the course of battles but wasn't so useless that you'd never summon him.

He was just an extra hand when you thought you'd need it. That's why if we get some attack animal I'd like it as a summonable and not a full companion.

I missed the dog as a companion. At least he had more interaction that way. The only time I could chat or interact with my dog was cutscenes at certain points, and that was largely disappointing.

To be honest, there are times when I prefer having a dog as a companion over some party members.

Having Loghain fight the Dog was fantastic.

I'd love to have it as a "fifth party member". Having to summon it seemed silly and unneccisary, but it shouldn't be a full party member either.

Can you have Loghain fight the dog in the duel?

Nah, Eamon's a party pooper. But it's still funny.

If BioWare brings a Mabari back, I would rather they gave it a new look and personality instead of another xeroxed copy of the one we had in Origins. We've seen and heard of Mabari with different genders, colors and personalities, yet we keep getting the same male brown goofy one.

If not, I'm still waiting on my Orlaisian rogue cat.

I think summon, but improve him a little. Make him stay with you until you go to your home base or un-summon him. Switching maps and having to wait to re-summon him was aweful. I stopped using him then.

I would love to have a Mabari Hound as a party member and be able to level him up to be summoned or him leveling up creates an extra slot.

I would also like to have a pack of Mabari Hounds on a leash like hunting dogs or attack dogs.

I miss my little puppy and the gifts he would bring me...
I never used the stupid summon in DA2 fights, because I never needed it. Sometimes I would summon my mabari when walking around town, shopping and stuff. He needed the fresh air. Poor little MartinVanBuren. Stuck with Gamlen all day in Act 1.

I am bored of mabari dogs, i would prefer something else that screams "Orlais!" and not "Ferelden!" while i´m playing. Anything that makes the game less of a fereldan point of view, god i hope that the protagonist from DA3 is not another fereldan refugee or with fereldan parents or something.

To be honest, except the beginning, I practically forogt that I could summon him until close the end of the game. It's one of the reasons I want him back as a companion. I felt so detached from this dog.

Honestly, I never really used the dog in either game, so I don't care. If I HAD to state a preference, it would be to repeat the DA2 system and have him summoned, to me it was ridiculous to have him take a full party member slot in DAO.

The only way someone could be bored of a Mabari hound is if they didn't use them as War Hounds.

I love my mabari, but I'd honestly rather have some kind of cat.
They're intelligent, noble, useful in a fight and don't give a rat's ass about your needs. They're perfect! (What, I'm a cat person.)

But as far as the way a pet is implemented goes...I'd rather have the DA:O style back. I completly forgot I could summon the mabari in DA 2. I didn't feel attached to him at all. But in DA:O, it was completly different. He felt like an actual part of the family. The companions talked to him, he barked back...and I can't say how it broke my heart when he whined and looked at me with his big sad eyes at the gates of Denerim. I didn't take him with me and he knew I wasn't coming back. *sniff* My brave little soldier.

I really don't want a cat. Not only are cats useless in battle but they're useless outside of battle as well.

What if our cat was like a mountain lion? Or it is a unique animal that was experimented on and is like a Mabari War Calico? Razor sharp claws of furry-ous death.
