...I think Mike said at the panel to not take this as an indication of where DA is headed in the future-- he said we intend to go return to "all four races as playable" in the future (his words).

Well, at least there's that I guess. Still, another in a string of hope crushing announcements for features of DA3.

Voiced protagonist? DA2 wins. Wheel with paraphrases or full text? DA2 wins. Racail choice for PC? DA2 wins.

For someone who prefered DA:O's gameplay and feature set, I'm running out of places to look forward to changes for DA3. If the next few announcements are there's now a fixed third person camera and even faster hack and slash combat, I give up.

Agreed strongly. And, of course, by "in the future" what he probably means is: "Whenever we feel like writing a game that other races could conceivably be involved in story-wise, never mind whether we actually want to put in the time or resources to make it happen."

Considering the strict Andrastian Human direction the over-all story has been going from DA2 to DA3, I'm willing to bet money that DA4 is going to roll around and they'll still be on an Andrastian human kick and the answer is going to be that races "aren't an option fit for our plans" or whatever.

Then we'll have to wait another few years after DA4's release for news on DA5 and by then fans of fantasy role-playing games that actually let us role-play fantasy races will have long jumped ship and they'll decide not to include the option because there's "not enough of a demand for it" anymore, etc. etc.

And the whole: "We're going to include the best of DA:O and DA2" is ringing hollower and hollower every time they decide to reveal yet another gaming mechanic that constituted DA2 but not DA:O. Human-only protagonist is just another tell-tale beat of the heart.

We've gone from "let's decide how the game is going to end in the middle of the first quarter" to "let's decide the direction of the entire franchise for years to come based on 10 minutes of gameplay" in the football analogy. It's fantastic.

I'm really, really disappointed with this. Playable races and playable origins were the only two things I really, really wanted in this game. They could have just made this game DA2 v2 and as long as it had those two things I would have been happy. They could have gone away with a voiced protagonist and gone back to DA:O style combat (which I'm not a fan of) and as long as they had races and origins I'd have been happy. Heck, they could have cut out origin stories and just included playable races and I'd still have been happy.

My hype for this game has suddenly plumeted to near zero.

Yeah, I don't think we've seen anything designed specifically for people who liked DA:O but hated DA II.

Believe it or not DA II was based off of DA:O. They have a lot of differences admittedly but similarities too. It's not like DAIII is being designed as a DAII clone. I doubt either DA:O or DAII will be ignored in the development of DAIII. Nobody wants a copy paste of either of those games we want somthing new.

Cinematic design, no race customization... yay for the people who like that, but I just don't feel any enthusiasm for Bioware anymore.

edit: what dheer said.  The only bone they've thrown so far to the people who disliked DA2 but liked DAO (that I know of) is their decision not to recycle levels.

Looks like I'll be sticking with Skyrim and whatever new DLC they release. At least with that game I can actually choose from multiple races in a fantasy game.

"Dragonborn" is the next DLC coming up, according to rumors. I thought Skyrim had a good story, and I liked Paarthurnax's philosophical outlook on the possibility of a new world arising from the end of the current one.

Also, Project Eternity is supposed to have multiple races as well for the protagonist. Lot of talented people working on that game.

So I can't play as a Fex?! What the hell Bioware! =P

Still... if this isn't just some misleading type of thing you guys are saying -- my mind always suspects people when they say what they'd like to do -- it gives me some hope, as it falls into line with what I've been arguing many months ago.

That the DA series would shift from set protagonists to playable races, when the story demanded it.

Though I'm not quite sure why DA3 could have playable races, as I think that would really work well in its favor from more then just a "more choice of races" standpoint.

Ya because likeing DA2 means one had toi like the reused enviroments... Oh wait no they don't.

That was the point,  It was no bone specific to such fans; it was just one that met complaints they shared with large numbers of other players.

*sigh*  why do I bother.

As others have said here and before, being an Inquisitor almost automatically precluded us from having multiple races. Even if the Chanty/Templars don't control the Inquisiton, they will at least have to sign off on those who are leading it, given that the inqusiiton is being out together to determine who has sabotaged the peace conference between the two groups.

And the Chantry/Templars wouldn't sign off on some godless Dwarves, pagan knife ears or heathen Kossith being in charge.

I was at the panel. They didn't rule out race options in later games but said that for this one it was important again to be a human.

Speak for yourself. I would have been totally pumped for a DA:O clone with a new story.

And I agree with Maria, the DA:O fans haven't really been shown anything other than follower customization, which we have only been given the most brief of descriptions/demonstrations. Not to mention equipping your companions has been a mainstay of RPGs for decades. It's almost like getting excited for conversation options in an RPG... not exactly ground breaking, or even specific to DA:O... more just along the lines of specific to RPGs in general.

Well I could bring up Skyrim's Stormcloaks but I'd just be laughed at.

Heinous idiocy, but they can only do this so many times before screwing the game over completely, and I doubt they will. I'll accept it, but I'll be loading up my forum crossbow.

Recruiting othe races to fight a war is one thing. Recruiting other races to fish the answers to a conspiracy where other races might even be suspects is not likely.

If, however, we're forced to be Andrastian again, this will be even more heinous idiocy, and I'm not sure what my response will be.

Yes, I heard about that. Dawnguard was great, but I wanted to go to a different land. Dragonborn sounds like my kind of DLC.

I have faith in Project Eternity. It's too bad I can't say the same for Bioware. Obsidian knows how to make RPG's and New Vegas is one of the best RPG's I've played this generation. Where Bioware fails (always trying to find ways and make excuses to cut the RPG out of the game) Obsidian will hopefully succeed.

I like Dragon Age, so this is unlikely as of now.
Unlikely. Not impossible. Which is something I didn't think I'd be saying, but here, I will.

Didn't expect otherwise. Pretty disappointed that we can't play through our character's origin, however. But multiple background choices is definitely a step up from DA2.

I'm not sure why you quoted me as this doesn't seem to be a reply to my post.

What do you see in Dragon Age III geared specifically to those who liked DA:O but not DA II?

I think it seems to be a waste of time if there aren't racial options, unless the origins are really good.

Just from the title of the DA3, I'm not entirely sure why playing as a race other than human would make sense within the storyline of a game called "Inquisition." Except for Brother Burkel we haven't seen a dwarven Andrastian and we know there aren't dwarven mages. The Dalish followed Andraste but only because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Maybe an Elven Mage would make sense, but without knowing what the story is and who your character will actually be, I don't see any race other than human having a vested interest in the outcome of a mage/templar conflict.

Eh I'd have bought Dawnguard already if I didn't keep hearing about it seriously ****ing people's games up still wanting for them to deal wth the worst bugs in it before I spend money on it only to have my game freeze every 20  seconds.

The City Elves are Andrastian. They are required by law to be.

I don't care if we only play humans. It would have been nice to have options, but I didn't truly expect it. Also, I'm excited to see what sort of customization options will be available.
