But what do you enjoy doing most? Swinging a melee weapon? Backstabbing from the dark? Using magic, either arcane, divine or druidic? Dwarves amd Half-Orcs make the best fighters. A high dex half-elf is a good swashbuckler, or pure thief. Humans make good Ranger/Clerics. Human, half-elf or elf for Mage. Are you going to bother with a romance? Viconia for half-orc? Nalia for dwarf (requires a mod). Human or half-elf or elf for Jaheira. Are you going to have a full party - avoid a multi-class character. Small party or solo - non-human multi-class will work.

The possibilities are endless, so you have to narroq things down if you want any meaningful advice.

You cannot go wrong with a Paladin (Cavalier is perfect since he has no real drawbacks. Missile weapons are useless to a Paladin, mostly. Or any other kit, if you have EasyTutu or Trilogy installed). They can only be Human also.
Great starting reputation and you will have high Charisma. Great tank, secondary healer, better saves and party face. Plus you can use Carsormyr.

They say that Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric is very, very effective, if not cheesy. Tanking abilities with full Druid and Cleric casting.

Half-Orc/Dwarf Berserker/Barbarian is quite good if you want pure melee damage. Maybe dualling him to a Cleric.

Monk is fun but I would not recommend making one in the first game. I made one and regretted it. Crap damage and AC. Unless you Shadowkeep a katana and put proficiency points there but still. They become amazing in BG2, though.

If you are confident in your knowledge of spells, Sorcerer is great too. But easy to mess up. But no need for scrolls.

And of course the classic Fighter/Mage. Either multi or dual-class Kensai/Berserker with Mage.

I have to agree with cavalier. Immunity to fear, and the ability to cast remove fear practically at will. This becomes incredibly useful(almost mandatory) at high levels.
