Does this absolutely scare the bejeebs out of anyone besides me? :? There are so so many way to screw that up.

*raises hand* Not that I don't think BioWare can handle that properly, but I'd prefer them to let the Warden and the Hawke rest (but then, they're probably planning on using them on a larger plot).

Takes place 3 years after DA2.

They really seemed to make it sound like while we'll be starting somewhere "French" we'll be traveling to a lot of places old and new.

They really emphasized the "may" part. Gaider made it sound as if they do it then it will only be a minor thing but not a tacky "hey look who it is! Ta-da!" thing.

I really hope the Warden and Hawke don't appear.

Personally, I am neither excited or disappointed in any of the information, for I am trying not to expect anything so I can't be disappointed when what I imagine doesn't happen, like in another game I recently played.

This is super awesome news, I can't believe how much extra awesomeness they're packing into DA3! One level is as big as ALL of DA2! And DA2 was mighty big indeed! It definitely sounds like they're going to go more open world, Fallout NV, Skyrim, that type of thing, and let's face it, those were awesome games, but if Bioware were making them they'd have been even more awesome, and that's what we're going to get with DA3. I understand the whole 'protagonist will be human' thing to a degree, since according to what they said, it was something like 90 percent of all players chose to be human in DAO, so I guess their thinking is, why bother adding an option hardly anybody is gonna use. Of course its a bit disappointing, since we see from SWTOR how easy it is to have just a ton of playable races in a game, so adding two more shouldn't have been that big a deal, but I guess if they decided that even a relatively small amount of time is time wasted, and can be better spent elsewhere, then that's what they decided and hopefully it'll work out for the best. I never really cared much about playing as an elf anyway, although I did like playing as a dwarf, and I too hope that we actually get female dwarves back in DA3, I dont know why they ever left.

Ultimately its all about the story, and the romances, so long as that is done well, the rest is gravy. The initial screen shots are so beautiful, it looks like the quality of the graphics might finally begin to rival that of the rest of the game. I always liked DAO's graphics, but obviously they were outdated. DA2's were better in some ways, worse in others, but either way plenty of room for improvement. That improvement appears to have arrived.

These types of games, the more open world games, one of the very best things about them is when the side quests make you forget about the main quest, or simply not care about it, because there's so much other awesomeness going on. Like in Skyrim, I literally didn't care about the main quest, the side quests were so much fun I really spent the vast majority of my time playing those. Fallout NV was a bit more well balanced in that regard, but again a tremendous amount of time on the side quests. Obviously DAO and DA2 gave us tons and tons of awesome sidequests as well, but it would seem that we could be in for more than ever before with DA3, and if so I'm going to love every minute of that. I can't wait to explore the world in a whole new way, a better way than ever before, a way that is super fun and super cool and super exciting. Honestly there was always a little bit of an 'open world' feeling anytime I was in the Deep Roads, perhaps thats why they were my favorite places to explore in both games. I hope we get to do more of that in DA3 as well. The Skyrim NPCs were a tad on the lifeless side, and while the Fallout NV NPCs had more personality, there was little to no romance. These are about the only weaknesses you can find in those types of awesome games, and there's no way that those weaknesses will be present in DA3, we all know those are Bioware's greatest strengths. I anticipate DA3 being even better than those other games, after reading all this news I'm more confident than ever that DA3 will indeed be the greatest game of all time, and I can't wait to find out even more about it!

Assumed, that they don't refer to what remains if you subtract all the recycled environments.

This thread has much more exciting info on EE than I've seen elsewhere. I'm really looking forward to getting a greater diversity of locations than we've seen in previous games, and traversing across a broad sweep of Thedas, as well as the apparent commitment to the admittedly problematic issue of incorporating save game import choices. I'm also very much looking forward to seeing the Warden again. I'm glad Flemeth is making a return, hopefully that means some kind of resolution to the OGB storyline.

In light of all this, the whole human PC deal is really a non-issue for me now - especially with the background stories adding another layer of interest. Plus, David Gaider appeared to hint on the "So we are Human again" thread that these backgrounds will have a more substantial effect on gameplay than those featured in the ME series.

Especially with mods....

How will this modded beauty look like in DAIII, I wonder?

If you have modded your game you really can't expect them to be able to pull an import off to your liking. I have a bunch of modded Wardens, but will be reasonable and understand that my modded versions will probably be bald and FUBAR. Perhaps I can change appearance to something ok-ish and vanilla before import.

Even if our characters aren't modded, can they pull headmorph info from the first two games into the Frostbite 2 engine? I'd rather not see the Warden and Hawke if they're generic "default" versions. I guess they can put them in full armor and a helmet, but that would be kind of odd for mage characters...

lols were had. Many of them.....

Yeah, woe behold any elf that shows up with an imported face. And if I import my black Hawke and they spoit back out the default white one. I will return the game. But I'm sure they will puit on a helmet, or hood. right? RIGHT?!

I don't see the problem in maintaining information from "saved games". All they have to do is write a variables translation. WARDEN_DOES_THIS_ABBA = HERO_DAO_DOES_THIS_ABBA. It shouldn't be a gosh darn problem at all. It sounds like Bioware's dragging their heels. It should be among the simpler coding jobs.

Hey, Bioware, didn't I tell you a long time ago that it's a really simple coding job to make a program to recognize saved game information and translate it anew? I used to do that in Apple BASIC when I was a kid, making arena fighting games for myself. And I'm not a hot ace at coding, never have been.

Of course they might be having problems translating graphical appearance, but that shouldn't be too difficult either.  Just translate the basic models then convert features into a rough approximation.  If that's too hard, then just put them both in masks or helmets with only six variants for the Warden and two variants for Hawke.  I know it might feel sad, but hey, they might make a brief appearance. And that appearance might be to kill the Inquisitor.

Well at least my expectation extremely low now. No way I'll end up disappointed one way or another.

I believe the main issue is actually do with with incorrect variables and import errors from DAO->DA2 in the save games, and not necessarily just about the ability to import the information out of a DA2 save. A lot of people were upset that certain choices from DAO imported into DA2 wrong. By removing the erroneous save games from the equation, and just allowing people to manually select their correct, relevant variables (and possibly, also re-create their Warden and Hawke appearances with this same tool), then this issue won't come up again.
