I suspect you have a better chance of getting a mysterious stranger option than in Origins as the origins were to introduce the player to the world, something the new ones won't need to do.

They could have included a mysterious stranger origin as NG+ in DAO.  That would prevent anyone from choosing it initially and then being confused by the lack of exposition.

I know they think they need to protect the player from himself (which players should find terribly insulting, frankly), but in this case they could have still done that while also including the mysterious stranger option.

I hear WoW offers a lot of races that people can choose from if race choice is a big deal. Me, I prefer a good fitting story, would of been immensely disappointed if a "heathen" race worked for the Chantry..

Bioware knows the price of standing against the Wishes of the Imperium of Man. And soon the rest of you heathen Filth will as well.

I'm ok with this compromise if they give the promised amount of customization they're talking about and your backgrounds playing a big part of your story...

All I can say is that I'm disappointed, but I'll get over it quickly.

Meh i'm not surprised, but i hope we get a more indepth cc than DAO's or DA2's skimpy cc.

This. If I can't play as an elf or a dwarf, at least give me the option to create a slim guy, or a curvy girl.

If Bio can make a cc like SR3/Dragon's Dogma minus the height, and weight sliders then everything else is just gravy.

I'm rather fine with this, actually. Mostly because I saw it coming, so I wasn't holding my breath for the alternative.

Good for me, as I only ever played human so I'm just stoked for more news on it. Can't wait for DA3.

This.

I don't even care how pre-defined our character is going to be. If I can roleplay polar opposites and a little bit of everything in between, I'll be happy.

The reality is the overwhelming number of players just rolled Human when they had the option back in Origins. It was something like 70-80% if my memory serves me. Just in terms of stuff like the camera but more specifically voice work and the like it must seem like a lot of wasted resources from BW's point of view.

It's a bit disappointing and i would obviously prefer having the option to be elf or dwarf rather than being forced to be human. It's not killing the chance that i will buy the game but it do hurt it a little bit

This is a good thing, race options would only work with the story of DA:O, think people goddamnit.

Yeah, really. Because according to player data based on DAO (The bestest, awesomest blabla) , dwarves and elves were played by like 6-10% while 85-90% played CousCous and Amell.

What did you expect?

Anyway, background options? One DAIII level as big as ALL of DAII?

Sounds good so far. :o:O:O

I'm holding off judgement on DA3 for now, But i will say what little i know of it, it seems like a step in the right direction. I just hope since we a are stuck playing a human again He/she won't be stuck with that horrible "mock fremch" accent.

When I first heard we were human again I sighed but I kinda knew it would happen anyway so, although I love me- my elves I'm cool with it... Nothing will stop me buying this game.

I'd say the only negative I've heard about DA3 so far is the race selection. Everything else they've hinted at has some real potential...

And the castle bits, that could be really awesome if we can customize and turn it into our own personal hub...

More customization than DAO/DA2? That's a huge positive for me personally. And we haven't even seen how the new dialogue wheel will look, the new level design, or the combat...

It's all uphill at this point.

I really hope one of those background options is "mysterious stranger".

Letting me choose among three options (as ME did) is better than forcing me to have one in particular (like DA2 did), but not nearly as good as letting me define it entirely myself.

And yes, I realise it would then have no impact on "the story" as it is defined by BioWare.  Since I don't accept their definition, I obviously don't care about any such impact.

I don't mind that myself. What worries me is that fact that we cannot play them. This means that certain things will be set in stone for our protagonist, which means that our protagonist's character in these areas will be somewhat defined.

Like I've said before with DA:O and KotOR. DA:O had backstories (the origins) but you were given control over them which allowed you to use them to shape your character. KotOR had a set-in-stone backstory that assumed a path, and thus assumed some of the "character" of your character.

The more they pre-determine the pC, though, the more they're likely to assume some specific interpretation of those pre-defined events.

They they tell me my character joined the army in one thing.  That they tell me why my character joined the army is quite another.

Can't say I'm surprised. Racial choices will likely never be on the table with a voiced PC, just from cost alone. Even if they use the same VO for all races, having six different dialogue lines depending on Origin (even as scantly as DA:O did it) is extremely expensive.

I hope the backgrounds are more than ME1's three, and more impactful than just one side quest or two side quests. But I'm not holding my breath.

I completely disagree on KotOR.  Since the personality of the characeter in the backstory had been destroyed, there was no necessary relationship between the actions in that backstory and the character of the PC during the game.

KotOR and NWN offered the most wide-open character personality design of any BioWare game.

Well, it was said to be pretty significant on the story. It seems Bioware wants the world to react to you more in DA3. They've hinted specializations might even be more personal and the world actually react to that.

But if it's like Mass Effect, I say don't even bother...ME had only a few lines per game that referenced your background. It was almost pointless...

It's not really surprising. I'm pleased about the backgrounds though and am looking forward to investigating them.

For some reason I'm not as enthused about the castle thing. I guess because I'm expecting it to be the same as it was in Awakening and DA2, which was dissapointing, but I will reserve judgement until more info and/or the game is released.

Bummed about being stuck as human only but not entirely surprised.

At least they compromised with adding backgrounds instead though as far as having "impact" on the story, I'm a bit skeptical.

No playable races?
very well. I'll save my money for better games.

a pity. really. because I loved very much Dragon Age: Origins.

I was really going to think there was hope.

very well. there is no point to stay here anymore.
