Having just completed ME3 on Insanity for the first time I would like to go back and play through the trilogy. It's been so long since I played the first game, I'm a little lost.

Starting with a new character is it wise to invest in charm early on?
What build would you suggest I use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Assault rifle master and fitness for immunity is really all you need. Health regen helps a lot too.

Ya one set of charm is good for conversations obviously, might as well get that out of the way early on.

If you want to pass all conversation checks early, then yes. You will need all 3 charm points to pass all checks on Eden Prime.

I will disagree slightly with Drayce333 about Assault Rifle Master though. Assault Rifles are completely terrible until rank IV (right about when your are level 20 - 25) and Assault Rifle skill tree does not really help much until then. Pistols are just fine in my opinion, even for Soldier. And Master Marksman has more Damage per Second than any Assault Rifle.

Also, if you are unsure of a build, I recommend Simbacca's thread Mass Effect 1: Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds.

i always go for charm to get some of the paragon choices, but for the most part it requires a second playthrough to get other paragon options (mainly near the beginning)

also i must have decryption on the second playthrough to get the salarian codex entry on Virmire. (evaded me for years)

If you don't want to cheat, then yeah invest in Charm or Intimidate early.

Otherwise pistol/marksman is a good skill. Although Overkill and AR's lag a bit, I still end up investing in them.

What bonus power are you planning on taking? Decryption / Sabotage is probably my favorite.

If you're planning on a single play through build and you want to meet all the dialog checks you'll need to put 8 points into charm. That plus the 4 free ones will take care of the issue.

If you're planning on using sniper rifles you'll need at least 7 in assault rifle to unlock the skill. I personally prefer to stop at 9 for AR, because after that you start running into diminishing returns, for your investment. You won't really need overkill mid-late game unless you're doing a weird ar build and running explosive rounds.

I'd put at least 7 points into armor This will unlock heavy armor and give you some extra dr. I generally stop at 8 points for advanced shield boost.

Master Immunity is a wonder to behold,  combine it with high end armor and a couple of medical exo's and you're tougher than a mako.  So 12 points there and 5 or 8 points into assault training.  (5 to unlock fitness/ 8 for advanced adrenaline burst)

4 points in spectre for basic unity.

Unless my math is off that would put you around level 35 or 36 the rest of the points are free to do whatever with.

I'd also say the the best bonus talents are either decryption (with a 9 point investment) or lift with a full 12 point investment.

Just as a side note, you can get some better guns on the citadel well before level 20-25, if you're willing to exploit Dr. Michel. You can get two full sets of spectre vii guns and those ar's aren't terrible.

How does that work?

It involves helping Dr. Michel so you get the discount.
Then you exploit that discount by--I think--selling items to other vendors, then buying them back (at a discount) from Dr Michel. Repeat.
Or maybe it is the other way around.

I will see if I can find a link.

Source.

Complete the side quest for Dr Michel, and her items for sale become cheaper, and she pays you double when you sell things, Thus when you are ready sell all your loot to Dr Michel and buy the most expensive item you can afford from her and sell it right back to her. Take citidel rapid transit to the market (turn off auto-save to make this faster) talk to Expat the merchant (you could use any merchant, he is just the fastest to get to) and go to buyback. All the items you sold to Dr Michel you can buy back for half what you sold them for. Rapid Transit to the Med Clinic & rinse and repeat. Once you can afford the medical exoskeleton (little over 300k) you can make 60k per trip just from that item.

Interesting. Dr Michel and Lorik Quin are clearly the best NPCs then. :)
