Why wouldn't it? Without the patch bow is weak, but not completely useless just stack cunning, bard skills also help. There is no set cut/dry way to do it, you could solo the game on your mage if you really wanted to.

Tell her to use arrow of slaying / scatttershot and that's pretty much all she is good for.

She's also ok for kiting elder dragons. Of all the companions i've used I have to say she's the weakest of them all even when I respecced her to be full bow. (20 str, 30 cunning for locks, rest into dex with maybe 2 into willpower for some extra stamina. She also has her companion quest bow ) Problem is game doesn't allow kiting of 2-handers, she drops faster then wynne, and she doesn't even do good damage outside of  the 2-3 skills she uses. This is when compared to my pc being a dual-wield warrior she gets higher single damage records but my pc can kill most enemies faster by himself then the other 3 combined.

I also have my game patched.

You could always get the Better Archery (now Combat) mod, or the Combat Tweak mod.

Although not sure if the Better Archery/Combat mod is making an appearance again anytime soon because of a small scandal between the creators of the two mods or so I've heard.

Edit:
Never mind, I forget that the older versions supporting older patches are gone now.  And that it's PC.  Sorry about that.
