I can't say I expected any different. I'm certainly not happy about it, though.
However, those castles do sound interesting.

I know right?  If the player killed Anders in Dragon Age 2, he'll return as a companion in Dragon Age III, explaining that he was only mostly dead, and that's where castle customization comes in.  For every upgrade you add to the castle, you'll gain castle asset points, and if you don't have enough castle asset points by the games end sequence, Anders will die in the siege upon the castle.  Again.

This just in:  KOTOR retroactively not an RPG because aekforever says so.

Can I vote with incoherent, passive-aggressive forum rants instead?

Now the next thing we will be waiting to hear is if our PC will have and be restricted to just a Orlesain accent.

I'd be totally okay with that.

Same, french accent is pretty.

Voice acting is definitely one of Bioware's strong suits, I don't have any concerns there. Even the weaker VAs are still... pretty good. And the good ones are... really good.

Cause clearly the defining aspect that makes a game a RPG is racial choice.

Someone get onto Square Enix, they are doing it wrong.

What specific lesson were we supposed to have learned?

That people want multiple races for protagonist? That's something we're well aware of.

The lesson of 'people want more choices in games!' is certainly a good lesson - on the flip side, of course, the lesson of 'resources are not unlimited and we can't please everyone without going completely over budget both in terms of money and time' is a valuable lesson to learn as well.

I'm not diminishing that, to some people, being able to play as a race other than human is a Big Deal. However, it wasn't an option that we felt fit our plans for DA3. Obviously, some people are going to be disappointed - that's unfortunate, but it's inevitable. If it means you aren't going to buy the game, that's certainly your prerogative and right as a consumer, and I encourage folks to vote with their wallet.

I can't really say it more clearly than that. It's unfortunate you're disappointed, but let's not label it as anything other than it is - a conscious decision where we felt the benefits of multiple races were outweighed by the drawbacks and costs (not only financial and time-wise, but in terms of quality bar for other parts of the game).

Well, I'm glad you're aware that people want multiple races for protagonist. It's a shame that you've not learnt enough to actually implement them though. Guess you're happy with DA2 level sales again!

And everytime you talk about limited resources, I have to think... you managed to put multiple races into a game when Bioware was independent, as well as multiple origins. Now, when you're owned by one of the biggest game companies in the world, suddenly your resources are far more limited? That doesn't add up to me.

I admit I had hoped that they would keep race options even if they didn't do origins

Link to article.

Character customization will return "in a big way" for Dragon Age III according to a BioWare panel spilling details and concept art on next year's game at the at the Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo today.

Already known as Dragon Age III: Inquisition and slated for a "late fall 2013" release, BioWare said it would release concept art being shown at the expo later today. Cinematic designer Jon Perry said that "one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of the levels in Dragon Age 2."

Creative director Mike Laidlaw said that "customization is going to be bigger than Dragon Age Origins," to include "follower customization," according to producer Cameron Lee's live-tweeting of the event.

Asked how much control players would have over their character, lead writer David Gaider said "You will be human," before adding that "backgrounds will be in Dragon Age 3 even though you will be human, it's not playable but it does significant impact on the story." That again was according to Lee's twitter feed.

Other details trickling out suggest that you'll be able to take control of your own castle, and that the game will import prior character choices but, said executive producer Mark Darrah, "we're investigating some ways without save imports."

The Deep Roads were larger than all the "levels" in DA2 combined. Follower customization isn't new and I always expected it to be improved. Why didn't you do this for DA2? Don't answer that. "You will be human" ---- ****ing bull****.

It already sounds worse than Origins. This is gonna be like before DA2 came out where every piece of new information was greeted with a resounding *ugh*. Image IPB

That isn't true at all. I enjoy BW games, but they go way out of their way it seems to cater to minorities.

Obviously the only conclusion to draw from this is that Star Trek Online is the greatest RPG of all time.

Why?

You can invent your own custom race/species!  UNLIMITED RACIAL OPTIONS

Given that DAII made more of a profit than DAO did....and that it wasn't a flop........

Never mind that, one has NOTHING to do with the other.

Speaking of lessons that need learning, how about learning what "resources" means in a game development context like the one John Epler used.

I agree with VA being one of BWs strong points.

But.. Orlesians.. I like the French accent, but only one in DA has not caused my brain cells to slowly die off. But turn again.. All those Orlesians were obnoxious so I guess the VA fitted the persona Image IPB

Is "you haven't learnt enough" the new "you're not implementing the things I want"?

Oh goody, we get to play another human in another game that includes fantasy races but we can't actually play as those fantasy races. You can look at them and you can sleep with them, but you can't actually play them. They serve as pretty little decorations to give it the fantasy look, but not the fantasy feel.

It's also really nice that BioWare will go to all the trouble to make dozens of different types of armor that each change shape for every character that wears them, but race selection? Too much time and effort for something so frivolous. Because really, let's be honest, nothing says profound character customization quite like hair and outfits. Racial backgrounds and how they affect your character culturally, socially, emotionally and psychologically? How they change who you are, how others see you, how you see others and how the world sees your socio/economic/cultural background through your decisions through your adventures? Being able to experience different racial and cultural backgrounds that you couldn't experience as the "default" (since every Companion and NPC will ultimately see you as a human and treat you as a human and vice-versa)? Purely superficial and unneeded. Let's go back to making more outfits and landscapes.

I'm going back to Kickstarter.

Sales figures don't really prove or disprove the popularity of a single feature.  I bought Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Oblivion, Skyrim, Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Alpha Protocol.

Does that mean that I prefer silent protagonists to voiced ones, because I bought 3 more of those games?  Not at all.  There's too many other features to consider.  People buy or don't buy entire games.  Signal to noise ratio renders sales useless in saying "oh that means racial choice is inherently more popular."  It doesn't necessarily.
