This was the second biggest disappointment I had with Dragon Age II. I cannot express my disappointment profoundly enough. I am a huge follower of Bioware and passionate fan. A recent article posted on Kotaku alerted me to the fact that players will once again be playing a Human character. While this go around we will be able to choose a no playable background for our character a la Mass Effect, I still lament the death of race choice for the players. I understand resources must be allocated, but for the same reasons Project Eternity just blew up Kickstarter with a $4 million nuke, players obviously crave this feature in their RPGs. Finally got around to cleaning this post up, still can't link though.

Link where?

You can copy/paste the link address, you don't have to actually have a hyperlink.

Edit: Thanks, Maria.

Link to article.

Character customization will return "in a big way" for Dragon Age III according to a BioWare panel spilling details and concept art on next year's game at the at the Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo today.

Already known as Dragon Age III: Inquisition and slated for a "late fall 2013" release, BioWare said it would release concept art being shown at the expo later today. Cinematic designer Jon Perry said that "one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of the levels in Dragon Age 2."

Creative director Mike Laidlaw said that "customization is going to be bigger than Dragon Age Origins," to include "follower customization," according to producer Cameron Lee's live-tweeting of the event.

Asked how much control players would have over their character, lead writer David Gaider said "You will be human," before adding that "backgrounds will be in Dragon Age 3 even though you will be human, it's not playable but it does significant impact on the story." That again was according to Lee's twitter feed.

Other details trickling out suggest that you'll be able to take control of your own castle, and that the game will import prior character choices but, said executive producer Mark Darrah, "we're investigating some ways without save imports."

Always found it funny getting it on with Morrigan as a Dwarf.  Made it seem like she had a midget fetish.

It is a huge personal disappointment for me, too. But I understand they can't please everyone. I know BW are doing the best they can to create the best game for all of us, and I'm sure they have a reason for forcing us to play as humans :( I don't think it's a decision that would be made lightly.

I am ok with since they are at least giving us background options that will have significant impact on the story.

I see nothing wrong with playing a human again.  As long as we can make that human our own.

I can't say I'm disappointed, as I was not creating false expectations for myself. can't say i mind overmuch, really.

But, castle? Interesting. Non-playable backstory? Could be good, could be bad...

I can't say I expected any different. I'm certainly not happy about it, though.

However, those castles do sound interesting.

I'd prefer to play as humans, so it wasn't that much of a disappointment to me, personally.

Yeh I agree with Lathrim.

Dissapointed, but I didn't expect anything else.

Shame cos I prefer to play as Elves when I can. Though given how they redesigned the Elves to look um, lets say odd, then I probably would steer clear of them any way.

It's unfortunate that we will be stuck as a Human again. I would have loved to be a Dalish Elf agian but oh well. At least we will have a choice of our background. Although he says in the article that customization will be bigger than DA:O. So I'm wondering what we will be able to change if not our race.

Can't say I'm dissapointed. I've already planned to play as a human mage, so whatever they did decide, it wouldn't matter to me. Well, it also means I can't play as an elf in my second playthrough, but that was optional.

Background variation is more important than race vairation, IMO. Plus, I can understand why they didn't add differing races for the PC. Just not worth the time or the money to implement a feature that a small minority of the players will actually use. This was proven in DA:O.

So yeah, I'm with Bioware on this one.

Edit: Also:

It's a slight disappointment, Orzammar was simply awesome as a dwarf and the city elves were my default, but hopefully there will be other things to delight and enjoy.

I really hope one of those background options is "mysterious stranger".

Letting me choose among three options (as ME did) is better than forcing me to have one in particular (like DA2 did), but not nearly as good as letting me define it entirely myself.

And yes, I realise it would then have no impact on "the story" as it is defined by BioWare.  Since I don't accept their definition, I obviously don't care about any such impact.

This. If I can't play as an elf or a dwarf, at least give me the option to create a slim guy, or a curvy girl.
